Stone Carving -Tools of the Trade Walter S. Arnold, Sculptor/Stone Carver Chicago, U.S.A. I carve sculpture in limestone and marble, using traditional tools and techniques which I learned as an apprentice in Italy and as a journeyman carver on the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. This site is filled with examples of the work I created with these skills, including my gargoyles and stone fireplaces Stone carving tools have not changed significantly since the technique of forging steel was developed. The pneumatic hammer was introduced between 1885 and 1890 (powered by huge steam driven air compressors), and has pretty much replaced the wooden mallet and iron hammer. Carbide tipped tools began appearing in the middle of the 20th century. Most limestone carvers still prefer the old hand forged chisels, and keep a wooden mallet close at hand. The three basic types of chisels remain the same: a point for roughing out the stone, tooth chisels (also called claw tools) for shaping and modeling the forms, and flat chisels for the finished surfaces and details. Within each class there are endless variations; for example gouges, bull-noses and miter tools are all variations on the flat chisel. Measuring and copying of designs is done in a variety of ways, depending on the requirements of the job. Architectural moldings can be cut using templets (now cut from plastic instead of the traditional zinc), which are traced on the stone. Many carvings can be done by eye, copying a drawing or rough clay or plaster model. For example, when carving my

Installation of this 9 foot tall fountain was finished in August 1996. It is built of 92 pieces of stone, and the carving was completed over a 10 month period. Carved from two types of limestone, Indiana Limestone and a golden brown Minnesota limestone, two bronze frogs sit on the edge of the pool spouting water. Water shoots out the top, cascades down, and flows from the mouths of the three lions. The central part of the fountain features a lion; water spouts from its mouth. On the bowl above its head rests a bundle of four Romanesque columns, topped by another bowl. This fountain is located in the gardens of Driehaus Capital Management at 25 E. Erie St. If you're visiting Chicago, walk by and take a look! A Monument to Mayor Harold Washington, Social Security Center, 600 W. Madison St., Chicago. His teachers were all renowned stone sculptors who guided him through the many phases of creating a piece of art in stone. Over the years, Mr. Grandbois has had over 200 students, and some have gone on to become fulltime professional sculptors. Rollie graduated from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM in 1983 where he also served as student body president that year. Rollie's work has been in galleries and exhibitions throughout the United States, Japan, Europe and Canada. His sculptures are also included in many corporate, private, and tribal collections. His largest sculpture to date weighed over 23 tons.

Curriculum Courses Sculpture is one of the oldest forms of art, and as sculptors, we are heirs to a tradition that forms an invaluable record of past civilizations. Although we can learn a great deal from this heritage, we must observe our present society through the eyes of a contemporary artist and express our vision in an appropriate manner. After all, even though we may think that the clothes of a century ago were very elegant, we would never dream of wearing them today. Modern industry produces many new types of materials, such as steel, cement, plastics, glass, and aluminum. These new materials not only bring significant changes to our lifestyles, but also affect our notion of what sculpture is and can be. It is imperative that we use new materials and technology to create new and bold sculptural images for our present-day society. Students in the Department of Sculpture acquire basic skills by working with shapes observed in nature and undergo instruction in various practical techniques. They then proceed to more personal areas of self-expression. Close student-faculty relations are essential for the exchange of ideas and the development of sculptural concepts; however, although the faculty is always ready to give advice and guidance to students, it is important for each student to develop an independent and self-sufficient attitude towards sculptural practice.
