The story of the Teddy Bear . . . Many of us have loved a teddy bea r. Maybe
we've even had more than one very special "teddy" in our lives. Here is the real story of how the teddy bear sprang into our hearts. Nearly 100 years ago, President Theodore Roosevelt, went on a bear hunt. He enjoyed nature and being out in the woods where animals lived. Because he was the President of the United States, the people organizing the hunt wanted to make sure the hunt was successful. But after 3 days of walking and climbing and riding, no bears were found. Now what? The President's bear hunt would be a failure! The next day the hunt guide and his hunting dogs finally found an old bear. The dogs and guide followed the bear for quite a distance until the bear was very, very tired. The dogs attacked and injured the old bear. The guides tied the bear to a tree and called for the President. Here was a bear for him to shoot! President Roosevelt looked at the poor old bear and said "no!" No one would shoot this old bear for sport. That would not be right.

T.R. on the Grand Canyon Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt was the colorful and dynamic personality who dominated the American political landscape from 1900 until World War I. He became the 26th president of the United States following the assassination of William McKinley in 1901. Roosevelt was the first conservationist President. He established the National Wildlife Refuge program, and was largely responsible for establishment of federal control and regulation over public lands of the West. He created many desert national parks and monuments, including Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, Montezuma's Castle and Petrified Forest.
Early Years
Born into a wealthy New York City family on October 27, 1858, Roosevelt grew up a sickly child, suffering from asthma and bad eyesight. But as a young man, he devoted himself to vigorous exercise, gaining a physical stamina and love of outdoor sports that became a hallmark of his character. His promotion of the "strenuous life" was his lifelong preoccupation. He also developed an early interest in nature and animals. As this keen interest increased, he collected thousands of specimens for museums and scientific study. He was considered one of the leading field biologists of his day and was the author of many books and articles on natural history.

Bush provides the intro to this two-part look at one of America's most beloved presidents, with Richard Dreyfuss as the voice of Theodore Roosevelt. We see a young TR overcome debilitating asthma through a strict regimen of athletic training, witness his Western adventures, rise as New York City Police Commissioner, heroics in the Spanish-American War, and selection as Vice President. With the assassination of President McKinley, 42-year-old TR became the youngest U.S. President. (Part 2:) As president, Teddy Roosevelt tested and extended the limits of the White House like no other before him or since. On the homefront, he battled captains of industry and their corporate trusts, brought labor disputes to an end, and protected the environment. On the world stage, he was determined to make America a dominant power, and his efforts to mediate peace between Russia and Japan would win him the Nobel Peace Prize." Teddy Roosevelt With limitless energy and a passionate sense of the nation, he set the stage for the American century BY EDMUND MORRIS hey don't hold White House lunches the way they used to at the beginning of the century. On Jan. 1, 1907, for example, the guest list was as follows: a Nobel prizewinner, a physical culturalist, a naval historian, a biographer, an essayist, a paleontologist, a taxidermist, an ornithologist, a field naturalist, a conservationist, a big-game hunter, an editor, a critic, a ranchman, an orator, a country squire, a civil service reformer, a socialite, a patron of the arts, a colonel of the cavalry, a former Governor of New York, the ranking expert on big-game mammals in North America and the President of the U.S. All these men were named Theodore Roosevelt. In his protean variety, his febrile energy (which could have come from his lifelong habit of popping nitroglycerin pills for a dicey heart), his incessant self-celebration and his absolute refusal to believe there was anything finer than to be born an American, unless to die as one in some glorious battle for the flag, the great "Teddy" was as representative of 20th century dynamism as Abraham Lincoln had been of 19th century union and George Washington of 18th century independence. President Theodore Roosevelt was honored with the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1906. He was the first American to receive any Nobel Prize. , I hear you ask. It seems so hypocritical. After all, he eagerly, even joyfully resigned his position as Assistant Secretary of the Navy in order to fight in the Spanish American War! That War had been deliberately provoked by the United States in order to drive the Spanish from Cuba. Roosevelt was well aware of that fact. The United States did very well from that War, acquiring the Philippines, the islands of Guam, Wake, and Puerto Rico as well as a protectorate over Cuba. It also inherited the headaches of the Imperial conqueror. The Philippines insurrection following the conclusion of the Spanish American War was one of them. It had to be put down by the successors to the Spanish oppressors, the Americans, with a great deal of bloodshed. Theodore Roosevelt was Vice President of the United States when this was occurring. He inherited the problem when he became President in 1901. So, with a reputation like his why would anyone want to honor him as a
