Screenwriters/Playwrights Page 17 Surefire Ways to get Your Script Rejected 1. Where does a playwright get his ideas? From his own personal experiences, from a news story, from history. 2. What is a scenario? A plot outline. It is used by the playwright to develop the plays internal structure. 3. When in the writing process is the dialogue developed? Writing the dialogue is one of the last steps in the script development process. 4. What type of shows are normally written on spec? Most Broadway and off-Broadway scripts. A few screenplays, such as Joe Eszterhas' Basic Instinct (1992), which was bought by TriStar for three million dollars, are also written on spec. On order? Almost all television scripts, many movies, and the book, or dialogue, for most musicals. 5. How does a playwright "sell" his script? Most playwrights market their work through an agency. Some send their work directly to a regional or educational theatre. Scripts sent to a Broadway producer, or a film studio, will normally be returned unopened and unread. Because of the difficulty in getting a script mounted, some playwrights will produce their own work. They will rent a small fifty seat theatre, put a couple small ads in the paper and count on good reviews and "word of mouth" to draw an audience. Budgets for these independent, non-union shows range from $ 6,000 to $ 12,000. The average for a six week, eighteen performance run is about $ 8,000. Typically, the largest budget item is the theatre rental. Charging $ 10 to $ 15 a seat, the producer / playwright, with a little bit of luck, may break even.

Writing as a Profession
Special Study Opportunities
The curriculum of the English Department is designed to demonstrate the interaction of literature with every area of human values and human concern. The central works of English and American literature, from their great pasts to their flourishing present, are inevitably central, but they are joined by other great literatures studied in translation. In upper-division courses, instead of treating works widely varied in style, content, and theme together because they were written in the same century, the department has cut across historical lines to place side by side works dealing with the same subjects or themes or works that belong to the same genre. The requirements for the major reflect this orientation. The student with a major in English either selects a specific thematic or generic emphasis on which to focus or chooses the Writing as a Profession emphasis. Four areas of emphasis are offered by the department: Creative Writing; Drama; Literature, Society, and Politics; and Writing as a Profession. All courses listed in the catalog are offered on a regular basis, though some upper-division courses are taught only in two-year rotation.

The New Century Writer Awards® (NCWA) was established to provide valuable outlet to recognize the quality screenplays, stage plays, fiction and poetry of both unpublished and emerging writers with only small or minor creative writing credits. We also provide cash awards to the Top 5 writers in each of our five creative writing contests since monetary awards help legitimize and validate a writer's good hard work. The NCWA seeks quality, character driven stories in all genres to consider for presentation to publishers for possible publication, and to producers for possible film production. Screenplays and stage plays for both small and large film budgets are welcome since we have access to producers representing all genres and budget levels, and magazine editors who seek fiction in all genres. The final judges of each annual contest include top industry producers, directors, film marketing professionals, fiction writers, playwrights, fiction editors, screenwriters, executive producers, and literary agents.

William Craig, Instructor, Sound Arts
William Craig left home in the dead of winter at the age of 15. He hitch hiked from Pocatello to Denver, where he found work selling Bibles door-to-door. By the time he was 18 this sales job had taken him to 30 States.
After selling Bibles, rough-necking on an oil rig, and working as a cook, Craig began his formal education.
Craig's writing career began when he received the Sam Shubert Fellowship in Playwriting while completing his MA degree. The University gave two of his plays full-stage productions. With a family to support, he put writing aside and began a university teaching career. He has instructed Screenwriting, Playwriting, Creative Writing, Beginning and Advanced TV Production, and Sound Production.
Leaving teaching, he became involved in TV/Film Writing and Producing in the freelance market. He has written dramas, documentaries, and magazine shows for his clients. Many of his programs have received national awards.
For the last few years, Craig has returned to writing. He is near completion of a book on how to write screenplays, after which he will return to his first novel and get it completed.
