IMPROVING reading speed, R4. I read very slowly. . I like. Now, areyou ready for some tips? Tips on improving your reading speed
http://lc.ust.hk/~sac/advice/R4.htm
IMPROVING READING SPEED "I read very slowly." "I tend to read the same line over and over again." "I have loads of readings to do and I don't think I would ever finish them." Do these comments sound familiar to you? If yes, don't feel bad because you are reading in a foreign language. When people read in a foreign language, very often, they don't have enough confidence in their text interpretation; and therefore, they usually read more slowly than they do in their own language. After these words of comfort and reassurance, of course, you still want to improve your reading speed. Before you read on, consider the following: How fast (or how slowly) do I read? It is important to measure your reading speed before and after your practice in speed reading so that you know how much you have achieved. To do so,
  • Choose two reading passages of about the same length and the same difficulty level. (For convenience sake, choose two passages from "Practical Faster Reading" in the SAC.) Use one passage before practice and the other after.

  • Two or three times a day, read something you enjoy for 15 to 20 minutes without stopping. Time yourself to within 30 seconds.
  • Record your reading rate and chart your progress. Recording and charting are essential if you wish to make real progress.
  • Speed - push yourself gently as you read. If your mind wanders, get it back on track.
  • Vocabulary - Wait until you've finished reading to look up unfamiliar words. (If you stop, you'll reduce your level of comprehension.)
  • Comprehension - to improve comprehension, recite the chapter after closing the book. See how many specific details you can recall. The more you interact with your text, the more you'll recall. Recollection and comprehension require a vigorous approach.

    Photo Reading
Other Speed-Reading Systems Traditional Speed-Reading Systems Reading Genius Compared to Photo Reading
    How Photoreading works:
A simple explanation is that they (Photo Reading Instructors) teach you to get into an "ideal learning state", commonly known as the alpha state, then focus from behind your head and defocus your eyes (using slightly blurred vision). They teach you to turn the pages and supposedly mentally photograph the pages suggesting that you can recall by activating the link within your subconscious memory. Then, they tell you to “speedread” the text for actual content and understanding. When you need to remember and use what you read, you are supposed to go deep in your unconscious and find it. Ugh? That’s where this system breaks down for the average or even above average person... it’s not very pragmatic. If it sounds abstract and complex and that's because it is for most people. Few people master at it and your average student or professional needs real results right away... not abstract ideas that may kick in later. PhotoReading also has a very strong New Age slant that puts off many people, even those who are generally open to new ideas.

Don’t waste $200-$1000 or weeks of your life on learning a full scale speed reading course. SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVING YOUR READING SPEED
    LEARN TO CONTROL SUBVOCALIZATION:
When I first learned to read, I was taught to sound out letters, then syllables and finally words. Then I read out loud to the class and Mrs. Langbein. As I got older I began to read to myself, and soon I could read the words silently in my head. That’s .... Subvocalizing. It’s much slower than just reading. Because one can only speak at about 200 words per minute if from down south, or maybe a bit faster if from up north ... so if you subvocalize every word you’ll slow down your reading considerably. To prevent subvocalizing use a CD or cassette tape of nature sounds through headphones while you're reading. Sounds strange ... but it works.

    speed-reading
Speed-reading is the purported ability to read as many as 10,000 to 25,000 words a minute. For example, Howard Berg claims to be able to read 25,000 words a minute by reading "15 lines at a time backwards and forwards." That's about 80-90 pages a minute. Tolstoy's War and Peace should take Berg about 15 minutes to read. George Stancliffe claims he has taught a woman with a reading disability to read 18,000 words a minute. Such a feat, he says, is common in children, but rare in adults. Anne Cunningham, a University of California at Berkeley education professor and an expert on reading, reports that tests measuring saccades (small rapid jerky movement of the eye as it jumps from fixation on one point to another) while reading have determined that the maximum number of words a person can accurately read is about 300 a minute. "People who purport to read 10,000 words a minute are doing what we call skimming," she said. Speed in reading is mainly determined by how fast a reader can understand the words and expressions one is reading. The fastest readers are those with excellent "recognition vocabularies." Faster readers can see words and understand them faster than slower readers. To improve one's speed at reading, she says, one should work on comprehension and study strategies (Robertson).

DYNAMIC SPEED READING SEMINAR You will double your reading speed by the end of this exciting seminar and you will increase your reading comprehension and reading pleasure! You will read more in less time! We get more printed information thrown at us in one day than our great-grandparents saw in a lifetime. (Beyond a seed catalog and a book or two, what did they have to look at and absorb?) Today, information is coming at us from all directions. Books, memos, periodicals, email, newspapers, reports, faxes, magazines, the Internet, and more leave many buried, able to wade through just a fraction of what they need to know. Do you happen to know anyone who has a stack a stuff that they haven't had time to go through? Maybe that's you. Knowledge is power. This is the Information Age. Half of what we know today, we didn't know just fifteen years ago. The amount of information has doubled just in the last fifteen years and some experts predict it will be doubling again every two years. Everyone has books on the shelf they've never read because they didn't have the time. Some even find reading a slow, laborious task because they read slowly, their mind wanders, they're often having to go back and re-read what they just read.

    Improving Reading Speed
Activities for the Classroom by Neil J. Anderson To many second language readers, reading is a suffocatingly slow process; yet developing rapid reading, an essential skill for all students, is often neglected in the classroom. Data from Segalowitz, Poulsen, and Komoda (1991:15) indicate that the second language (L2) reading rates of highly bilingual readers are "30% or more slower than L1 reading rates." These data are also supported by Weber (1991), who points out that highly skilled bilinguals typically have a slower reading rate in a second language. Perkins and Pharis (1980) state that average ESL readers are well below average native English speakers in reading ability. Jensen (1986:106) indicates that "at the end of a reading course, even advanced ESL students may read only 100 words per minute or less." The purpose of this article is to discuss classroom activities that increase reading speed. These activities are designed to increase L2 learners¡¯ reading rates to a satisfactory level, so that students are successful in academic reading tasks.
Research findings on the value of rapid reading The earliest studies conducted with native English speakers indicated that rapid reading was only a skimming strategy used to cover the reading material (Brown, Inouye, Barrus, and Hansen 1981). Yet, later studies show that readers achieved not only rapid-reading skills but also better comprehension when specifically taught rapid-reading techniques (Cranney, Brown, Hansen, and Inouye 1982).

Hit a Homerun with Reading Speed
    Growing Independence and Fluency
    Lindsay Dean

    Rationale
To become fluent readers, children need to learn how to read faster, smoother, and more expressively. Students will be able to work on their reading fluency through repeated and dyad reading. By rereading text, students will learn to read more words per minute. By working with partners, students may learn new decoding skills and will get more practice reading. The more students read, the more their reading skills will improve. Materials: stopwatch (one per two people), pencil, paper, one baseball field chart per child (The chart will have a baseball field drawn on it. The goal is to hit a homerun, which means over the fence. There will be three different levels: infield, outfield, and a homerun), class set of a children's book about baseball Here Comes the Strikeout , by Leonard Kessler, worksheet with three or four simple sentences to read aloud to practice speed (ex. She has made a mess.) Procedures:
    1. Introduce the lesson by explaining the concept of cross-checking. Give an example of a sentence read the wrong way such as "I want some mean to eat." "Did that sentence make any sense? No, it should be "I want some meat to eat". "One thing to remember when you read is to make sure that the sentence makes sense when you read it aloud." Tell them that reading fluently results in reading that is more enjoyable and that today we are going to work on becoming fluent readers.

    Finding Out Your Reading Speed
    • Choose a piece of light reading, such as a novel and time yourself to read for 2 minutes.
    • Read at your normal reading pace for understanding.
Do this exercise now before going on to establish your reading speed.
    • Count the number of words that you managed to complete within two minutes.
    • Don't count every word.
    • Count the words in about ten lines to find out the average word length per line. Then count how many lines per page.
    • Multiply the average words per line by the number of lines you read in two minutes = the average number of words you read.
    • Don't forget to divide by 2 to get the words per minute.
For different kinds of text most readers usually read at these speeds: Easy, familiar material 100 - 250 words per minute Moderately difficult to which you want to pay close attention 70 words per minute Difficult material which you want to understand in depth 40 words per minute If you think that your reading needs to be improved you will need to practice reading faster. The only way is to concentrate on reading faster by making a conscious effort and to do it often enough. The more you do it the better you will get at it.
