Dinghy Database History Page A brief history of dinghy sailing in Britain Sailing has been an Olympic event since 1900. Dinghy sailing in Britain was far from a nationally organised sport, and most dinghies were designed as local classes, like the Brigham Scow Hornsea 15 and the North Norfolk 16 Click here to see some of these early boats In 1935 the only dinghy raced in the UK on a national basis was the expensive International 14 , and to encourage dinghy sailing the Royal Yachting Association published rules for a simpler and cheaper boat. The first National 12 was designed by Uffa Fox and launched in 1936. The Twelve proved extremely popular, and by the first championships in September of that year over 150 boats had been built The Fairey company used the same moulded and glued veneer technique they had used to build Mosquito aircraft to make the Uffa Fox designed Firefly , which was adopted as the Olympic single-handed class at the 1948 London games.

How would you have behaved if you had lived in ancient Sparta? (Lie, cheat, steal, because that is the Sparta way!) Or in ancient Athens? Or in Corinth, Argos or Megara? Meet the Greeks! They were a riot! The ancient Greeks were very proud of their city-state ! They were also proud of being Greek. The ancient Greeks were thinkers. They loved to talk. They honored their gods and respected honor. They loved beauty, music, literature, drama, philosophy, politics and art. If you're in a hurry, use the cheat sheet to find just what you need! Didn't find what you needed? Try this! Have a great year! INTRODUCTION:
The earliest Greek civilizations thrived nearly 4,000 years ago.Yet, their culture still impacts our lives today, in the arts, in philosophy, and in science, math, literature and politics. The ancient Greeks were great builders, thinkers, philosophers and military strategists. Here are some of the gifts the ancient Greeks gave to the world:
  • Trial by Jury
  • Greek Myths
  • Democracy
  • Tragedy and Comedy
  • Theatre
  • The Olympics
The ancient Greeks did not have one king or queen. They lived in city-states. Each city-state was a separate political unit. Daily life was somewhat different in the Greek city-state of Athens, for example, than it was in the city-state of Sparta, or even in Corinth!

For the first time in Olympic history gold medallists of the host country were featured on that country's stamps and available to the public within twenty-four hours following a medal win. A stamp template was designed to allow for an image of the winning athlete(s) to be placed into it. The stamps are square which provided design flexibility allowing for both individuals and the teams, the Australian Olympic Team logo, different backgrounds and individual and event names. In the case of a gold medal won by a team, the names of the team members were placed in the sheetlet selvedge. The stamps were printed in two ways. Wrestling ATHLETICS 100 metres The 100-metre dash is the show stopper of the Olympic Games, and one of the events in the original modern Games, in 1896. Eight runners qualify for the final, and they blast in a straight line down the track in lanes that are between 1.22 and 1.25 metres wide. Each runner is allowed only one false start, which is determined by pressure plates built into the runner's starting block. A runner has finished the race when his or her shoulders or torso cross the finish line. This has been a signature event for Canada over the years. Percy Williams of Vancouver won the 100 metres at the 1928 Games in Amsterdam, Harry Jerome won bronze in 1964, Ben Johnson won bronze in 1984 before winning gold and being humiliatingly disqualified for drugs in 1988. And Donovan Bailey won gold in Atlanta four years ago. Canadian women also fared well initially. Bobbie Rosenfeld won silver and Ethel Smith bronze in Amsterdam in 1928. Hilda Strike struck silver in 1932.

  • The Round Square schools Philosophy and origins of the Round Square Is King Constantine still involved in sailing? What is the King's role within the International Olympic Commission? ... Why doesn't the King respond to criticism?
    The Round Square schools
Round Square embraces an international group of schools, which share a commitment to the educational principles of Dr Kurt Hahn.
The renowned educationalist believed that the schooling process should, above all, prepare students to tackle life by giving them the autonomy to develop both as individuals and as active members of their community. Principles should be substantiated by deeds, and both should uphold the ethics of democratic life.
Over the years, Round Square has strived to put Dr Hahn's ideals to practice, primarily by participating in numerous voluntary projects both within and beyond their communities.
The collective, altruistic spirit of Round Square is strengthened by annual international meetings, during which, students, teachers, headmasters and trustees are actively involved and through continuous efforts to help communities in need with local and international projects.
    For more info click here
Philosophy and origins of the Round Square
The educational philosophy prevailing in the Round Square schools was developed by Dr Kurt Hahn. The catastrophe of WWI moved Hahn to form a novel formative approach, based on providing children with the stimuli, responsibility and ethics to proudly and effectively support their community, while developing individual strengths.

In 1895 the Long Beach Improvement Society formed to promote parks and beaches as tourist destinations to boost the local economy. Its work succeeded wildly on July 4, 1902 when a public indoor pool filled with sea water opened to a crowd of 60,000 at a time when the City's population was 1,800. During the 1930s Federal Works Progress Administration supported the development of recreational facilities throughout Long Beach. Projects included the construction of Auditorium Park on the beach at American Avenue, the Woodland Terrace Theater at Recreation Park, a championship golf course at Recreation Park, high tide breakwaters at Alamitos Bay State Park, the creation of a municipal nursery, comfort stations, tennis courts, preparations for the 10th Olympiad and club house renovations.
