Songs of the Russian People
by W. R. S. Ralston
Contents Start Reading This book, despite its title, is a treasure-trove of Slavic mythology, tradition, folklore and ethnography. There are plenty of songs, not only from Russia but every part of the Slavic region from Serbia to Siberia. The songs are used as a starting point for a wide-ranging discussion of pre-industrial Slavic peasant life, including weddings, funerals, witchcraft, demonology, games, riddles, and seasonal traditions. Also covered are the details of Russian pagan religion and mythology, with comparisons to related topics such as Vedic and Germanic mythology. Lacking are samples or analysis of the songs in the original language (except for a very brief treatment in appendix B), and there are no musical transcriptions or descriptions of dance. However, the massive, well documented, and very entertaining collection of Slavic traditions in this book more than makes up for this deficiency. Title Page

National Mythology
by
Rini Bhattacharya Mehta
University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana IL
Review of:
Myths and Nationhood. New York: Routledge, 1997.
  • In October 1996, the newly established Centre for the Study of Nationalism in Europe (University of London) embarked on their first venture: a two-day international conference, on 'Myths and Nationhood' in the University of London. The present volume Myths and Nationhood
  • The entire collection can be divided thematically into two sections. The first section consists of three articles of a general theoretical nature, while the longer second section consists of specific case studies, mostly from post-cold-war Eastern Europe. There is one paper on 'American Nationhood,' and one on Afrikaner nationalism.
  • [T]he collective appropriation of antiquity, and especially of shared memories of the 'Golden Age,' contributes significantly to the formation of nations. The greater, the more glorious that antiquity appears, the easier it becomes to mobilize the people around a common culture, to unify the various groups of which they are composed and to identify a shared national identity. (39)
  • Mary Fullbrook's study of the rupture between the lived memory of the people of GDR and the great anti- Fascist and Imperialist myth propagated by the East German government makes "Myth-Making and National Identity: The Case of GDR" appealing reading. Fullbrook describes how the people of GDR, many of whom remembered their own complicity in the Nazi repressive regime and most of who had traumatic memories of the rape, pillage and plunder that accompanied 'Liberation' by the Red Army, had to yield to an official memory. They were forced to recognize, against their own memories, that

    THE YELTSIN MYTHOLOGY
Opinion Section, Los Angeles Times (Sunday edition), November 14, 1993 by Gregory Freidin The specter of despotism haunts Russian politics, one born of incompetence. Few would argue that much of the responsibility for the near total failure of Russian politics lies with Boris N. Yeltsin’s defeated adversaries. Blame for last month’s bloody confrontation must be shared by the Yeltsin government and the president himself. For more than two years Yeltsin has been Russia's preeminent ruler and acknowledged as such by the majority of citizens. The time is ripe to take a closer look at his leadership and the myths that have grown up around it. Myth #1 The only way Yeltsin could solve the country's problems was to disband the Parliament . While it has some basis in reality, this myth cloaks a sobering truth: Yeltsin is incapable of functioning in a democratic context. The Parliament he dissolved was the same body that elected him speaker in 1991 despite Gorbachev’s strong opposition; amended the constitution to include a respectable bill of rights; founded the office of a popularly elected President; and following the failed coup of August, 1991, granted Yeltsin the powers to govern by decree.

    Hercules
    Young Hercules
Hercules's mother was Alcmena or Alcmene, the wife of King Amphitryon of Troezen. His father was none other than Zeus, the king of the gods, who disguised himself as Amphitryon and visited Alcmena on a night that lasted as long as three ordinary nights. Zeus's wife, Hera, was furious when she learned that Alcmena was pregnant with Zeus's child. She sent witches to Troezen to stop Alcmena from going into labor, but the witches failed and Alcmena gave birth to twins: Hercules (or Heracles), Zeus's son, and Iphicles, Amphitryon's son. Hera sent two giant snakes to kill Hercules in his cradle. His mother saw the snakes and called to her husband for help, but Hercules stood up and strangled the snakes with his bare hands. In another version of this story, it was Amphitryon who put the snakes in the babies' bed. A soothsayer had told him of Zeus's visit to Alcmena, and Amphitryon wanted to find out which twin was Zeus's son. When Hercules killed the snakes while Iphicles cried and tried to escape, Amphitryon's question was answered. Amphitryon acted as a father to Hercules and even taught him to drive a chariot. Hercules had many teachers. A famous thief, Autolycus, taught him to wrestle. Prince Castor of Sparta taught him to fence, and Prince Eurytus of Oechalia taught him to shoot a bow. Hercules's low intelligence and terrible temper sometimes interfered with his lessons. When his music teacher, Linus, hit him, Hercules went into a rage and smashed Linus with his lyre, killing him. He was tried for the murder, pleaded self defense, and was acquitted.
