The farmer Our Ephesian farmer would watch the procession with approval. His son, after all, is marching as one of the ephebes accompanying the statues with all due reverence. That statement automatically suggests certain things. Our farmer is a citizen of Ephesus and a wealthy man, with widespread landholdings in the city's hinterland and, indeed, in other parts of the province of Asia. The farmer is actually something of an absentee landlord, for he dwells in the city itself and leaves the running of his estates to bailiffs and slaves.
Living in the city would be vital for such a man, for that, after all, was where "the action" was. Increasingly under Roman rule, the wealthy and socially powerful came to dominate the political life of Greek cities. These elite families actually carried much of the burden of running the empire, which was, to our eyes, woefully understaffed; it has been estimated, for example, that there was only one imperial official for every 350,000-400,000 provincial inhabitants. Whether that number is completely accurate or not, it is of the right order of magnitude. The central authorities in Rome thus relied on important local families to maintain order in the cities and to oversee tax collection, and they rewarded well those who cooperated.
