University of Rhode Island (URI) recreational Services offers beginningand intermediate sailing lessons to the general public.

SUMMER 2003 SAILING PROGRAMS
For the 2003 season, we will again be offering beginner, intermediate, and adult keelboat sailing lessons to the general public. Beginners are taught the basics of sailing from rigging and launching to steering and boat handling to finally sailing on their own. A fleet of 12 ft. Tech dinghies is used for novice sailors. Intermediate sailors use 14 ft. Flying Junior sloops and are taught more advanced boat handling techniques and use of the spinnaker. Sailing lessons for children (ages 10-12) and youths (ages 13-16) are also available.
For those sailors interested in competitive sailboat racing, a separate two-week Racing Class is also offered for the 2003 season. The class begins May 12, 2002 and takes sailors through an entire race course from starts to mark roundings to finishes. Instruction includes racing rules and tactics as well as boat handling techniques. The course finishes with the Great Salt Pond Regatta to determine the class champion. Most class participants go on to race in our summer Friday Night racing series.

Hostellers Sailing Club - All about Dinghy Cruising
There is quite a lot about dinghy cruising in this website. I think this is excusable since this activity has become one of the main activities of the HSC and it is an activity which distinguishes the HSC from most other sailing clubs. Contents (for this page only)

What is dinghy cruising?
By 'dinghy cruising we mean the use of a sailing dinghy for recreational travel over relatively long distances, generally with overnight stops. Most dinghy sailors use their boats for racing, or just for pottering, which usually means sailing for an hour or two in one patch of water. Few dinghy sailors seem to be aware that their boats are potentially capable of covering greater distances and carrying all the equipment that will be needed for overnight stops. I suppose that if you want a definition of dinghy cruising then you need to supplement it with a definition of a dinghy. In this context we take a dinghy to be a small (say less than about 20 foot length), open (i.e. no permanent cabin) sailing boat which does not have heavy stabilising ballast. However, we don't need to apply these conditions too rigorously, there are some boats which most people would think of as dinghies but which do have some ballast (my own boat is one) and there are some which have a tiny cabin but which are otherwise dinghy like in style. The HSC Wayfarers are certainly dinghies in all respects. There are also a growing number of people cruising with what are basically rowing boats, perhaps with a small sail to provide relaxation on downwind legs only, this can reasonably be included as a form of dinghy cruising.

MEDIA KITS Boating Life Cruising World Fly Fishing ISW Garden Design Kite Boarding Marlin Sailing World Saveur Sport Diver Sport Fishing Wake Boarding WaterSki Wind Surfing Sailing World Magazine CONTRIBUTOR INFORMATION (SAILING WORLD GUIDELINES FOR WRITERS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS) Guidelines for Writers:
Prospective contributors to Sailing World should study recent issues of the magazine to determine appropriate subject matter. The emphasis here is on performance sailing: keep in mind that the Sailing World readership is relatively educated about the sport. Unless you are dealing with a totally new aspect of sailing, you can and should discuss ideas on an advanced technical level; however, extensive formulae and graphs don't play well to our audience. When in doubt as to the suitability of an article or idea, submit a written query before time and energy are misdirected. (Because of the volume of queries received, editors cannot accept phone calls.) All mss. should be typewritten and double-spaced. Unless specific arrangements have been made ahead of time with Sailing World, submissions must include all necessary artwork and photos. (See Sailing World's Photographer's Guidelines.) Materials should bear the contributor's name, address and phone number. Unsolicited articles should be sent as queries via e-mail. If the article idea is accepted, the full text can then be sent as a text or Microsoft Word document on a floppy disk (Mac or Windows format). The disk should be sent with a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
