The Area of Study
Ancient History is continually reshaped and re-interpreted through the discoveries made in ongoing archaeological excavations of ancient sites and manuscript research. Ancient History is a dynamic study which continues to provide new knowledge and perspectives of the antecedents of western civilisation in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Levant and the Graeco-Roman world. Students in Ancient History may focus on the study of ancient languages through documentary texts in Egyptian hieroglyphics, Greek, Latin and Biblical Hebrew. Units on archaeological methods and research provide links to teams working on excavations in Egypt, Israel, and, on occasion, Greece. Other areas of study include Greek history from Homer to the Hellenistic cultures under the Roman Empire including Judaism and early Christianity, Roman history from the Republic to the Late Empire and Byzantine period; and Egyptian history from the Predynastic period up to the Ramesside era, while Egypt's later history merges with the Greek and Roman streams. Units on society and cultures, myth, drama, religious traditions, women and sport in the ancient world are also available. The Department of Ancient History offers the following specialisations for the BA degree: Ancient History (General), Egyptology, Greek History, Roman History, Early Christianity/Late Roman Empire, and the BA in Ancient History (an advanced program which requires a higher UAI than the other specialisations).

    ENCYCLOPEDIA
Ancient History, Late Roman And Byzantine Byzantine Empire Related Category: Ancient History, Late Roman And Byzantine Byzantine Empire, successor state to the Roman Empire (see under Rome ), also called Eastern Empire and East Roman Empire. It was named after Byzantium, which Emperor Constantine I rebuilt ( A.D. 330) as Constantinople and made the capital of the entire Roman Empire. Although not foreseen at the time, a division into Eastern and Western empires became permanent after the accession (395) of Honorius in the West and Arcadius in the East. Throughout its existence the Byzantine Empire was subject to important changes in its boundaries. The core of the empire consisted of the Balkan Peninsula (i.e., Thrace, Macedonia, Epirus, Greece proper, the Greek isles, and Illyria) and of Asia Minor (present-day Turkey). The empire combined Roman political tradition, Hellenic culture, and Christian beliefs. Greek was the prevalent language, but Latin long continued in official use. See the table entitled Rulers of the Byzantine Empire for a list of all the Byzantine emperors and the years they reigned.

    Roman Empire
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Roman Empire , successor of the Roman Republic , controlled the Mediterranean world and much of Northern Europe after 31 B.C. The last Roman emperor in the western half of the empire was deposed in . The eastern part of the empire continued without interruption, but with gradually shrinking territory, until when Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Turks (See Byzantine Empire ). Successor states in the west (the Frankish kingdom and the Holy Roman Empire ) and the east (the Russian czars) used titles adopted from Roman practices well into the modern period. The Roman Empire's influence on government, law, architecture, and many other aspects of life remains inescapable.

Volume 14 , Late Antiquity: Empire and Successors, AD 425–600
Edited by Averil Cameron, Bryan Ward-Perkins, Michael Whitby
In stock With Volume XIV The Cambridge Ancient History concludes its story. This latest volume embraces the wide range of approaches and scholarship which have in recent decades transformed our view of Late Antiquity. In particular, traditional political and social history has been enormously enhanced by integrating the rich evidence of Christian writing, and the constantly expanding results of archaeological research. A picture emerges of a period of considerable military and political disruption, but also of vibrant intellectual and cultural activity. The volume begins with a series of narrative chapters. These are followed by sections on government and institutions, economy and society, and religion and culture. A section on the provinces and the non-Roman world marks the rise of new and distinct political and cultural entities. This volume, and the CAH, ends in around AD 600, before the Arab conquests shattered for ever what remained of the unity of the Roman world.

    Volume 11 , The High Empire, A.D. 70-192 2nd Edition
Edited by Alan K. Bowman, Peter Garnsey, Dominic Rathbone
In stock Volume XI of the second edition of The Cambridge Ancient History covers the history of the Roman empire in the period from AD 70 to 192, from Vespasian to the Antonines. The volume begins with the political and military history of the period. Developments in the structure of the empire are then examined, including the organisation and personnel of the central government and province-based institutions and practices. A series of provincial studies follows, and the society, economy and culture of the empire as a whole are reviewed in a group of thematic chapters. This edition is entirely rewritten from the 1936 edition. There is much more extensive discussion of social, economic and cultural issues, reflecting trends in modern scholarship, and the increase of archaeological evidence and development of new approaches to it. New documentary evidence, from texts on stone, wood and papyrus, has advanced knowledge in every chapter.
    Reviews
‘… an enormous enterprise, into which immense academic energy has been poured … The volume thus offers a vast panorama survey of many aspects of the period … conspicuously strong in examining the history of the various separate regions of the Empire … volume XI is perhaps the most successful of all the Roman volumes in CAH2 published so far … excellent sections in government and the working of the Imperial system, with a notably original contribution by Brent Shaw on ‘Rebel and Outsiders.’ English Historical Review

JACT Ancient History A Level: the new specification
    Robin Osborne
The JACT Ancient History Committee has been working on revisions to the existing JACT Ancient History A Level Syllabus for the past four years. Successive revisions have had themselves to be revised as Government requirements have changed. Under the rules as finally settled, all A levels will be made up of two parts, AS and A2. In each subject the A level examination is required to consist of six equal units, three examined at AS and three at A2. The A2 units will examined at the end of Year 13; the AS Units may be examined either at at the end of Year 12 or at the end of Year 13, or both, at the candidate's discretion. The JACT Ancient History Committee has taken advantage of these new constraints to construct a syllabus which maintains the traditional emphasis on encouraging A level Ancient History students to grapple directly with ancient sources of high quality, but which provides much more precise guidance than has been given in the past about what students are expected to study. The syllabus, which will be the only Ancient History A Level syllabus on offer nationally, covers most of the same ground as is covered by the current JACT syllabus, but the material will be examined in different ways, with more explicit emphasis on the understanding of specified ancient texts (particularly in Units 1 and 4 which will be examined by questions on extracts from ancient sources) and on the understanding of change over a lengthy period of time (particularly in Unit 3 at AS and Unit 6 at A2). A new set of papers on Late Antiquity has been added to the syllabus.
