(Portrait) Covert action gained a new urgency under President Ronald Reagan and his Director of Central Intelligence William Casey. The United States met the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan with aid to the Afghan mujahidin . Reagan also directed CIA to support the anti-Communist Contras fighting the Sandinista regime in Nicaragua. In December 1981, Reagan issued Executive Order 12333, which gave CIA the exclusive right to conduct covert action unless the President decided that another agency would be more appropriate to attain a specific objective. During Reagan's second term, CIA expanded its headquarters complex in Northern Virginia. Like President Eisenhower did for the original building, President Reagan helped break ground for the addition in 1984.
"IT IS NOT ENOUGH, OF COURSE, simply to collect information. Thoughtful analysis is vital to sound decisionmaking. The goal of our intelligence analysts can be nothing short of the truth, even when that truth is unpleasant or unpopular. I have asked for honest, objective analysis, and I shall expect nothing less. When there is disagreement, as there often is, on the difficult questions of our time, I expect those honest differences of view to be fully expressed." President Ronald Reagan

In honor of the greatest president of this century, we proudly present the award winning Ronald Reagan Home Page! In the spirit of "Winning one for the Gipper" we bring you the truth about the Reagan Era. This home page is dedicated to the winning of Cold War and the resulting freedom for hundreds of millions of people, the revival of the American Spirit from a point of near-surrender to one of unparalleled greatness and the Reagan Era expansion, one that would grow to become the greatest peace-time expansion in U.S. history. A time in which every income quintile saw gains in overall wealth and income, a time in which the middle class gained the most and our economy grew by a third. Since President Reagan's economic programs were first enacted in late 1981 we've had only three years worth of recession (including the recession those programs brought us out of) and 20 years of expansion! First the Reagan Era expansion and then the Bush-Clinton expansion become records for duration. The current Bush expansion, entering its second years, has also been spurred with the help of tax cuts. Our unparalleled economic success is due in no small part to the fact that the United States continues to follow economic policies largely in line with those Reagan first put forward during his 1980 campaign. Even with Clinton's flawed attempts to bring back the Era of Big Government with higher taxes and more regulations, the Republican gains in Congress in 1994 put us back on track with lower deficits, continued lowering of interest rates and lower taxes.

REAGAN, RONALD U.S. Actor/Politician Ronald Reagan lived in the public eye for more than fifty years as an actor and politician. He appeared in 53 Hollywood movies, from Love is on the Air (1937) to The Killers (1964). Never highly touted as an actor, his most acclaimed movie was King's Row (1942) while his favorite role was as George Gipp in Knute RockneAll American (1940). He served as president of the Screen Actor's Guild from 1947 to 1952 and again in 1959 where he led the fight against communist infiltration in the film industry and brokered residual rights for actors. Reagan made his debut on television 7 December 1950 as a detective on the CBS Airflyte Theater adaptation of an Agatha Christie novel. After a dozen appearances over the next four years on various shows, Reagan's big television break came when Taft Schreiber of MCA acquainted him with G.E. Theater.

President Reagan's Speech on The Challenger Disaster
Ronald Reagan Oval Office of the White House, January 28, 1986 Nineteen years ago, almost to the day, we lost three astronauts in a terrible accident on the ground. But, we've never lost an astronaut in flight; we've never had a tragedy like this. And perhaps we've forgotten the courage it took for the crew of the shuttle; but they, the Challenger Seven, were aware of the dangers, but overcame them and did their jobs brilliantly. We mourn seven heroes: Michael Smith, Dick Scobee, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Gregory Jarvis, and Christa McAuliffe. We mourn their loss as a nation together. For the families of the seven, we cannot bear, as you do, the full impact of this tragedy. But we feel the loss, and we're thinking about you so very much. Your loved ones were daring and brave, and they had that special grace, that special spirit that says, 'Give me a challenge and I'll meet it with joy.' They had a hunger to explore the universe and discover its truths. They wished to serve, and they did. They served all of us. We've grown used to wonders in this century. It's hard to dazzle us. But for twenty-five years the United States space program has been doing just that. We've grown used to the idea of space, and perhaps we forget that we've only just begun. We're still pioneers. They, the members of the Challenger crew, were pioneers.

Ronald Wilson Reagan Born:

Ronald Wilson Reagan rode to the presidency in 1980 on a tide of resurgent right-wing sentiment among an electorate longing for a distant, simpler era. He left office in Jan. 1989 with two-thirds of the American people approving his performance during his two terms. It was the highest rating for any retiring president since World War II. Reagan earned a BA degree in 1932 from Eureka (Ill.) College, where a photographic memory aided in his studies and in debating and college theatricals. During the Depression, he made $100 a week as a sports announcer for radio station WHO in Des Moines, Iowa. His career as a film and TV actor stretched from 1937 to 1966, and his salary climbed to $3,500 a week. As a World War II captain in army film studios, Reagan recoiled from what he saw as the laziness of civil service workers, and moved to the Right. As president of the Screen Actors Guild, he resisted what he considered a Communist plot to subvert the film industry. With advancing age, Reagan left leading-man roles and became a television spokesman for the General Electric Company. With oratorical skill as his trademark, Reagan became an active Republican. In 1966, at the behest of a small group of conservative businessmen, he ran for governor of California with a pledge to cut spending; he was elected by almost a million votes over the political veteran, Democratic governor Edmund G. Brown. Reelected to a second term, he served as governor until 1975.

Biography

The life of Ronald Wilson Reagan is a story of unlikely successes. Born into a poor family, he came of age during the hard economic times of the Great Depression of the 1930's. Yet he was able to achieve great success in two quite different fieldsas an actor and in politics. Reagan's political career began when, in 1964, after his acting career had ended, he was elected governor of California. He then twice soughtand twice failed to gainthe REPUBLICAN nomination for the PRESIDENCY , before winning the nomination and the ELECTION in 1980. At the age of 69, he was the oldest person ever to become president of the United States. Early Years Reagan was born in Tampico, Illinois, on February 6, 1911. His father, John Edward Reagan, who was of Irish-American ancestry, earned his living as a shoe salesman. His mother, Nelle Wilson Reagan, was of English and Scottish ancestry. Neither of his parents had more than an elementary school education. Ronald, nicknamed Dutch, had an older brother, Neil. Reagan's father often moved the family around the state searching for better-paying jobs. But life in the small towns of Illinois was pleasant. "My existence turned into one of those rare Huck Finn-Tom Sawyer idylls," Reagan recalled in his autobiography

Ronald Reagan - The Bonzo Years
For those of us who lived (and paid attention) during the Reagan years, life was interesting. What would that wacky, happy guy say or do next? Would he embarrass the country by falling asleep at an international summit? Would he show us some more pie charts while increasing the national debt? Would he allow junk bond kings to destroy entire communities while downsizing fever ruined countless lives? All this and more. Every day was a new experience, a new challenge to see just how much the American public would take. Of course, the answer (as provided by his next two successors) is: just about anything. Not to pick on the ol' Gipper, but the clips below are a matter of public record. Take a walk down memory lane and remind yourself of why future historians will look back on the Reagan Error and say: "Where was the rest of him?" Some people may find the following funny, others may find it painful. As there's quite a bit of stuff here, please feel free to use the following links to jump to the year of your choice. Columnist Nelson suggests another source for the Medal of Honor story: a war-time story in the April 1944 issue of Reader's Digest (a lifelong favorite magazine of President Reagan). The story ends: "The ball turret gunner was badly wounded and stuck in the blister on the underside of the fuselage. Crewmen worked frantically to extricate the youngster, but there was nothing they could do. They began to jump. The terror-stricken lad screamed in fear as he saw what was happening. The last man to jump heard the remaining crewman, a gunner, say, 'Take it easy, kid. We'll take this ride together.'"
President Reagan nominates Ed Meese as the new Attorney General (head of the Justice Department).
"You find yourself remembering what it was like when on the spur of the moment you could just yell to your wife that you were going down to the drugstore and get a magazine. You can't do that anymore." - President Reagan telling Time magazine about being President.

Balancing Budgets: From Reagan to Today

Use our free online Teaching Tools to create custom worksheets, puzzles and quizzes on this topic!
Students will understand the following:
The concept of a balanced federal budget has attracted much attention from the 1980s through today. Citizens, politicians, and interest groups have considered various approaches to balancing the federal budget. For this lesson, you will need: Computer with Internet access Books, articles, and editorials (covering the period from the 1980s to today) on balancing the federal budget Index cards for note taking Explain that the issues of a budget deficit and a balanced budget, given such celebrity during the Reagan administration, dominated presidential politics for years afterward as well. Bring students up-to-date by telling them that the 1990s saw movements in favor of (1) a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution and (2) a balanced budget act. Make clear that the idea of an amendment did not gain sufficient support but that Congress did pass and President Clinton did sign the Balanced Budget Act of 1997.

President Reagan's Response
According to White House spokesman Larry Speakes, Vice President George Bush and national security adviser John Poindexter notified President Reagan of the explosion during a meeting with top aides. The president ended the meeting and gathered around a White House television with aides to watch news reports. "The president stood there in almost stunned silence as he watched the television," Speakes said. President Reagan was scheduled to give a televised State of the Union speech on the night of January 28, 1986. Instead, Reagan spoke to a grieving nation about the Challenger tragedy . In preparing the official White House response, the staff prepared a memo which outlined what President Johnson had done in the aftermath of the Apollo 1 tragedy in 19 years earlier. Here is the text of the televised speech he made from the Oval Office.
Address to the Nation
"Ladies and Gentlemen, I'd planned to speak to you tonight to report on the state of the Union, but the events of earlier today have led me to change those plans. Today is a day for mourning and remembering. Nancy and I are pained to the core by the tragedy of the shuttle Challenger. We know we share this pain with all of the people of our country. This is truly a national loss.

Comments on the writing habits of Reagan and how his compositions typically evolved from their original format on yellow legal pads to finished typewritten documents then sometimes retranscribed onto index cards for use in presentations. Ronald Reagan's abilities as a political leader will long be debated. His ability to raise to an emotional public occasion can hardly be doubted. His speech at the memorial for the crew of the Challenger Shuttle, all killed in full public view during the launch, was a masterpiece.

The Reagan Revolution involved cutting back the size of the federal government and getting it out of the lives of Americans. Reagan came in to office with three core principles and an agenda by which to implement them. He believed that the government was too big, that it taxed too much, and that the Soviet Union was an evil empire, getting away with atrocities across the world. From the first day of his Presidency, Reagan began to move systematically towards enacting his campaign promises, and, in so doing, he rejuvenated the American spirit. Reagan was born on February 6, 1911 in a small apartment above a bank in Tampico, Illinois to John (Jack) and Nelle Reagan. The Reagans finally settled in Dixon, where young Ron came to be known for his exploits as a lifeguard.
