Infrared Sea Lions
Even though sea lions are warm-blooded, they are covered in a thick layer of blubber. This blubber insulates them from cold ocean temperatures and keeps the sea lion's body heat from escaping. In the images below, notice that the warmest area is the sea lion's eyes. In most of the images the sea lion is sunning itself and the heat shown is mainly from sunlight warming the sea lion's skin and fur. The last two images show the sea lions as they are emerging from the water. Notice how cool they appear!

Figuring out what a northern fur seal has eaten recently can be a messy business, says fisheries biologist Jeremy Sterling of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Mammal Laboratory in Seattle, Wash. Determining where they have been eating is a bit more high-tech. The Alaska Ecosystems Program, which includes Sterling and more than a dozen other researchers, has been using satellites to track northern fur seals and Steller sea lions in the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea for nearly a decade. With a transmitter attached to an animal's back sending signals to the Argos instrument on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's polar-orbiting satellite, the scientists can record the marine mammal's path as it swims hundreds of kilometers from land foraging for food. Now the scientists are combining their information about where the animals go to find food with data from another satellite, Topex/Poseidon, to understand why the animals choose to go where they do.

The sea lions camped out in PIER 39's West Marina have been endearingly coined, "Sea Lebrities." These California sea lions "hauled out" on PIER 39's K-Dock shortly after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The boisterous barking pinnipeds started arriving in droves, taking over the docks in January 1990. At first they numbered from 10-50, but due to a plentiful supply of herring, the available dock space and a protected environment, the population grew to more than 300 within a couple of months. Each winter the population grows as high as 900. During the summer months the sea lions tend to migrate to the Channel Islands, but now a small group chooses to stay at PIER 39's K-Dock. Year-round, weather permitting, free educational talks, provided by Marine Mammal Center volunteers, are available on weekends from 11 am to 5 pm. Hooker’s sea lion: 10 Facts
Female Hooker's sea lions
on Enderby Island
Photograph by Nick Gales Hooker’s sea lions, also known as New Zealand sea lions, are one of only 5 species of sea lions in the world, the others being the Australian sea lion, the South American sea lion, the California sea lion and Steller sea lion. Hooker’s sea lions are one of the most regionally localised and rare of the world’s seal species. They breed almost exclusively at the Auckland Islands in the New Zealand subantarctic region. A few sea lions also breed on New Zealand’s Campbell Island. The total population is estimated to be only about 12,500 animals. Historically, this species’ range also included most of the New Zealand coast, but a combination of subsistence hunting by Maori and commercial sealing by Europeans reduced the range and numbers to the present extent. The population appears to have been stable for about the past 5 decades. Female Hooker’s sea lions tend to stay reasonably close to their breeding locations, but males range further afield. Each year some male sea lions are seen on

Just four species occur north of the equator (all in the Pacific Ocean), including the California sea lion, which lives on both sides of the equator. Fur seals have longer flippers and thicker fur than do sea lions. Northern fur seal ( Callorhinus ursinus ) This species was hunted extensively for its very fine fur (over 300,000 hairs per square inch). It was saved by an international treaty signed in 1911 by Japan, Russia, the United States, and Great Britain (representing Canada). Its breeding colonies are the largest pinniped congregations, as many as 1 ½ million animals gathering on the islands of St. George and St. Paul (in the Pribilofs) alone! Eumetopias jubatus

The largest sea lion in the world, Steller sea lions once numbered over 200,000 animals. Since the 1970's a severe decline in abundance has been documented in the central and western portions of the species' range. Steller Sea Lions Steller sea lions are classified as "eared" seals. In contrast to "true" seals (such as harbor seals) they have external ears, and hind flippers that can be turned forward for walking on land. Males grow to 11 feet in length and weigh almost 2,500 pounds. Females are much smaller, and may grow to nine feet in length and weigh 1,000 pounds. Stellers have a bulky build and a very thick neck, which resembles a lion's mane, hence the name "sea lion." The greatest concentration of rookeries, or breeding grounds, is found in the Gulf of Alaska and Aleutian Islands. Pups are born on offshore islands from mid-May to mid-July, and weigh 35-50 pounds. Pups usually nurse for a year, but some continue to nurse for up to three years. Mating occurs 10-14 days after the pups are born. Dominant mature males maintain territories for one to two months and mate with many females. During the breeding season, males do not eat. Stellers are found throughout the North Pacific Rim from Japan to central California. Unlike California sea lions, Stellers tend to remain offshore or haul out in unpopulated areas. Steller sea lions eat a variety of fishes, invertebrates, and occasionally other pinnipeds.

What are the characteristics of all sea lions? Sea lions are large pinnipeds and the males tend to be much larger than the females. They have a coarse fur, which is more prominent than the underfur. They gather in large herds at mating time. The males will aggressively defend their territories and harems. Their rear flippers can be faced forward to move on land. Their flippers are bare and the claws are small. Click here to see a film clip of Steller sea lions moving on land. What are the different species of sea lion?

Pinnipeds
What are Pinnipeds? Pinnipeds are carnivorous aquatic mammals that use flippers for movement on land and in the water. Seals, sea lions, and walruses all belong to the same taxonomic suborder called Pinnipedia or the "fin-footed." Pinnipeds spend the majority of their lives swimming and eating in water and have adopted their bodies to move easily through their aquatic habitat. Pinnipeds do not move well on land, however pinnipeds do venture onto land or ice floes to bear their young, sunbathe, and molt.
How many kinds of pinnipeds are there? There are 33 species of seals, sea lions, fur seals and walrus that populate the world's oceans and lakes. All pinnipeds breath air and some are capable of very deep and prolonged dives. The northern elephant seal, for example, is capable of diving to depths over 1,500 feet and can remain under the surface of the water for 2 hours. Pinnipeds are divided into three main groups: seals (Phocidae) sea lions and fur seals (Otariidae) , and walrus (Odobenidae).

Sea Lion Monitoring and Conservation
The Charles Darwin Research Station has implemented an ecological monitoring project of the Galapagos sea lion. The overall goal is to determine the current state and abundance of the sea lions and fur seals in Galapagos in order to set the baseline for monitoring and evaluating the extent of the fisheries by-catch mortalities, impacts and natural cycles; and to evaluate the interaction related with humans activities.
The fluctuating environmental conditions of the Islands, plus the increase of human activities and their waste (hooks, propellers, nets, capes, etc.) are factors that affect the groups of animals which inhabit the Galapagos Marine Reserve, including sea lions, penguins, albatross, sea turtles, and others. This is also a potentially growing problem due the promotion of deep-water tuna and billfish fisheries to supply international markets. Sea lions and fur seals are victims of the by-catch produced by long-lines, nets and other fishing mechanisms.
Activities include:
Zalophus californianus wollebaeki
) and to implement similar monitoring for the Galapagos fur seal population ( Arctocephalus galapagoensis
Objectives:

Monitoring of the sea lion population has begun, but the success of this program depends on the comprehensiveness of data throughout the islands. The overall project is planned to last two years. The first year will be focused on concretely establishing and implementing a full monitoring program to understand the status of the sea lions populations. This information will then be used to understand the connection between human activities and drops in sea lion populations, and developing methods to protect the Galapagos sea lions and fur seals.
