Adult Education Teacher Inquiry Projects have been supported in Rhode Island through funding obtained through Section 353, Special Projects/Professional Development, of the National Literacy Act of 1991. A first round of projects was undertaken in the spring of 1996, followed by a second round the following spring. Practitioners throughout the state are invited to submit questions they wish to explore during each round of the inquiry process; and at the end of each cycle come together to share their findings. They participate in an orientation session at the beginning of each round of inquiry, during which information about practitioner-based inquiry is shared, suggestions made and guidance given towards the development of their projects. Governor Carcieri (center) talks with GTech President and CEO Bruce Turner (left) and House Speaker William Murphy (right) after signing the agreement to keep GTech in Rhode Island. The agreement was announced at 5:00pm on Wednesday afternoon. April 9, 2003 Governor Carcieri is working to create more and better jobs for all Rhode Islanders, using three guiding principles. 1 - Turn ideas into jobs.
This means using limited state support to grow new businesses through such efforts as the Slater Centers for Excellence, where seasoned business professionals mentor entrepreneurs who have good ideas. In the new budget for fiscal year 2004 the Governor proposes to double the investment in the Slater Centers from $2.5 million to $5 million to spur additional development. In addition, the budget calls for increased support for research at the University of Rhode Island. This state ranks last in the nation for public college and university spending on research and development. The proposed URI Center for Biotechnology and Molecular Biosciences will be available to students from all state-run institutions of higher education (or businesses seeking employee training), preparing them for careers in these growing industries. Companion bills before the legislature will allow public university researchers here, like those in other states, to benefit from the profits their work makes possible.

http://www.ri.net/RIDE/health/teachinghealth.html
TEACHING AND LEARNING HEALTH The preceding section of this Health Education Framework presented seven standards and related student performance descriptions which reflect what all children are expected to know and be able to do. They specify levels of learning far beyond what we have come to regard as acceptable to date. Those higher levels can be achieved only by changing the conditions that determine how well students learn, especially curriculum, instruction, assessment and professional development. CONTENT IN CURRICULUM DESIGN If the standards spell out our expectations as to what we want our children to know and be able to do in health education, then the content is the "what" we want them to know about. Ten nationally accepted health content areas are: 1. Personal health 6. Environmental health 2. Mental and emotional health 7. Disease control and prevention 3. Injury prevention and safety 8. Substance use and abuse 4. Nutrition 9. Consumer health 5. Family life 10.Personal health Additionally, research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shown that there are six health-related risk behaviors about which students need to be more knowledgeable. They are:
  • Unintentional (motor vehicle-related, fires, drowning) and intentional injuries (interpersonal violence including domestic and child abuse, bullying and fighting, homicide, and suicide);

    Annenberg Institute Executive Director Warren Simmons was named to Rhode Island Governor Don Carcieri's Education Transition Team. Director of Opportunity and Accountability Dennie Palmer Wolf participated in the Policy Subcommittee, which has alerted the new governor to the most pressing issues of public education in Rhode Island, particularly issues that will come up early in his administration: compliance with NCLB and diversifying the kinds of schools available to the state's residents.

    14 May, 1997 Bulletin #9 Dear Colleagues, This bulletin contains an update about the National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy's research work, as well as several reminders and updated information about summer plans. At present, the big push is on for ADULT EDUCATION DAY , May 22nd, at the State House. This is a day to celebrate and recognize the importance of adult education throughout the state. Learners will speak, Miss America will be on hand to speak as well, and various activities and displays are planned for the day. Any program can set up a display, but must bring all its own tables/set up materials. Displays can be set up on Wednesday, (5/21) between 1 and 2PM; agencies can then staff those display areas for the afternoon and then return on Thursday to staff their areas during Adult Education Day itself. For more information, and contact LR/RI or Louise Moulton at 455-8041. Janet Isserlis NOTICES Practitioner Dissemination and Research Networ k a message from David Hayes Dear Practitioners: The National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy (NCSALL) is establishing a Practitioner Dissemination and Research Network (PDRN) in an effort to create a systematic partnership between practitioners and researchers. It is NCSALL's hope that the network will strengthen the connections between adult literacy research and practice through: linking practitioners and academics who are both conducting research; generating input from the field into current research, and disseminating NCSALL's research results in a timely manner.

    The TLC received supplemental funds to research effective job-embedded professional development practices and design a training and support system for Rhode Island educators implementing those practices. We are focusing our efforts on action research (see related article on the CELSI initiative) and lesson study. During the summer of 2002, the I-Plan fellows and the executive director of the TLC will work on a lesson study training and support program and a related tool kit for trainers to use as they train groups of teachers to conduct lesson study. Beginning in the fall, therefore, we will have the capacity to train and support educators in a variety of contexts to conduct lesson study.
    In order to maximize effectiveness, we are currently working to form partnerships with higher education, teacher organizations, and technology initiatives to design and implement the program. More details will be forthcoming.
