For 13 years, members of the California Outdoor Rollerskating Association have been strapping on their skates in the Skate Against Violence Roadskate. This is a 450 mile skate-a-thon from Los Angeles to San Francisco. The roadskate is a rolling anti-violence publicity campaign designed to strongly raise awareness of the positive aspects inline skating can bring to the lives of youth and adults to give young people a fun, healthy alternative they can enjoy. This may not end hate or violence in the street, but it can have an enormous impact in the minds of young people who will benefit from the social interaction and the physical conditioning skating will bring into their lives. The skate-a-thon kicks off the Skate Against Violence Campaign.
This year we want to use our skate-a-thon to help boost San Francisco's image as the City prepares to be chosen as the site of the 2012 Olympic Games. We plan to work with Ann Cribbs and BASOC to help whip up an atmosphere of Olympic excitement by skating from Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Bakersfield, Visalia, Fresno, San Jose and end in San Francisco with an Olympic torch or Olympic flag from October 14 to 17. We also want to boost the image of inline and roller skating as we feel these sports should be included as Olympic sports.

Sports Roll On
This week's standards: Students understand that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and social interaction. Students apply movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills. (Physical education) Activities: 1. Design and draw a picture of your perfect skate. What is the shape of your skate? What color would it be? How would you decorate it? 2. What events in skating history encouraged people to roller-skate? What discouraged them? Take a survey among your friends. How many like to roller-skate? What do they like about skating? 3. Look at the sports section of your newspaper. Draw a red circle around any story or box score about roller-skating events. Draw a blue circle around any sports you think could be done on roller skates. 4. Write a letter to the International Olympic Committee encouraging them to make roller skating an Olympic sport. Be sure to include at least three reasons to support your position. 5. Use reference books, fitness magazines or the Internet to learn more about how to train to be a good roller skater. Find exercises and activities that will help you develop your legs and back, and your endurance and lung power.
