Title - Rhyming words By - Debbie Haren Primary Subject - Language Arts Secondary Subjects - Grade Level - 2-4 Materials: ball Procedure: Use the ball to pass it back and forth. First, have the child say a word and then pass the ball. Then the teacher or other person says a word that rhymes with that word. As they get a hang on it the teacher wants to think of a word and then pass the ball. Before the child passes the ball back the child needs to think of a word that rhymes with that word. For younger children it can be a nonsense word. This is just a way for them to start thinking of words and they can rhyme. For older children: Have them say a word to each other then the student passes the ball back but first has to think of a word that rhymes. You can even put a time limit on how long they have to respond. The ball can kept being passed back and forth and keep rhyming until none can think of any other words to rhyme with it. The last person to rhyme with the word wins! Extension: The teacher could also do this with synonyms. Start with a word and they keep passing the ball until no one can think of any more synonyms.
