Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919)
U.S. president. Author. Big-game hunter. Political reformer. Cavalryman. Conservationist. Rancher. Nobel Peace Prize winner. Few individuals have lived as eclectic, as active, or as productive a life as Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) did. On October 27, his birthday, give your students the opportunity to learn about the 26th president of the United States. Check out some great Web sites for teaching about Theodore Roosevelt.
Theodore Roosevelt was, in many ways, one of the most influential and accomplished leaders in American history. The 26th president, known as a "trust buster," broke up some of the nation's largest corporations, helped secure the passage of the Meat Inspection Act for consumer protection, and greatly expanded the powers and responsibilities of the presidency. In foreign affairs, Roosevelt reversed the previous policy of isolationism and ensured the country its place as a world leader. Perhaps his greatest and most lasting contribution was in the area of conservation. Through the creation of national forests, federal bird reservations, and national game preserves, Roosevelt protected more than 200 million acres of land through the federal government. Roosevelt's personal life was every bit as interesting and varied as his public life. A sickly child who suffered from asthma, he took on a regimen of exercise, weightlifting, and boxing to improve his health and his competitive edge. Largely self-educated, Roosevelt later graduated with honors from Harvard University. A life-long book-lover and prolific writer he wrote dozens of non-fiction books on a wide array of subjects he was also an avid outdoorsman whose experiences as a rancher and a big-game hunter are legendary.

Theodore Roosevelt
by James Hajik
Theodore Roosevelt One of the most colorful Presidents of the United States was Teddy Roosevelt. Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858, in New York City. His parents were Theodore Roosevelt Sr. and Martha Bulloch. "Teedie," as his close friends and family called him, was the second child of four. As he grew up he developed a love of natural history and reading, as well as hunting, boxing, and wrestling. He was educated in expensive private elementary and high schools.
Teddy at his College Graduation Roosevelt went to Harvard from 1876 to 1880, where his hard work led him to the Columbia University Law School. During his Harvard years, he met Alice Lee, whom he married after his graduation. They settled in New York, where he wrote a book entitled The Naval War of 1812 . Eventually, he came to the world of politics, and in 1881, was elected as a Republican to the New York State Assembly. Here, he worked with members of both parties, but did not run again in 1884 because of family problems.
On February 14, 1884, his wife had died while giving birth to a daughter who survived. Also, on that same day, his mother passed away. Roosevelt left New York and moved out west to Montana where he started the Elkhorn Ranch. Here, for two years, he ran his ranch and continued to write. In 1886, however, he returned to the New York City, entered politics, and took third in the race for Mayor of New York City. He met and married Edith Carow the same year. They moved to Long Island, where they had five children.

The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt

by Edmund Morris Awarded the Pulitzer Prize Book Description Described by the Chicago Tribune as "a classic," The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt stands as one of the greatest biographies of our time. The publication of The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt on September 14th, 2001 marks the 100th anniversary of Theodore Roosevelt becoming president. Paperback - 944 pages 2001 moder edition (November 20, 2001) Modern Library; ISBN: 0375756787 Theodore Rex by Edmund Morris In this lively biography, Edmund Morris returns to the gifted, energetic, and thoroughly controversial man whom the novelist Henry James called "King Theodore." In his two terms as president of the United States, Roosevelt forged an American empire, and he behaved as if it was his destiny. In this sequel to his Pulitzer Prize-winning biography The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt , Morris charts Roosevelt's accomplishments: the acquisition of the Panama Canal and the Philippines, the creation of national parks and monuments, and more. "Collaring Capital and Labor in either hand," Morris writes, Roosevelt made few friends, but he usually got what he wantedand earned an enduring place in history.

THEODORE ROOSEVELT
Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) was, at different times, rancher, big-game hunter, and explorer, as well as politician. He learnt politics as a reforming Republican in New York. As a colonel in the US Army, he led the 'Rough Riders' - a volunteer cavalry unit in the 1898 Spanish-American War. Later that year he was elected governor of New York, and in 1901 became vice-president. In 1901 Roosevelt became the youngest-ever US president after the assassination of President McKinley. Brilliant, flamboyant, and energetic, Roosevelt was immensely popular. He won a second term in 1904, and held office until 1909. His administration embarked on a long-running programme of reforms and major achievements. By 1900 the United States had become the world's leading industrial nation, but beneath the surface there was a great deal of unrest, caused by low wages and poor working conditions. Roosevelt broke up some of America's large monopolies and brought in strict regulations on food hygiene and child labour, limiting the hours children were allowed to work in factories. He fought abuses in the expanding railway business. He introduced the first measures for conserving US natural resources. During his presidency, he supported Panama when it broke away from Colombia, and won the right to build the Panama Canal. Roosevelt once summed up his approach to conducting foreign policy as 'speak softly and carry a big stick'. He won a Nobel peace prize for mediating in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5. His face is one of those carved on Mount Rushmore.

Who is T. R. Bear? T.R. Bear was named for President Theodore Roosevelt. President Roosevelt was in office in the early 1900's. He was a great naturalist and cared about the environment. One of his great quotes was, "We must ask ourselves if we are leaving for future generations an environment that is as good, or better, than what we found." He was actually thinking about YOU when he made a promise to preserve wildlife and habitat for its own sake and for the benefit of the American people almost one hundred years ago. "But what does all that have to do with bears?" you ask. Well, according to The Theodore Roosevelt Association Nearly 100 years ago, President Theodore Roosevelt, went on a bear hunt. He enjoyed nature and being out in the woods where animals lived. Because he was the President of the United States, the people organizing the hunt wanted to make sure the hunt was successful. But after 3 days of walking and climbing and riding, no bears were found. Now what? The President's bear hunt would be a failure! The next day the hunt guide and his hunting dogs finally found an old bear. The dogs and guide followed the bear for quite a distance until the bear was very, very tired. The dogs attacked and injured the old bear. The guides tied the bear to a tree and called for the President. Here was a bear for him to shoot!

Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace NHS is located at 28 East 20th Street, between Broadway and Park Avenue South. Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, lived at this site from his birth on October 27, 1858 until he was 14 years old. The reconstructed house contains five period rooms, two museum galleries and a bookstore. Teedie, as young Roosevelt was nicknamed, was a sickly but bright boy, from a wealthy family. To improve his health, Teedie began an exercise program at the house’s outdoor gymnasium that started a lifelong passion for the “strenuous life.” After graduating from Harvard, Roosevelt pursued his boyhood dreams, as a rancher, naturalist, explorer, author and Colonel of the Rough Riders. His political service included reforming the U.S. Civil Service Commission and New York City Police Department, and terms as Governor of New York and Vice President of the U.S. Theodore Roosevelt became president when William McKinley was assassinated in September 1901. As President, Roosevelt pushed progressive reforms, such as conservation of public lands and trust busting, and negotiated an end to the war between Russia and Japan, for which he won a Nobel Peace Prize.

The Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine 6 December 1904
To the Senate and House of Representatives: The Nation continues to enjoy noteworthy prosperity. Such prosperity is of course primarily due to the high individual average of our citizenship, taken together with our great natural resources; but an important factor therein is the working of our long-continued governmental policies. The people have emphatically expressed their approval of the principles underlying these policies, and their desire that these principles be kept substantially unchanged, although of course applied in a progressive spirit to meet changing conditions. Foreign Policy In treating of our foreign policy and of the attitude that this great Nation should assume in the world at large, it is absolutely necessary to consider the Army and the Navy, and the Congress, through which the thought of the Nation finds its expression, should keep ever vividly in mind the fundamental fact that it is impossible to treat our foreign policy, whether this policy takes shape in the effort to secure justice for others or justice for ourselves, save as conditioned upon the attitude we are willing to take toward our Army, and especially toward our Navy. It is not merely unwise, it is contemptible, for a nation, as for an individual, to use high-sounding language to proclaim its purposes, or to take positions which are ridiculous if unsupported by potential force, and then to refuse to provide this force. If there is no intention of providing and keeping the force necessary to back up a strong attitude, then it is far better not to assume such an attitude.

The Strenuous Life Theodore Roosevelt was not only a statesman but a cowboy, soldier, hunter, naturalist, and explorer. He advised everyone to lead "the strenuous life." While he was in the White House he rode horseback, played tennis, or took a rough cross-country walk daily. He often played tennis on the White House lawnhis companions became known as the "tennis cabinet." In his autobiography Roosevelt wrote that often they would make a "point to point" walk, not turning aside for anything. If their route took them through Rock Creek Park in Washington, they might have to swim Rock Creek and scale the steep walls of cliffs. They swam the creek in their clothes when ice was floating thick in it. A Devoted Father He entertained his 6 children and their many cousins and friends with equal energy. Their home, named Sagamore Hill, in Oyster Bay, Long Island, was a happy place for childrenthere were picnics and overnight camping trips, swimming and rowing in the Sound, and wonderful Christmas and Fourth of July celebrations. He was not always in favor with the mothers, however, because he let the children go swimming with their clothes on and he took them on hikes from which they returned dirty and ragged. He was never too busy to have breakfast with the children or for a story before they went to bed.

He anointed William Howard Taft, his close friend and Secretary of War as his successor. Taft easily won the election defeating William Jennings Bryan in his third and final attempt to gain the Oval Office. Immediately following Taft's inauguration in 1909, T.R. set out for Africa to hunt big game and collect specimens for the Smithsonian Institution. His decision was based on his desire to leave the political stage to his successor and on his natural need for action.

The following year he was elected to the New York State legislature (1882-84) where he developed a reputation as an honest politician opposed to corrupt, party-machine politics.
In 1895 Roosevelt was appointed president of New York City Board of Police Commissioners. In 1897 Roosevelt became Assistant Secretary of the Navy and with Leonard Wood organized the Rough Riders, a volunteer cavalry unit that took part in the Spanish-American War. and Paul Jones Theodore Roosevelt is best known in Seacoast, NH as the peacemaker who orchestrated the famous Treaty of Portsmouth in 1905. The treaty brought together the warring nations of Russia and Japan, a conflict that many feared would escalate into a world war. Roosevelt was also, when he chose to be, a war maker. His 1898 charge up San Juan Hill in Cuba with the "Rough Riders" (plus his own film crew) turned the six-week Spanish American War into a public relations victory for the media-savvy politician. Roosevelt had jumped at the chance to fund an archeological search for the body of John Paul Jones and appropriated funds in 1905. Roosevelt saw himself as the fulfillment of Jones' Revolutionary War call for an organized American navy and he had no guilt about using the exhumed mummified body of Jones to woo the public and legislators to his vision of a giant naval fleet. Indeed, in the following speech, he implies that any one who thinks otherwise is not fit to attend the funeral of the "Father of the American Navy." With his plans to create a great fleet begun and the building of the Panama Canal underway, Roosevelt was in top form at the time of this speech. Unafraid , even enamored of war, Roosevelt was not unlike the driven, energetic John Paul Jones. Both were self-possessed and outwardly self-assured, yet private, contemplative, even lonely figures. Both adored poetry, wrote extensively, loved to dress in the finest military outfits, were extremely image conscious and highly moralistic.
