Guide Picks - Top 10 Books: The Holy Roman Empire Depending on your definition, the Holy Roman Empire lasted over either seven hundred or a thousand years. Throughout this period the geographical borders constantly changed, and so did the institution's role: sometimes it dominated Europe, sometimes Europe dominated it. These are my top books on the subject. The Holy Roman Empire 1495 - 1806 by Peter H. Wilson
In this slim, but affordable, volume, Wilson explores the broad nature of the Holy Roman Empire and the changes that occurred within it, while avoiding unnecessary, perhaps even unfair, comparisons to 'successful' monarchies and the later German state. In doing so, the author has produced an excellent overview of the subject. Early Modern Germany 1477 - 1806 by Michael Hughes In this book Hughes covers the major events of the period through a chronology, whilst also discussing the possibility and nature of a 'German' culture and identity within the Holy Roman Empire. The book is suitable for general readers and students, especially as the text notes previous historical orthodoxy. The volume also has a nice reading list, but too few maps.

Germany and Prussia Until 1806 the Holy Roman Empire dominated central Europe. Ruled by the Habsburgs, whose power was concentrated in Austria, the Empire was a collection of several hundred independent states. The power balance shifted as Prussia rose out of the Brandenburg march, until a Prussian led German Empire was created. This lasted until the aftermath of The Great War, when the Weimar Republic was founded. General Histories

    • Introduction
This regional page describes the Habsburg Empire as it existed from 1814-1918. The Empire was called the Austrian Empire starting in 1814 and the Austro-Hungarian Empire after 1867. The non-Hungarian half of the dual monarchy did not, in effect, have its own name and was officially referred to as the "kingdoms and crownlands represented in the imperial parliament." In popular parlance, this half of the empire came to be known as Austria, or Cis-Leithania , meaning the lands on "this side" (from the perspective of Vienna) of the Leitha River which formed part of the boundary of Austria and Hungary. Researchers of ancestors who lived in the Empire may also wish to visit our regional page for the state of Austria which at its capital Vienna maintains an enormous number of the Empire's records.

ROMAN FOMIN: END OF VLADIMIR GUSINSKY’S EMPIRE. MEDIA-MOST HOLDING LIQUIDATED
The general meeting of shareholders of the Joint Stock Company Media-Most decided to liquidate the company today. Besides, the meeting also determined the procedure to convey the shares of 24 companies which remained at Media-Most, the shares are going to be handed over to Gazprom-Media.
The shareholders appointed the members of the liquidation commission with Vladimir Shishmolkin at the head. Spokesmen for Gazprom-Media (who own 14.3% of shares of Media-Most besides NTV) did not show up at the meeting. Thus there has been a line drawn in the story of Media-Most’s collapse. The owner of the media holding, Vladimir Gusinsky actually lost his influence on the Russian policy on April 3 of the current year when the special meeting of NTV’s shareholders elected the new staff of Board of Directors with Boris Jordan at the head.
The suit on liquidation of Media-Most was filed in the beginning of the current year by the fiscal police of Moscow’s Central district. But the lawyers of the holding managed to delay the decision, it was made several times but then cancelled by the district and arbitration courts of Moscow. Now when the control stock of shares is in the hands of the Russian gas giant Gazprom, the existence of the company with multimillion debts does not have any point. Besides, the shareholders of Media-Most (Vladimir Gusinsky, the owner, is implied here) lost the control over the editorial policy of mass media.

The Romans preserved much of the Greek culture and blended it with their own traditions to give us the Classical ideal. Their military conquests brought an empire to Rome that even surpassed that of Alexander the Great. For nearly a thousand years all roads led to Rome. From a small village on the Tiber River to the greatest Empire (Maps) the world had ever known, Rome left a rich heritage for all who followed. Back to Top

    Introduction
The Holy Roman Empire (official name: sacrum romanum imperium, more details below ) designates a political entity that covered a large portion of Europe, centered on Germany, from 962 to 1806.
    Origin and Evolution
The Holy Roman Empire originates in the eastern half of Charlemagne's empire, divided after his death. In 800, Charlemagne had received from the pope the title of Emperor ( Imperator Augustus ), reminiscent of the title held by Roman emperors, both in the Rome of old and in the Byzantium of the time. By 911 eastern and western Franconia, as the area was known, had completely separated, the latter continuing as the kingdom of the Franks, or France; the latter continuing as the kingdom of Germany. In 962 Otto I the Great reclaimed the imperial dignity which had lost all prestige and was conferred by popes on bit players in Italian politics. This is usually taken to be the founding date of the Holy Roman Empire. The Holy Roman Empire ( HRE ) never achieved the political unification that France did; a prolonged attempt at centralizing authority starting with Maximilian I (1493-1519) was wrecked by the Reformation and the ensuing wars, culminating with the Thirty Years War (1618-48) and the Treaty of Westphalia (1648). The latter formalized the relationship between the Emperor and his vassals, who thereby achieved all but complete sovereignty. As a result, the HRE was still composed at the end of the 18th century of around 360 distinct entities, differing widely in size, rank and power. Some were kings and princes, other were counts; some were clerics, other were secular rulers.
