Learning Network
As key component of the Comm unity Schools-RI Initiative we are supporting a "Learning Network" to facilitate the sharing of good ideas, effective strategies, and "lessons learned" and to provide mutual support within the field of community school/out of school time programs. Staff from schools and youth/family serving organizations in our primary target communities include: Central Falls, Newport - Thompson Middle School, Pawtucket - Goff Jr. High School, Providence - Gilbert Stuart Middle School, West Warwick - Deering Middle School, and Woonsocket Middle School. There are overlapping initiatives/special projects in most of these communities (e.g. COZ, 21st Century Community Learning Centers, Comprehensive Strategies to Reduce Juvenile Delinquency) and thus we hope to include learning opportunities that help to integrate and connect the work being done. Whenever possible, learning opportunities will be open to other interested schools/community based organizations in the state.

The Lifespan/Tufts/Brown Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) is a joint research effort between Tufts and Brown Universities and their affiliated hospitals and centers. The CFAR is part of a national program begun by the National Institutes of Health in 1988. There are currently 19 Centers for AIDS Research (CFARs) located at academic medical centers throughout the U.S. The Lifespan/Tufts/Brown CFAR has brought together all senior AIDS investigators at the Tufts and Brown Universities and their affiliated hospitals in a user-friendly structure which has been successful in supporting on-going research among active AIDS investigators and in stimulating new AIDS research by young investigators and by others who had not previously been involved in this research area. Besides the extensive efforts in Southeastern New England, the leadership has expanded the scope of international studies through the training of international collaborators and collaborative research at international sites. CFAR Core Services are available to support HIV/AIDS research to all Tufts University and Brown University faculty members who hold the rank of assistant professor of greater. The full range of research disciplines including behavioral science, basic science, clinical research and prevention science are supported by the CFAR. The collaborating institutions include the Brown Medical School in Providence, Rhode Island and three affiliated hospitals, (The Miriam Hospital, Rhode Island Hospital and Roger Williams Medical Center), and the Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts, with its primary teaching hospital, the New England Medical Center (NEMC). The Miriam Hospital in Providence serves as the primary contracting institution for the project. All CFAR members are faculty members at either Brown Medical School or Tufts University.

Health Director Recognized for Work with School-Based Health Centers
Rhode Island's Director of Health has received national recognition from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for her encouragement and support of school-based health centers. The Foundation lauded Patricia A. Nolan, MD, MPH, for her leadership in establishing school-based health centers in Rhode Island and in Colorado where she was previously Director of Health. The Foundation announced seven of the national awards; Dr. Nolan is the only state health director recognized. "This recognition honors the work of the whole Department of Health on this important issue. The Robert Woods Johnson Foundation Award four years ago gave us a wonderful opportunity to increase the number of our school-based health centers from three to seven. If I could wave a magic wand, I would start a planning process for a school-based health center in every high school, and require each community health center, organized ambulatory care facility and hospital to be a part of one or more planning groups," Dr. Nolan said.

The health of young people, and the adults they will become, is critically linked to the health-related behaviors they adopt. Certain behaviors that are often established during youth contribute markedly to today’s major killers, such as heart disease, cancer, and injuries. These behaviors include tobacco use; unhealthy dietary habits; inadequate physical activity; alcohol and other drug use; sexual behaviors that can result in HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases, and unintended pregnancies; and behaviors that result in violence and unintentional injuries (e.g., driving while intoxicated). These behaviors place young people at increased risk for serious health problems, both now and in the future.
Young People Are at Risk Every day, nearly 3,000 young people take up daily smoking.
