Introduction to How Sewing Machines Work

Sew What?

Lock and Chain
... Shop or Compare Prices The General Assembly The conventional electric sewing machine is a fascinating piece of engineering. If you were to take the outer casing off, you would see a mass of gears , cams, cranks and belts, all driven by a single electric motor . The exact configuration of these elements varies a good deal from machine to machine, but they all work on a similar idea. The diagram below shows a fairly standard lock-stitch design. In this diagram, the electric motor is connected to a drive wheel by way of a drive belt. The drive wheel rotates the long upper drive shaft , which is connected to several different mechanical elements. The end of the shaft turns a crank , which pulls the needle bar up and down. The crank also moves the thread-tightening arm. Moving in synch with the needle bar, the tightening arm lowers to create enough slack for a loop to form underneath the fabric, then pulls up to tighten the loop after it is released from the shuttle hook.

Hello, you are visitor number
Welcome to the Online Antique Sewing Machine Resource Page
If you have a Singer sewing machine that you would like to find more info on, call Singer toll-free at . If you provide them with the machine's serial number (which is usually stamped on the right side of the machine bed and often begins with one or two letters) they can provide you with the machine's model number and it's date of manufacture. Singer also has copies of manuals available for $10 each (unfortunately, they are no longer free.) If you have a White sewing machine, call the White toll-free number at . If you provide them with a serial number (for White Rotary machines, the serial number begins with an 'FR' and is stamped on the back right hand side of the machine bed), they should be able to provide you with an approximate date of manufacture. If you have a non-Singer sewing machine that you have had a hard time identifying or finding information on, feel free to mail a photo (or photos) of it to me, and either myself or one of the page's visitors should be able to figure out what you have. With permission, the photo(s) will be added to the page with the proper credits. LIESEL'S PRACTICAL POUFBUNNY AREA on Petticoat Pond 7. PRACTICE AND GENERAL STUFF If all has gone well your machine is set up and sewing! Now take some larger scraps, layer them together, and draw some lines on the top piece. Draw some straight lines, a circle, some curves, and "S" curves. Sew along each line trying to keep the stitching on the line. Keep doing this until you feel confident in your ability to control the material flow. Again, it’s better to sew slow and get what you want than to go fast and end up with trash. Do this exercise with different types of material to like nylon chiffon, nylon tricot, and cotton broadcloth. If you feel like an adventure try some corduroy. General Stuff: Good Sewing!
