Rosa, Rose Rosa, Rose The rose has a fascinating history, from the romantic fables of its genesis in mythology and its place in the sociological history of the world, to its evolution as part of the garden landscape. In this latter role it has been an important ingredient since the days of the Chinese dynasties and the ancient civilisations of Asia Minor, Greece and Rome. The Romans, in particular, embraced the delights of the rose in many walks of life, with thriving rose fields tended by slaves, just south of Rome. By Victorian times it was very much the fashion for genteel society to have a separate formal rose garden created within the boundaries of their main garden. Then, at the beginning of the twentieth century, the esteemed designer Gertrude Jekyll led the way to a more relaxed method of using roses, with a pioneering use of mixed borders as well as climbers and ramblers. Modern roses have been cultivated for greater disease resistance, affordability and ease of growing. They can adapt to most soils and conditions and are not difficult to prune. If there is a space to be filled in any garden, there is a rose that will quite happily fill it. Furthermore, there is no other group of flowering shrubs that can provide such relatively trouble-free gardening while remaining in flower from June through to winter.

Rose gardening secrets from a master gardener Growing beautiful roses can be one of your most challenging flower gardening experiences, yet one of the most rewarding. Whether you choose grandifloras, hybrid teas, floribundas, miniatures, or one of the old fashioned varieties, the unfolding of that first splendid bud will make all the extra effort worthwhile. The first and most important consideration in rose gardening is location. The healthiest rose growing in the best soil under ideal moisture conditions will NOT bloom if it does not receive at least six or seven hours of direct sunlight each day. Morning sun is best because it will dry dew quickly from leaves and petals, helping prevent problems with mold and mildew. The sunny east side of a house or fence is an ideal locaton. If all the sunny areas around your home are decked or paved, don't despair; roses can be grown in containers.

Water: Roses don't like there leaves wet. Drops of water on the leaves can cause burning, and lead to black spot disease. Always water from underneath, soaking the earth until it is damp but not soggy.
It is better to water thoroughly once a week than lightly several times in the same period. If you give Roses too much water, they'll drown. Water in the morning or at least four or five hours before dusk so that any excess moisture can be absorbed by the heat of the day.

Obsessed With Growing Things (and watching them)
    My philosopy of gardening.
Hi there. Bob Bauer here. Gardening is my alternate main obsession (making art being the other). I see the two as connected. What I really love to do is to sit or wander in my garden and watch the birds, butterflies, bees, wind and sun do their thing while I keep a low profile and observe. The actual work and puttering of gardening has its own appeal, but what I really crave is being in the middle of a beautiful natural setting full of living and growing things. Watching the life changes of a small ecosystem gets you in touch with the transient nature of your own life. Many events in your garden, as in your own life, only happen once and only at a particular day and time.
