BUILDING BRAILLE READING SPEED: SOME HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS
Building Braille Reading Speed: Some Helpful Suggestions
by Jerry Whittle From the Editor: For those of us who were not taught to read Braille efficiently as children or who did not become blind until adulthood, there are three Braille-reading options. We can sit around lamenting our bad luck and wishing that we could read Braille the way President Maurer does during his banquet addresses. We can learn a little Braille and use a gratefully but with some difficulty-complaining all the while about the frustration of not having Braille as a really first - rate tool of literacy. Or we can set to and work on increasing our reading speed on the theory that any increase will improve the usefulness of Braille and our competitiveness in the job market and in life. Speaking personally, I have chosen the last alternative and have been working to increase my reading speed for several years now. Perhaps that is why I found the following article both interesting and challenging. Finding the time to read 10,000 pages or more of Braille a year, as Harry Whittle recommends, sounds like a tall order to me, but I have discovered that the more one reads, the faster the words slide past under one's fingers, and I am already reading between ten and fifteen pages a day. Mr. Whittle teaches Braille as the Louisiana Center for the Blind. He certainly knows what he is talking about when he gives advice about increasing Braille reading speed. This article first appeared in the Winter, 1993 edition of the Pathfinder, the publication of the National Federation of the Blind of Louisiana. Here is what Mr. Whittle has to say:

Suggestions for Improving Reading Speed
Improvement of Reading Rate
It is safe to say that almost anyone can double his or her speed of reading while maintaining equal or even better comprehension. In other words, you can improve the speed with which you get what you want from your reading. The average college student reads between 250 and 350 words per minute on fiction and non-technical materials. A "good" reading speed is around 500 to 700 words per minute, but some people can read 1000 words per minute or more on these materials. What makes the difference? There are three main factors involved in improving reading speed: (1) the desire to improve, (2) the willingness to try new techniques and (3) the motivation to practice. Learning to read rapidly and well presupposes that you have the necessary vocabulary and comprehension skills. When you have advanced on the reading comprehension materials to a level at which you can understand college-level materials, you will be ready to practice speed reading in earnest.
The Role of Speed in the Reading Process
Most adults are able to increase their reading rate considerably and rather quickly without lowering their comprehension. These same individuals usually show a

[PHOTO/CAPTION: Susan Ford] [PHOTO/CAPTION: Ramona Walhof] Braille Reading Speed Are You Willing To Do What It Takes? by Susan Ford and Ramona Walhof From the Editor: Susan Ford and Ramona Walhof are sisters. As you will read, between them they have a broad range of reading and Braille-teaching experience. Susan now lives in Missouri and is an active and contributing Federation leader wherever she goes. Ramona, of course, is Secretary of the National Federation of the Blind and President of the NFB of Idaho. This is what they say: Many Braille readers have never been encouraged to work to achieve good speed. Slow reading is a disadvantage throughout life and causes the reader to under-use and undervalue the reading skill. But there is no need to continue forever as a slow reader. Some Braille readers develop a speed of 200 to 400 words per minute as small children. They will retain that speed with little or no effort. Braille readers who could not attain good speed as young children, however, can do so with some work, and it is certainly worth the effort. It is also desirable for teachers of blind children to encourage good Braille-reading speed. Susan Ford developed good Braille reading speed as a small child and retains it; Ramona Walhof had fair speed as a child and has had to work to improve. Our experiences in reading Braille and teaching for years have given us some ideas which may help others in achieving increased speed. Try these suggestions and talk with other good Braille readers. You should experience significant improvement.

Poor Reading Speed and Comprehension Immediate Improvement
The modern computer equipped with new software enables most people to instantly improve their reading speed and comprehension. Improvement occurs within the first five minutes. Skills are transferrable. Any text can be instantly read out loud in real human voice fluently as it is displayed on the screen one word or one sentence at a time. Pause time after presentation of the word on the screen and before pronunciation can be adjusted. Pause time after pronunciation of the word and before displaying the next word can also be adjusted. Text can be paused, continued, stopped or repeated at any point As a result many different learning styles can be perfectly matched. Also, text can be read silently without eye movement at up to 700 words per minute while one hears an internal voice read out loud. Students can create notes, five level outlines and two sided flash cards without any retyping of text. They can review text easily and quickly. This voice and text presentation can be easily recorded on standard video tapes and loaned out for home use. Each student can get thousands of hours of voice and text correlation at essentially no cost for home hardware or for teachers.

Speeding Through Reading
Seminar Notes
If you just hop into a strange car and race across a city you've never visited, you'll probably be in for a rough ride that doesn't get you where you want to go. The same thing is true of reading. Knowing how the brain effectively speeds the mental processing of print and knowing how to find what you want produce the best results. People have researched the behaviors of rapid readers to see how the eyes behave and how the eyes and brain work together to produce such good results. Consider the following points as you search for a way to increase your speed and efficiency.
Before You Read Preview the selection you need to read to see what it is about in general and to plan how you will attack it. For example, assume your psychology assignment is to read chapter seven, pages 325 - 350. To preview you read the chapter title, the introductory paragraphs, and the section headings and subheadings. Perhaps you notice that the chapter does not have any concluding paragraphs; it just ends. You notice it is about early childhood mental development and that each section explains a different theory. No one section appears to be complex, so you can read each section at about the same rate of speed. You decide to use a hi-liter to mark names and definitions. This professor does not give chapter tests but expects you to participate in class discussion after the lecture, so you will read primarily for the main idea about each theory.

Kurzweil 3000 Aids Reading Speed, Comprehension
Mary Ellen Bushnell A student working diligently at a computer is a common sight at MIT. If that computer were speaking to the student, you might suppose that he or she was visually impaired. But if you were to stand behind the student, looking at the screen, you might see the text displayed, and the spoken word highlighted in a contrasting color. Why would a student approach a reading assignment in this way? Plenty of bright people struggle with a learning disability (LD) of one type or another. While they are able to succeed in high school in spite of dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, or other learning problems, when they enter college they can be overwhelmed by the volumes of material to be read and processed. Over the past ten years, several software tools have been developed that serve people with learning disabilities. Among the applications at MIT's ATIC Lab (Adaptive Technology for Information and Computing), the most notable is Kurzweil 3000 (version 6). This software, from Kurzweil Educational Systems, is designed to help people with learning disabilities or visual impairments increase their reading speed and comprehension. It has Scan/Read, Read Station, and writing components.

Dear friend

When I meet people around town they often tell me they saw me teaching speed reading on TV or they say "I remember you, you're the one that taught me [or my sister] to speed read." But most of you haven't had the chance to get to know me or see what I do, so I'll start by telling you a little bit about myself. In 1980 I became convinced that speed reading could become a universal skill for all children if it were just made available in the right way to the general public. At that time the only speed reading courses

Double Your Reading Speed Now!
Do you read fast enough? Do you need an edge to satisfy the reading demands this "Information Age" has placed upon most of us? Would it help you to double your reading speed right now? One of my favorite tricks when I was teaching Psychology of Learning to graduate students was to offer them "Dr. Clarke's Two-Minute Course in Speed-Reading." I'd give them a timed reading test before, tell them the first technique I'm about to tell you. Then I'd time them while they first practiced the technique. Everyone improved their time immediately while learning the technique. You will, too.
O.K., here's the secret of how to double your reading speed, right now, quick and dirty.
First, if you are reading this on the web page, stop and take a moment to save the page as text. Offline, print this article in hard copy. Then, grab a standard size bookmark (most are 8" x 2" or 6" x 1 1/2") or fold a sheet of paper to that size. Now, while reading the rest of this article (and from now on, everything else you read) place the bookmark lengthwise across the page with the lower edge immediately above the line of text you are currently reading. As you finish reading a line, pull the bookmark down to cover that line.

High speed reading is generally only sustainable for short bursts.

One way to increase your reading speed is to improve your fluency. This allows youreyes to make fewer fixations, which in turn increases your reading speed.
    http://www.wwu.edu/depts/tutorialcenter/readingspeed.htm
    Increasing your Reading Fluency
One common problem that students have with textbook reading is how long it takes to do. High-powered speed-reading is usually not appropriate for college reading. Often textbooks are dense with information and you will need to give your mind time to comprehend and make connections. One way to increase your reading speed is to improve your fluency. The most common factor that interferes with fluent reading is regression. Regression is the tendency to re-read a sentence, phrase, or passage that has already been read. Often people don’t even notice when they do it. Usually, regression is a result of a lack of concentration the first time through. The best way to control regression is to notice when you do it and make a conscious effort to increase your concentration. You can use a note-card when you read to cover what you have already read as you go along. If you go back to re-read you will have to move the note-card, which will bring the regression to your attention. Another way to improve your fluency is to reduce word-by-word reading. Try to look at phrases instead of individual words. This allows your eyes to make fewer fixations, which in turn increases your reading speed. Reading in phrases will also make it easier to determine the author’s meaning.
