Two thousand years ago, the Greeks discovered rowing with oars was better and faster than paddling. Rowing was used primarily for transporting warships and cargo boats until racing became popular in England and the United States. In fact, rowing was the first intercollegiate sporting event in the United States. In 1852 - 23 years after the first Oxford-Cambridge race in England - Harvard beat Yale in a two-mile race on a lake in New Hampshire. The historic competitions and boat clubs that started 150 years ago are still thriving, and rowing has also become a year-round activity for men and women who want to stay fit and have fun. There are more than 500 organizations for novices to professionals, and most health clubs have indoor rowing machines for people who want a low-impact workout that exercises all of the major muscle groups. HISTORY The Milwaukee Rowing Club was founded in 1894 and for nearly 100 years rowed on the Milwaukee River above the North Avenue dam which, until the 1930's, was the city's principal recreational area with swimming beaches, swimming schools, and canoeing and rowing clubs. The Club is not Milwaukee's first or only rowing club. In the late 19 th Century there was an earlier club called the Milwaukee Boat Club and other rowing clubs. LOCATION Until it burned in 1961, the Club boathouse was located at the east end of the North Avenue dam. The Club then moved to the former Downer College boathouse in Hubbard Park until that burned in 1989. After that fire, the Club moved below the dam to its present location at 1990 North Commerce Street, less than a mile from its original site. Construction is just beginning on a new boathouse as part of the Beerline River Homes and River Court development . During construction, The Rowing Club is temporarily located at 1645 N. Water St. , the former Pfister-Vogel tannery shipping facility. This location was made possible by the Mandel Group , who have very kindly allowed the use of their property.

Di Ellis welcomed the participants, many of whom had enjoyed the previous evening's dinner at Leander Club. The aim of the seminar was to discuss ways of developing pleasure rowing over the next few years in order to increase participation in the sport overall. Di then introduced Pat Sherwin as a leading light in organising rowing tours and someone who is passionate about recreational rowing and therefore an ideal person to lead the discussion.
    2. Pat Sherwin - Touring in the UK
Recreational rowing formed a part of most clubs' agenda until about 30 years ago, when the competitive side took over. Until the early 90s, the only touring rowers seen in this country were Dutch and German. In 1992, Pat and Greg Jones attended the first FISA Fixed Seat Conference and saw how important this aspect of rowing was. In 1994 they organised the first ARA Tour from Wallingford to Weybridge, which was a great success, and it is now held every year, alternating between the Thames and the Severn and Avon. This year's ARA tour will be held from 26th - 28th July on the Avon from Stratford toTewkesbury.

Rowing is a great way to get fit and meet new people. Can you imagine anything more peaceful than the quiet hum of a boat gliding across the smooth water of the Canning River? Rowing is the ultimate team sport, and that team spirit can be enjoyed in both a competitive and a recreational environment. Whether it's the thrill of speed or the camaraderie of a shared experience that excites you, rowing is a sport with much to offer. Membership is open to any person over 14 years of age. Approxiamately half of the club members are Murdoch University students or graduates, but the remaining club members have discovered our club through our many innovative programmes that link our club with the wider community. Rowers come from all walks of life and all shapes and sizes. If you have some rowing experience, you can join any time, but if you are new to the sport, the best option is to take part in one of our learn to row courses. We are currently focusing on adult programmes, but in some years school based programmes are also offered. Community Learn to Row Murdoch University Rowing Club runs a structured course each January that is advertised to the wider community. The course runs for six (6) weeks beginning with a land-based session to introduce the equipment, basic rowing action and safety procedures. Over the remaining five (5) weeks, different aspects of rowing technique are introduced so that participants will be able to row merrily down the stream! It does take a little time to get used to the action of rowing, but this course provides a solid introduction to set you up for further participation. Previous participants have ranged in age from 14 to 60. We normally have 2 - 3 groups that we match up based on age and interests so you are sure to find new friends.
