Intramural, Recreational, and Club Sports
Intramural sporting events take place within University bounds and between University teams; most students who participate enjoy sports and competition but do not choose to participate in varsity athletics. Club sports do not have varsity status, but participants do travel and compete with teams from outside the University. Recreational clubs offer students an opportunity to pursue other enjoyable athletic activities.

Navigation and seamanship courses are usually conducted ashore and are included in the AYF sailing curriculum taught by sailing schools. Power boat training centres, some TAFE Colleges and the Coastguard conduct courses too. Sailing Schools are listed on the Boating OZ Training index. Power Boating
Power boat training centres and some sailing schools and clubs offer power boat handling courses. Navigation and seamanship courses are the same as those for sailors. In NSW, the skipper of any powered vessel which exceeds 10 knots must have a licence from the NSW Waterways Authority . The multiple choice test and licence costs $47 and takes about 20 - 30 minutes. Bookings should be made the day before. Test centres are at Kent Street in the city, Blacktown, Hornsby, Miranda, Pittwater and Rozelle Bay. A study book is available free from the Waterways Authority. There is a plan to introduce a national Australian power boat licence. Sailing Schools are listed on the Boating OZ Training index. Some companies teach power boat handling too.

Held one Friday each month from May-October, this social is a chance to go out for a happy hour sail then spend time meeting other DSC members, enjoying the sunset and having some food and drinks. The fun starts at 5:30 when the boats start rigging up and going out. Your sail will be shorter than normal so we can give as many people as possible a chance to enjoy the boats. DSC members are welcome to bring guests within reason (don’t bring your whole office down) and encouraged to bring a side potluck dish or dessert e.g., chips and salsa, potato salad, brownies. History The Fleet Membership Education ... FAQ Sheet The Downtown Sailing Center (DSC) is an established nonprofit, (501c)(3) community sailing center which offers area residents sailing instruction and access to sailing without the cost of private ownership and boat maintenance. The mission of the DSC is to promote sailing by:
  • offering the community affordable access to quality sailing programs and events; providing education in sailing and water safety skills at all levels for all ages; and sponsoring both recreational and racing opportunities.
To find out more about the DSC, join us for an open house in May or June. Interested individuals are welcome to visit us, enjoy light fare and of course, go sailing! Check the calendar As a registered non-profit organization, we are always interested in discussing donations of outboard engines, boats and other marine equipment and can provide appropriate tax documentation. History Originally formed in 1990 as a private sailing organization, the Downtown Sailing Club provided full-service/no maintenance sailing (boats rigged and ready for you) to downtown executives and a junior sailing camp for their children. In 1993, it was converted by members to the Downtown Sailing Center, a nonprofit community sailing organization offering area residents sailing instruction and access to J/22 keelboats and other sailboats at a modest cost. Now, the DSC has an extensive fleet of both recreational and racing sailboats, continues to offer a junior sailing camp and now offers adult education, open recreational sailing, racing and social events to its members as well as youth outreach programs to Baltimore City youth. The DSC is one of several hundred community sailing centers recognized by the United States Sailing Association (USSA), the national governing body of sailing, and has received awards from US Sailing for

Another letter from Norman La Force, January 13 2003 Dear Mayor Bates, City Councilmembers
    Planning Commission Members, and
Berkeley Park Recreation and Waterfront Dept. Re: Marina Master Plan and Initial Study The following comments are further comments from the Sierra Club regarding the so-called Marina Master Plan and the Environmental Initial Study. These comments will also be sent by U.S. Mail with an accompanying letter from the California Dept. of Fish and Game regarding impacts of proposed recreational activity in the North Basin Cove in the Department's comments on the Eastshore State Park. These comments apply equally well to the so-called Marina Plan. A. The Marina Master Plan Is Not A Master Plan, But Is a Capital Improvement List and Should Be Identified and Called As Such to Avoid Confusion with What is a Real Master Plan One of the major issues is confusion of just what kind of document the so-called Marina Master Plan is. While it is called "Master Plan," it is nothing of the sort. As Planning Commissioner Poschman and Waterfront Commissioner Steneko have pointed out, this document is not a planning document as that term is used legally under California Planning Law. It is more appropriately called a Capital Projects Plan or a Capital Improvement List, but it is NOT a Master Plan. The document states on page 2 that, "The Plan identifies essential capital improvement projects that should be initiated in the next five years and other capital improvement projects that could be implemented over the next twenty years." While such projects could and should make up a Master Plan, there is more to a Master Plan than capital projects.

From the 1986 Berkeley Waterfront Plan
The 1986 Plan is still in effect! Here's what it has to say about the North Sailing Basin:
Encourage sheltered water sports such as small boat launching and mooring (sailing, rowing, paddle, and sail-boating), with rentals to private organizations for necessary support facilities along the eastern shore of North Waterfront Park, provided environmental standards such as protection of the Bay from leachate can be met and provided this use is consistent with the City's Master Plan for North Waterfront Park. Investigate the need for and feasibility of dredging to make possible these activities.
Provide for the eventual development by a public agency in the future of piers along the alignment of Gilman Street extension for public viewing and fishing. A lot has changed since 1986, but the sense of this element of the plan - that non-motorized small craft activity and facilities to support them should be encouraged in the North Sailing Basin - has never been modified. Both the Marina Plan and Waterfront Overview now under final development by the City planning staff, and the

    Sail test: Race or recreational
    How much can you handle?
If you wanted to go for a drive would you choose a Formula One racing car or a sporty saloon like a BMW? Well, you get much the same sort of choice with windsurfing sails. There has been much discussion of the various merits of both the full-on race sails, long the first choice rightly or wrongly for many New Zealand sailors, and the growing group of top-end recreational or blasting sails. To try to cast some light on the subject New Zealand Windsurfer arranged to test pairs of sails from three sail manufacturers. Each pair came under the scrutiny of two testers a top team sailor or representative of the brand and our intrepid publisher (hey, we had to do the tests in August which, even in Auckland, is mid-winter) who is kindly termed an intermediate level sailor (after two months of no sailing even that was debateable). For the test we rigged two identical-size, same-brand sails and tested them back to back, with the riders swapping rigs several times to try both sails. And with Auckland's gusty conditions we had a wide range of sailing conditions...
