The package consists of Exercises, designed to develop special linguistic skills, and a reference Book, which contains a Grammar, a small selection of simplified and normalised Texts, and an Old English/Present-Day English Glossary. The Old English words needed for the Exercises are all commonly found in the Grammar and Texts. Students can access the Book at any point in the Exercise programs by clicking on the Book button at the bottom of the screen. This new package is one of several STELLA programs which has being re-written as part of this year's software upgrading process.
An Introduction to Older Scots

It contains information on the development of the Scots language from 1100 to modern times. It is designed to help the beginning student appreciate Older Scots literature.

The package consists of exercises designed to develop special linguistic skills, and a reference book which contains a grammar, a small selection of simplified and normalised texts, and an Old English/present-day English glossary. The current set of programs falls into two parts:
  • Essentials of Old English: a single series of short exercises designed as a revision-package for beginners in the subject. Essentials of Old English Plus: a suite of five distinct packages of exercises, designed to support a structured learning-programme whereby students of Old English develop a thorough grounding in the principles of Old English grammar. Students who complete this course will be ready to proceed to advanced study of texts not only with an enhanced understanding of Old English grammatical structure but also with the ability to gauge accurately the stylistic choices made by individual Anglo-Saxon writers. The variety of Old English used as the model for the programs is normalised Early West Saxon.

Scottish authors have been running red hot over the last few years both at home and abroad. If all this has passed you by here is a brief summary of some of the guiding and emerging lights in the world of contemporary Scottish literature. Ian Rankin James Ellroy calls Rankin the 'Scottish James Ellroy' which is a compliment worthy of this master of Scottish crime writing. His most famous creation Detective Inspector John Rebus is a true son of Scotland intelligent, proud, dutiful and lonely. Rankin focuses on the fractured dark side of Scotland's capital city and with each novel builds up a more complex picture both of his central character and of Edinburgh itself. A L Kennedy Considered one of Scotland's national treasures at the tender age of 35, Kennedy is a writer of startling originality and invention. She brings an innovative twist to the sometimes-hackneyed themes of isolation, passion, perversion and love. Her sixth and latest book, Everything you need , explores on many levels the intricacies and frustrations of human relationships.
