History
When the UTS team, and their compatriots in the Australian rowing team, take the water in Sydney, they will be continuing a proud tradition. Rowing has long been a popular Australian sport. Amateur rowing races stretch back almost as far as colonization, and by the second half of the 19th century a lucrative professional league was being run. Rowing was overtaken by other sports in the second half of the 20th century, but is experiencing a renaissance of late. More than 50,000 people are now involved in the sport around Australia as members of more than 250 rowing clubs.

Redgrave joins the greats Five Olympic campaigns, five gold medals. Briton Steve Redgrave made the Sydney Olympic rowing regatta his own with victory in the coxless fours to seal his place in history as the only person to have won five gold medals in consecutive Games in an endurance event. However it was not such a happy regatta for the Australians. After winning two gold medals in Barcelona and another two in Atlanta, the failure of the 2000 team to bring home a single gold medal was a bitter pill. All events run from Sunday 17 September to Sunday 24 September.

  • An historical query: "I'm trying to hunt down the origins of a trophy - the Dewar Shield, that is in the possession of one of my clubs (West Australian RC) old members. The Shield was presented to George Rogers on 3 occasions, 1902, 1903 and 1904 for sculling (which race, where?) by the Iris Rowing Club, somewhere in the UK. The shield was donated by Sir Richard Thomas Dewar MP. George left for Perth, Australia in 1905, taking the shield, which had become his own after the third win. Can any of your readers help fill in the rest? Where was IRIS RC? What distance was the race? Who was Richard Dewar..? Thanks, Tim Downs

Kathleen Heddle — Rowing Kathleen Heddle and her longtime rowing partner, Marnie McBean, worked well together to become two of the most successful athletes in Canadian Olympic history. The dynamic duo brought home a pair of gold medals from the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona and added a gold and a bronze from the 1996 Atlanta Games to their collection as well. The quiet Heddle and the more outgoing McBean made a terrific team, combining to capture a impressive four Olympic medals in four different events. Heddle, now 36, credits her family for having the biggest influence on her rowing career. She looked up to and admired her two older sisters and followed them into sports. Growing up in Vancouver, she tried hard to match or beat their accomplishments. Heddle discovered rowing while attending the University of British Columbia. She started the sport in 1985 at the age of 19 and quickly advanced. Two years later, she won a gold medal at the Indianapolis Pan American Games.

The Globe and Mail Sydney It was a nice bit of Australian good will. The friendly Queensland city of Rockhampton built a $200,000 (Australian) training centre for the Canadian rowing team. This is an even more stunning gesture when you realize that the entirely Australian-funded centre was custom built for the Canadian team to prepare for the Sydney Olympic Games. It is the equivalent of a Montreal suburb happily paying for a Toronto Maple Leafs training arena. Canada and Australia are fierce rowing rivals. Canadian pairs world champions Emma Robinson and Theresa Luke were upset recently by an Australian boat at a World Cup regatta in Europe. At the Olympics, both boats are pegged as gold medal prospects. "The Canadians looked at several locations to hold their pre-Olympic training camp," Rockhampton rowing coach Alan Bromiley, said. "When they chose Rockhampton, we raised $100,000 to build a secure boat shed and got another $100,000 to build a buoyed 2,000-metre [Olympic distance] course.

The style and rhythm of the rower's strokes are a series of clearly distinguishable actions that reflect a pattern of continuous movement and fluid motion. This entire sequence of rhythmical, balanced movements is repeated 32 to 40 times per minute depending on conditions, strategy, and length of the race.

Boats compete in two basic categories: sculling and sweep rowing. Both men's and women's races are rowed on a 2,000-meter course no matter what the event. In sweep rowing, two, four, or eight crewmembers sit facing the stern of the boat, each rower pulling one oar. In some of the pairs and fours events, the vessel is steered by a non-rowing "coxswain" (pronounced cox-n) who sits in the stern of the boat, facing the crew. The job of the coxswain is to steer the boat, decide tactics, and establish and maintain the speed and rhythm of the strokes of the rowers. The other form of rowing, in which no coxswain is used, is called "sculling," or "scull racing." It is performed singly, by a pair, or by four rowers. Each rower, or "sculler," faces the stern and pulls a pair or oars.

A Brief History of Rowing This section should provide those of you new to rowing (and indeed any of you experienced rowers who are simply ignorant to the sport's makeup!) an idea of the rowing structure in the modern day, as well as giving you a brief outline of the origins of the sport and its social history. Modern day rowing is a highly professional and competitive sport which is carried out from school and club level nationally, right through to Olympic level. The body which oversees all of this world-wide is the FISA . This group is responsible for the majority of the international regattas such as the world championships and world cup meetings. In this country the governing body is the Amateur Rowing Association (ARA) . The majority of clubs in this country are affiliated to the ARA who organise regattas all over the country which contribute to national league tables. This makes up the vast majority of the British rowing calendar. However outside of this are various smaller organisations examples of which are the Coastal Amateur Rowing Association (CARA), and the University Rowing League . They organise their own regattas and leagues not overseen by the ARA, although largely using ARA rules as guidelines.

Steve makes Olympic history then sends a message to our readers
September 26, 2000 : Olympic hero Steve Redgrave has sent a message from Australia to thank the people of Buckinghamshire for their support. The sporting legend sent an e-mail to the Bucks Free Press which also said he cannot wait to get back to celebrate with the people from his home town of Marlow. And a huge street party is being arranged after the 38-year-old rower and his three team mates won the coxless fours final on Saturday, making Steve the first Olympian to win five consecutive gold medals in an endurance event. Steve, from Marlow Bottom, said: "What a great race! It felt good to be back on the Olympic podium. The public and media attention has been overwhelming. I look forward to returning to Marlow to celebrate with the people of my home town, and thank all those who have supported me throughout my career." Redgrave was born in Marlow and started rowing at the age of 14 on the advice of his head teacher Francis Smith at Great Marlow School.
