THE ELDERLY
The Senior Citizens of Our Ummah
My uncle, my mother's eldest brother, died early this week in Pakistan. He was about 80. Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun. To Allah we belong and to Him we return.
The same can be said, for the most part, for senior citizens in most Muslim countries. There is a social structure, an extended family, in which an individual can spend the rest of his or her life surrounded by doting children and grandchildren, as well as peers they may have grown up with their whole lives. This is not the case for many Muslim seniors in North America. The United Nations has designated 1999 the International Year of the Older Person. While some may dismiss this as token acknowledgement of senior citizens worldwide, it's still a good time for Muslims to remember our seniors in North America, and the challenges they face, which have largely been ignored. The General Picture Overall, Muslim communities do treat their elderly better than how mainstream North American society does.

letter from the editor To All Of Our Readers: Welcome one and all to the month of April and all that it brings, including its start of April Fool’s Day! May your pranks be kind and your foolishness be gentle!  May we dance and laugh together in humor and camaraderie. I am reminded daily of the ship of fools we encounter daily and the ones our troops are encountering in the Middle East.  I think about the men and women and sisters and brothers who are fighting for “God and Country and Freedom”.  I am reminded of their dedication and selflessness and I thank them for my freedoms and for my humane rights, and I wish them, each of them, a safe journey home and a victorious outcome.  And I wish the people, all of the people, correct information from those in the know and not from the minds of the foolish. Everyone deserves to be free in this World filled with fools!  Free from neighborhood foolish bullies and free from world foolish bullies.  So, join us this month for an issued filled with all that makes our world turn.  Such as, information from the Committee On Aging; sleeping well on the right mattress; our aging parents; and having meaningful moments and projects with your grandchildren.

Program Overview
The Family and Consumer Science program in Chatham County seeks to strengthen families and improve the lives of Chatham County citizens through research based information, educational programs and activities. Programs this past year have focused primarily in the areas of nutrition and wellness and food safety, with approximately 850 face to face contacts. Although the two areas above were the main focus, information is disseminated and programs are conducted in all areas of family living such as parent education, child development, budgeting, consumer education, environment and housing, etc. In 1996, participants in Noonlighting I and II Weight Control Programs reported an increase in knowledge, attitudes, aspirations and skills regarding diet, exercise, lifestyle and how these relate to each other. Participants lost a total of 450 pounds by making changes in their diet and walking regularly. Newsletters in the Family and Consumer Science program include a bi-monthly Extension Homemakers newletter and a quarterly combined child care and parenting newsletter. Part VI: Collaborating with Community By Patricia Sullivan When the whole community is involved in the education system, student performance improves. Local PTAs can help build bridges to the larger community and help build support for education with the business community, with senior citizens, and with other community groups. The sixth of the National Standards for Parent/Family Involvement Programs is, "Collaborating with Community: community resources are used to strengthen schools, families, and student learning." In this final installment of our six-part series on the National Standards, Our Children examines the sixth standard and suggests ways PTAs can build strong relationships with their communities.

The family and consumer sciences education (FCSE) program at North Dakota State University has been approved by the State Board for Vocational Education for the preparation of family and consumer sciences teachers. The FCSE program is a versatile major due to the preparation of the student as both an educator and a family and consumer scientist.
    The Program
As an educator, the FCSE graduate is prepared to guide a variety of teaching-learning situations. Since education is a people-centered profession, the program focuses on characteristics of various learners or clients, learning principles and different applications of the teaching-learning process. A wide range of strategies for working with individuals or groups is included. Hands-on experience is provided throughout the program to develop the teaching skills learned in classes.
As a family and consumer sciences educator, the FCSE student is prepared with a comprehensive subject matter background. Courses from all areas of family and consumer sciences are included in the program. This contributes to the versatility of the major since the broad range of knowledge may be applied to a wide variety of settings.
