Peter Dillingham's Statistics Webpage My Statistics Background I graduated in 1993 with a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Alaska . Between lecturing for the university and taking classes, in 1998 I received my M.S. in Statistics (interdisciplinary with mathematics). Areas of special interest were Bayesian hierarchical modeling, smoothing techniques, and categorical data analysis. My original interest in statistics was sparked by a desire to apply mathematical skills to fisheries and wildlife research. In fall of 1999, my family and I left Alaska for Seattle so that my wife could pursue her Ph.D. in Chemistry. Initially I worked in HIV/AIDS Research with a little bit of wildlife consulting on the side, but have recently managed to get back into fisheries and wildlife research full time. Pinnipeds - Seals and Sea Lions Seals, sea lions and walrus are currently placed in the Suborder Pinnipedia in the Order Carnivora, which also includes the bears, dogs, raccoons, and weasels (including otters). Three families of living pinnipeds are recognized, the Phocidae (earless seals or true seals), the Otaridae (eared seals or fur seals and sea lions) and the Odobenidae (walrus). The word pinnipedia translates from Latin as "fin foot," referring to their often large fin-like flippers. All pinnipeds must come ashore to breed, give birth and nurse their young, though some species are at sea for several months at a time while others return to the shore every day. Phocid seals include elephant seals, several species of ice seals (some are found in fresh water lakes) and the harbor seal of temperate coastlines. Monk seals can be currently found in the Mediterranean Sea and Hawaii, although there is one species indigenous to the Caribbean Sea that is commonly believed to be extinct. Four phocid species inhabit the Antarctic ice pack. All of these seals have a vertical undulating motion when they move on land called "galluphing" because their pelvic bone does not provide a stable anchor point for the rear flippers to engage the ground for propulsion and the rear flippers are directed rearward. The otariids, fur seals and sea lions, are found in temperate colder waters and are associated in tropical latitudes with cold water upwelling currents. They have external ear flaps (giving them the distinction of being called "eared seals"). The arm pit or axilla encloses the forelimbs to about the level of the forearm. In all the pinnipeds, the hing limbs are enclosed within the body to the level of the ankle. Sea lions and fur seals can rotate their hind feet forward and therefore use their pelvic bone to propel themselves forward with considerable speed.

The Northern Sea Lion is also commonly named the Steller Sea Lion. Appearance The Northern sea lion is the largest of the sea lions. Males may be upto 310 cm in length and weigh around 900 kg. Females are much smaller, 200 cm (291 according to Loughlin and Nelson, 1987) and they can weigh upto 300 kg. The Northern sea lion is usually yellowish brown in color. The males have distinctive manes. Pups are dark brown during the first year. Distribution Feeding The diet consists of mainly non-commercial fish species and cephalopods. Also the commercially exploited pollock can be part of the diet (Loughlin and Nelson, 1987). Population dynamics and life history The age at maturity is for females 4-5 years, for males 7-9 years (9-13 years according to Loughlin and Nelson, 1987). The pregnancy rate is 85-86%. Gestation lasts one year, including a delay of implantation of about 3 months. Longevity is estimated to be about 23 years.Pup mortality ranges, depending on the situation in the rookery, from 10 to 100%. York (1994) estimated the survival rates for animals of age 3-4 at 0.93, with slowly declining survival rates at increased age (0.841 at age 12-13). York estimated the fecundity (average number of female offspring produced by each female) of animal of 6 years and older at 0.315 for the Alaskan population.

Sea lions differ from hair seals (harbor seals, ringed seals, ribbon seals, bearded seals, and spotted seals) in that sea lions have external ears and rear flippers which turn forward allowing them to "walk" with a gait similar to land mammals. They are called sea lions because they resemble the terrestrial lion of Africa and Asia. Large adult male Steller's sea lions have disproportionately large necks and shoulders. This, coupled with longer, coarser hair on the neck and shoulders, gives them the appearance of having manes, as do lions. General description: At birth, the sea lion pup's coat is chocolate brown with a frosty appearance because the tips of the hair are colorless. Color gradually lightens as the animal ages and periodically molts. Most adult females are a yellowish, cream color on the back, although some remain darker. Nearly all males stay darker on the front of the neck and chest; some are even a reddish color. Males and females have a marked size difference. Weight at birth is 51 pounds (23 kg), and body length is 45 inches (112 cm). Females grow rapidly during the first four years but slow by the fifth year, with little growth after age 6. Males continue to grow until the eleventh year. Although there are variations, most females reach maximum size by the seventh year, and males reach adult size by the twelfth year. The average weight of an adult male is 1,245 pounds (566 kg), and the body length averages 10 2/3 feet (282 cm). Adult females average 579 pounds (263 kg) in weight and 8 2/3 feet (228 cm) in length. Although only 20 percent longer, the average adult male weighs over twice as much as the average adult female.

Welcome to the Morro Bay Aquarium located at 595 Embarcadero Morro Bay, CA 93442 The Morro Bay Aquarium was built in 1960 and is family-owned by Dean and Bertha Tyler. The Morro Bay Aquarium became a rehabilitation center for distressed mammals in 1984 and is a non-profit organization. It features three sea lions and a harbor seal that are housed here and were brought in because of their injuries or abandonment. Feeding the sea lions is fun for both children and adults. The aquarium is also a member of I.M.A.T.A (International Marine Animals Training Association) . I.M.A.T.A. meets annually and shares the latest research and development in mammal handling. Dean and Bertha Tyler were the first to raise an orphaned sea otter to adulthood. The otter, named Berdie, lived at the aquarium for ten years. The techniques the Tylers used to help Berdie have been shared and used to help many otters. Fourteen tanks line the inside of the building, allowing you to view local marine life such as fish, sharks, octopus, eels, abalone sea anemones and more.
