Cargill
Proper and economical nutrition is one of the most important component of a successful sheep operation. Important nutrients in sheep rations are: Water; Energy; Protein; Minerals and Vitamins. The levels at which each nutrient are required by sheep depend on whether the animals are being fed for maintenance, maintenance plus production or maintenance plus productions plus reproduction. If any nutrient is present in an inadequate amount - it will limit the performance of the sheep. CLS liquid supplement is an excellent source of inexpensive protein which is fortified with vitamins and minerals. Sheep, like cattle, are ruminants so their protein source can be made up from organic or synthetic protein. CLS can be fed to adult sheep, but we recommend that it not be fed to lambs under 23 kg (50 lbs). Lambs do not have a developed rumen until approximately 4 weeks of age. Adult sheep should receive 30 - 50 grams/head/day. We recommend that you do not use any other grain ration, supplement or premix containing supplemental copper when feeding CLS to sheep. Copper is an essential nutrient but in excess can poison domesticated animals. CLS has researched the proper rationing of copper for sheep.
Vitamins that are necessary for healthy Sheep:
The vitamins A,D,E, and K are fat soluble. They can be stored in the liver and body fat during periods of abundant supply and rationed out from these organs when supplies become scant.

Livestock
[Home] The Museum keeps several types of farm livestock, which can be seen in various parts of the site. They are managed in a traditional way, and the main breeds are maintained in small numbers sufficient to be viable for breeding. Horses Cattle Sheep Pigs ... Birds and Insects
Horses
The Museum keeps draught horses. They are, either pure bred Shire horses or crossed with another breed. They represent as nearly as possible the traditional size of cart horse that would have been found on farms from the middle of the 19th century until the mid 1950s. They were used for all kinds of farm work and for heavier local transport. Many of the draught horses seen today have been bred for show purposes, and the trend has been towards larger and larger animals. Click here for a series of pictures showing the museum's horses working in the traditional way on harvesting, haymaking, mowing and ploughing. [Top of page]
Cattle
The museum has acquired a pair of new-born Sussex calves that will be trained by Chris Baldwin, who operates at the Woodland Craft Centre at the Museum. They will learn to work under the yoke, and if successful a further pair may be added later . The oxen will demonstrate ploughing as well as carting and general duties, so that visitors will be able to compare horses and oxen.

There are a number of different theories regarding the origins of domestic sheep. However, most sources agree that they originated from mouflon. There are two wild populations of mouflons still in existence: the Asiatic mouflon which is still found in the mountains of Asia Minor and southern Iran and the European mouflon of which the only existing members are on the islands of Sardinia and Corsica. These two species are closely related with the only difference being the redder coloration and different horn configuration of the Asiatic mouflon. Some sources even hypothesize that the European mouflon actually developed from the first domestic sheep in European being allowed to become feral and that all sheep are actually descendants of the Asiatic mouflon. Sheep were among the first animals domesticated. An archeological site in Iran produced a statuette of a wooled sheep which suggests that selection for woolly sheep had begun to occur over 6000 years ago. The common features of today's sheep were already appearing in Mesopotamian and Babylonian art and books by 3000 B.C.

Why Test Feeds?
Nutrient concentration can vary considerably in feeds, especially forages. Protein in alfalfa hay can range from 10 to 25 percent or more of the dry matter; grass hay will contain between four and 18 percent protein. Use feed tests to target specific feeds to different livestock. Feed high quality forage to the most productive livestock or when nutrient needs are highest. Feed lower quality forage to animals with lower nutrient needs. Feed tests can help establish the dollar value of a forage, in the cash market or in personal use inventories. Use these tests to establish the value of your forage and to help determine what forages to feed, buy, or sell. Forage tests are useful to evaluate production practices like fertilization, time of harvest, method of harvest, etc., that may influence forage quality. Management skills can improve by learning how changes in production practices affect the quality of your forages.

W elcome to the Breeds of Livestock resource presented by the Department of Animal Science at Oklahoma State University. This site is intended as an educational and informational resource on breeds of livestock throughout the world. We hope you enjoy the information provided and find it both educational and fun. We see this site as a continually growing resource. As time passes we will be expanding the educational and scientific information pertaining to breeds. We already have breeds from every inhabited continent and we have cooperative projects underway with individuals at a number of other Universities to add to our listings and to expand existing information. We would welcome additional cooperative efforts so please let us know. What is a breed? The classic definition of a "breed" is usually stated as a variation of this statement. Animals that, through selection and breeding, have come to resemble one another and pass those traits uniformly to their offspring. Unfortunately this definition leaves some unanswered questions. For example, when is a crossbred animal considered a composite breed and when do we stop thinking about them as composites? Perhaps this definition from

version 3 ADAMATIC - the revolutionary automatic ear tagging system - has been shipped all around the UK since January 2003. In fact several have been exported for trials and approval.
2 seasons of field use by pioneering farming partners have led to the arrival of the repeatable repeater
All the progress which we have made (from heavy metal handles which were individually machined from raw castings to the current re-enforced plastic finished mouldings) has been made by listening to feedback - positive and negative - and incorporating all the bells and whistles which we have added gradually, to our 'finished version' v 3.
For the vast majority of the 100 v1 and 500 v2 users we have been able to upgrade them as they encountered unpredicted field performance difficulties.
Our no quibble replacement policy has been welcomed and we have benefitted hugely by receiving used Adamatics back for inspection.
