Friends of Phanagoria A Meeting of East and West The Classics Department at Royal Holloway , which has a long tradition of excellence in research, has concluded an agreement for a major collaborative project in classical archaeology. Recent political changes in eastern Europe have opened up to western scholars sites previously unavailable and have allowed academics from eastern and western Europe to exchange ideas freely. Against this background, archaeologists from Royal Holloway are working in Phanagoria together with their colleagues from the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow . They will be assisted by archaeologists from other colleges within the University of London. This is an exciting new development for British scholarship - there has never been a British archaeological presence in this part of the world. Koetje tkoetje@grove.iup.edu North Ossetia is situated in the center of the Caucasian isthmus between the Caspian and the Black Seas. It is very mountainous with well-defined vertical environments situated between 100 and 5000 m AMSL. In the ancient past it attracted people due to the variety of habitats and its diversity of animal and plant life. It is generally thought that human occupation of the Caucasus began in the Acheulean (700,000 to 400,000 years ago) during the Gunz-Mindel. However, artifacts dating to ca. 1 million years ago have been discovered at Azych Cave, in Azerbaidjan, and the site of Dmanisi in Georgia is dated to ca. 1.9 mya, and contains H. erectus fossils.

Maritime Archaeology in northwest Russia by Petr Sorokin The first underwater archaeological works in Russia started in the beginning of our century. In this time an ancient harbour was investigated at Feodosia, at the Black Sea, as well as a post-medieval boat in the northern part of Chudskoe Lake. But those were only the first experiences from land archaeologists in a water environment. The beginning of maritime archaeology as a special part of archaeological science, is connected with works by Orbelly and Blavatsky in the 1930s - 50s. The first underwater archaeological activities were concentrated on investigations of ancient monuments in the Black Sea. During the following time, several maritime archaeological groups existed in different parts of Russia, including St Petersburg. Presently, underwater search in St Petersburg is realised by different organisations, associations and clubs. This is coordinated by the Institute of the History of Material Culture and the Institute of Archaeology . Both institutes belong to the Russian Academy of Science, and give special permission for underwater investigations and keep scientific supervision of these works.

Russian or Swedish Marine Fortifications on the Bottom of the Bay of Tallinn by Vello Mäss A huge mound of stones and timber with an approximate area of 3500 m was found on the bottom of the Bay of Tallinn by the amateur marine archaeologists of the Estonian Maritime Museum in 1985 (Fig. 1). Judging by the state of preservation of this stone and wooden construction, lying between the depths of 8 to 11.5 metres and 900 metres offshore, the newly discovered object could be dated to the 18 th century, but its purpose and origin remain uncertain. Ends of the thick logs were fastened to each other using tenons in some places, but the whole construction seemed to be badly damaged, parts completely destroyed. In close vicinity the ruins, three strong and massive log-frames, filled with stones, were found. Fig. 1. Location of the newly found object within the Bay of Tallinn. According to historical sources, the marine fortification Citadel had been erected there in the 1720`s. "It is an encyclopedia of Scythian animal art because you have all the animals which roamed the region, such as panther, lions, camels, deer, etc. This is the original Scythian style, from the Altai region, which eventually came to the Black Sea region and finally in contact with ancient Greece, and it resembles almost an Art Nouveau style." Russian and German archaeologists excavated a Scythian burial mound on a grassy plain that locals have long called the Valley of the Kings because of the large number of burial mounds of Scythian and other ancient nomadic royalty. The fierce nomadic Scythian tribes roamed the Eurasian steppe, from the northern borders of China to the Black Sea region, in the seventh to third centuries B.C. In the fifth and fourth centuries B.C. they interacted with the ancient Greeks who had colonized the Black Sea region, which is now in Ukraine and southern Russia. Not surprisingly ancient Greek influence was evident in Scythian gold previously discovered, but the recent find dates from before contact with the Greeks and from the heart of Siberia where, scholars say, contact with outsiders can almost be excluded.
