LAKE HARTWELL One of the largest man made lakes in the south, Lake Hartwell offers fishing, camping, sailing and other recreational activities. The U.S. Corps of Engineers maintains numerous parks and camping locations along the lakes 962 miles of shoreline. With only a 25 foot setback from the lake, homes can be built on the lake with tremendous vistas and easy access, often with boat docks. Hartwell Dam is located on the Savannah River, approximately 8 miles east of the city of Hartwell on U.S. Hwy.29. The dam is also used as a hydroelectric facility to generate power during peak demand times, thus helping to give local residents low cost electricity. Public tours are available of the dam and powerhouse. Just call the local Corps of Engineers office at (706)-376-4788 for dates and times. Special tours may be arranged for groups or tours. Overtaking Situation Any vessel (including a sailing vessel) which is overtakinganother vessel must keep well clear of the vessel overtaken. sailing Vessels.
http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/imarine/rec_boating/regulations/rules_of_road.htm
The rules of the road, which apply on all waters of the State, also apply all over the world. They run to a lot of pages of fine print, but the following cover most of the encounters you will have with other vessels.
  • All the time you are on the water you must keep a good lookout and be ready to give way to other vessels.
  • If you must give way, do it in good time and make a move which will be obvious to the other vessels.
  • In general, power boats have to keep out of the way of sailing and fishing vessels, and vessels that are hampered by such tasks including dredging, cable laying and so on.
  • Always keep to the right hand side of channels - golden rule "look to the right, give way to the right, turn to the right and stay to the right".
Operating Rules Port
If a power driven vessel approaches within this sector maintain your course and speed with caution. Starboard
If any vessel approaches within this sector, keep out of its way. (Note: This rule may not always apply if one or both vessels are sailboats.) Stern
If any vessel approaches this sector, maintain your course and speed with caution.

sailing Vessels Underway sailing vessels while underway (being motor driven)shall exhibit navigation lights applicable to power driven vessels.
http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/imarine/rec_boating/regulations/nav_lights.html
Navigation Lights
For a complete discription of Navigation lights please
Navigating at night requires special care and attention. Vessels that operate from sunset to sunrise, whether at anchor or underway, must carry and exhibit the correct lights. A vessel is underway when not anchored, moored to the shore or aground. Navigation lights must also be displayed during daylight hours in periods of restricted visibility. All boats, whether used for commercial purposes or for pleasure boating, must comply with the regulations concerning lighting. It is crucial the lights on your boat be placed and displayed appropriate to the size and class of your boat. These lights tell other boat operators what your boat is doing - whether it is at anchor, under sail or motoring. This guide will assist you in understanding the correct use of navigation lights on your boat. Range of Visibility of Lights Vessels 12 metres to 20 metres
  • Masthead light - 3 miles.
  • Sidelight and stern light - 2 miles.
  • All round lights - 2 miles.

    • Current Newsletter Yearbook ... Objectives About USNSA Member Branches Member Branches in CONUS Member Branches Abroad USNSA Officers ... Home About USNSA 1. The US Naval Sailing Association (USNSA) is an organization of military-affiliated, predominantly Navy members formed to promote fleet readiness and personal professionalism. It works to strengthen naval ties to our national maritime heritage by encouraging and assisting Commanding Officers in promoting sailing and boating as part of their training and recreational programs. USNSA administers the Navy and DoD sailing standards and qualification system. Three categories of members make up USNSA: Command Members, Branch Members, and Individual Members. 3. There are about 40 branches of USNSA, usually associated with a marina. However, not all branches are associated with a marina nor do all marinas have branches. Most branches fall into one of three types: Sailing Clubs, Yacht Clubs, or Sailing Associations. Branches usually consist of individuals, both active and retired, who band together to promote sailing activities in their areas. Commanding Officers are expected and encouraged to recognize any local USNSA branch as their advisory group, and most do so.
