He held various offices in New York before becoming Vice President to William McKinley, and when McKinley was assassinated on September 6, 1901 TR became the youngest man ever to assume the presidency. He overcame a sickly childhood by developing a love of the outdoors, which lasted throughout his life and set a precedent for the nation’s environmental policies during his years in the White House. Under his direction, the U. S. Forest Service was established in 1905, and over 200 million acres of land were placed under federal protection. The dogs attacked and injured the old bear. The guides tied the bear to a tree and called for the President. Here was a bear for him to shoot! President Roosevelt looked at the poor old bear and said "no!" No one would shoot this old bear for sport. That would not be right. However, the bear was injured and suffering.
