ZEUGMA Update (15.5.00) There has been a tragedy and a second is in progress. Location of Zeugma - Samosata lies 75 km away to the north-east. More important, the flood waters were lapping over the fields beneath which lay the remains of the ancient city of Samosata. The city had been the capital of allied kings of the Roman Empire one of whom, Antiochus IV, was described as a man "who had inherited great wealth and was the richest client-king of all" (Tacitus Hist 2.81.1). In the first century AD, the kingdom was annexed by Rome to the province of Syria, the city flourished as a frontier town of the Roman Empire, and an entire legion of 5000 soldiers was placed there. Written sources provided occasional insights at various points during its subsequent history but the flesh for these bones was to be found within the town wall circuit of 5 km enclosing some 250 ha/ 600 acres, and beyond it in the remains of the ancient villages, farms, aqueducts, quarries and roads of its hinterland. A number of Turkish and foreign teams did carry out surveys and excavations, but for so large an area it was modest. None of the foreign institutes undertook any major project at Samosata itself which was left to the valiant but limited resources of Turkish archaeologists. Today it is all under a deep and vast lake - readers might look at the superb aerial view by Ed Kashi of the lake where once it stood (

Costume Goddess Roman Empire Tour:
Athens, Greece
The Temple of Olympian Zeus If Athens deserved its widely broadcast reputation as a dirty, congested, dangerous, overpriced mega-tropolis, we couldn't see much evidence for it. We loved Athens!
One month after 9/11, it was clear that the Greeks were hurting from the lack of American tourists. Restaurant owners, merchants, and travel agents were literally standing outside their establishments and urging us inside. Thus we allowed one agency, five minutes after we got off the train, to set up a hotel stay for us, although we thought we could find one on our own. We declined their suggestions for island-hopping cruises, since we only had three days to spend on a island and wanted to stay in one place. View from the Hotel
The modest hotel was near the train station, a pleasant non-touristed neighborhood. We surveyed the oh-so-breathtaking view from the 5th floor: the backside of apartment buildings, tons of laundry hung out on balconies hundreds of TV antennas sticking up. Then we turned our eyes to the left and there it was:

It was organized by the Museum at the Friends of Science Society of the Poznañ region. Later exhibitions were arranged both by Polish and German institutions, and after the independence in 1918 the role of the organizer was taken over by the Wielkopolskie Museum, from which, following the Second World War, Prehistoric Museum (now: Archaeological Museum) split off as a separate entity. The present Exhibition is yet another permanent display showing the prehistory of Wielkopolska from the beginnings of human settlement until the close of the Ancient period. Today we know that in its investigation of human prehistory archaeology bases overwhelmingly on the remains of material culture and is unable to reconstruct the life of past societies in all its aspects. Still, the abundance of archaeological artefacts in Wielkopolska allows us to gain a fairly extensive knowledge about the region`s past and to demonstrate its prehistory at the Exhibition. The authors of the programme concentrated their efforts on presenting the cultural framework in which archeological artefacts existed and, consequently, their function.

The Oxford Illustrated Prehistory of Europe Edited by BARRY CUNLIFFE When a melting Swiss glacier recently revealed the body of a hunter millenia old, the world sat up and took notice. Here, in his well-preserved arrows, tools, and leather garments (not to mention his own remains) was a rare glimpse of life in prehistoric Europe, and it captured the public imagination. Elsewhere more obvious remnants of the pre-classical past have long been objects of fascination: the megaliths of northwestern Europe, the palaces of Crete, the mysterious cave paintings of France. Now archeologist Barry Cunliffe and a team of distinguished experts shed light on this astonishing, long-silent world in a comprehensive and lavishly illustrated account. Ranging from the earliest settlements through the emergence of Minoan civilization to the barbarian world at the end of the Roman Empire, The Oxford Illustrated Prehistory of Europe provides a fascinating look at how successive cultures adapted to the landscape of Europe. In synthesizing the diverse findings of archeology, the authors capture the sweeping movements of peoples, the spread of agriculture, the growth of metal working, and the rise and fall of cultures. They provide intriguing insight on the Minoan and the Mycenean past underlying classical Greek history, and on the disasters that destroyed Minoan civilization. They explore the increasingly sophisticated societies of northern Europe, revealing surprisingly far-reaching trade between different areas. The peoples of Bronze Age Denmark, for instance, sent amber to Germany in return for scarce metal, while new technologies spread widely across the continent. The book continues through the end of the Roman Empire, exploring the barbarian world beyond Rome's northern frontier.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Few slick, made-for-television mini-series hold a candle to the intense drama of real history. That's what Ancient Mysteries ' viewers will discover when a North Carolina State University history professor helps recreate the story of "Rome's Lost Legions" on the A&E Network at 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 12. The episode is hosted by Leonard Nimoy. Dr. S. Thomas Parker, whose research on the frontiers of the Roman Empire is internationally respected, will trace the last days of the battle in the Teutoburg Forest of Germany, where three Roman legions were wiped out in 9 A.D. Parker said, "The outcome of this battle has enormous historical importance. With the loss of their legions, Rome gave up the hope of conquering Germany and pulled back across the Rhine River. The Rhine became a permanent cultural dividing line between east and west in Europe." Parker said the exact location of the battlefield had been under scholarly dispute until recently when an amateur German archeologist, using a high-tech metal detector, found a concentration of metal objects just under the mantle of earth in the forest. Excavations revealed a trove of Roman coins dating up to 9 A.D. Further digs produced other artifacts associated with
