University Honors Program School of Community Service Leading through responsiveness The School of Community Service believes in the value of applying theoretical understanding of human behavior to communities in real-world settings. In addition to the quality education it offers, the school is home to innovative research by faculty and students in the areas of social service delivery, city management, health care, substance abuse, cross-cultural communication, emergency preparedness and economic development. The school was one of the first community-focused academic programs in the nation, and it continues to be one of the most innovative. Following are some examples drawn from the school:
  • The city management and urban policy field in the master of public administration degree program was ranked 11th in the nation by U.S. News and World Report — higher than any other community-focused program in the state of Texas.

Youth and Seniors:
Science Discovery Workshops An intergenerational program that trains local volunteers to involve students in science investigations in biology, health, and physical science.
2000-2001 marks the seventeenth year that the Lawrence Hall of Science has been awarded a California State Department of Education grant to implement the highly successful intergenerational program: Youth and Seniors: Science Discovery Workshops. This project is funded by the State to provide unique educational experiences for students and retired adults.
Over the years, many funding groups, school groups, and intergenerational programs have provided additional support for the Youth and Seniors program to allow more schools to participate. In Berkeley, Youth and Seniors works closely with the Senior Scholars Program at Malcolm X School. Senior Scholars is an intergenerational program which provides art, language and science enrichment workshops for students taught by volunteers. In Oakland, Youth and Seniors worked with the UC Botanical Gardens at Martin Luther King Middle School and the LHS Family Health group at Lazear Elementary.
Youth and Seniors relies on its talented pool of volunteers to provide the enthusiasm and expertise to make each workshop a special experience for students and adults alike. This year, we are making a particular effort to recruit grandparents and other community volunteers of varied backgrounds and cultures to emphasize the intergenerational spirit of the project. Volunteer training sessions are held during the school year at the Lawrence Hall of Science.

What is Medicaid?
Medicaid is a state and federal funded health insurance program that serves low income individuals of all ages. Though funded by both the federal and state money, Medicaid is administered by the state, and therefore, each state's Medicaid program has different eligibility rules and benefits. Who is eligible for Medicaid?
Where to enroll for Medicaid?

Normally, a person has to apply for Medicaid in person. If the person is unable to apply in person, his/her representative must do so. The County Department of Social Services is where a person has to enroll for Medicaid. Since the eligibility requirements and benefits differ from state to state, it is advisable to call the department and ask for a list of items
needed to determine eligibility, as well as ask for an application and/or appointment.

Virtually every contributor drew a contrast between how older people were treated in 1973 and a hoped for change by 2000. James Birren, who was the dean when the time capsule was buried, read the words of singer and actor Belafonte:
The time capsule also contained copies of the Feb. 12, 1973, Los Angeles Times and New York Times and the Feb. 13 USC Daily Trojan Fiddler on the Roof, Deliverance and Last Tango in Paris were playing at movie theaters.
IT WAS VERY Los Angeles and New York Times was male, the mastheads of both papers listed only men, and all but one of the op-ed articles were by men. And, men wrote all 25 letters in the time capsule.
Now in his ninth decade and still practicing medicine, conducting research and writing, DeBakey has become a living example that some of the hopes from 27 years ago have come true.
