Phonics and whole language learning: a balanced approach to beginning reading
From the National Association for the Education of Young Children Children cannot learn to read without an understanding of phonics. All children must know their ABCs and the sounds that letters make in order to communicate verbally. The question in early childhood programs is not whether to teach "phonics" or "whole language learning," but how to teach phonics in context—rather than in isolation—so that children make connections between letters, sounds, and meaning. Phonics should not be taught as a separate "subject" with emphasis on drills and rote memorization. The key is a balanced approach and attention to each child's individual needs. Many children's understanding of phonics will arise from their interest, knowledge, and ideas. Others will benefit from more formal instruction. There are many opportunities to teach the sound a letter makes when children have reason to know. For example, the first letter a child learns typically is the first letter of her name. Some teachers worry that encouraging children to learn through experience and invent their own spellings will not provide them with adequate language skills. But literacy is not so much a skill as a complex activity that involves reading, writing and oral language. Ideally, children should develop literacy through real life settings as they read together with parents or other caring adults. Children begin to make connections between printed words and their representations in the world. Adults should keep in mind that children may learn to read at different paces during kindergarten and first grade. This is true for all children, including those with special needs and those from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds. If parents and teachers work together and demonstrate mutual respect, children's learning will be reinforced at home and in the classroom.

Learning the ABCs of PCM Diagnosis, Larry Carley, May 1999
This is certainly not your father’s Oldsmobile. We used to call them "ECMs" (Electronic Control Modules). But the correct terminology for engine computers today, says the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), is Powertrain Control Module or "PCM," Brain box, black box, or blankety-blank-blank - whatever you choose to call them, electronic control modules have taken over the modern day automobile (and truck, too). Some vehicles today have a half dozen or more different control modules. Some have one module for the engine, another for the automatic transmission, a third for the climate control system, a fourth for the antilock brake/traction control system, a fifth for an electronic suspension and a sixth for a variable rate power steering system. There may also be additional modules for the cruise control system, airbags, memory seats or even an onboard navigation system. Life is more complicated these days with tough emission standards, fuel economy requirements and safety regulations. Consumers also expect more from their vehicles, and want the latest accessories and gadgets. Consequently, it takes a lot of electronic processing power to control all of these different functions. On some vehicles, various functions have been combined and integrated into a single box to reduce cost and complexity - such as combining engine management, cruise control, charging regulation and automatic transmission operation into the PCM. But no matter what engineers do, there’s still the problem of reliability. The more complex the system, the greater the chance of something failing. And like any other component, PCMs sometimes fail and have to be replaced.

A mother's journey through kindergarten:
December Update
A journal by Tracy R. Grant December 3 "What prayer should we say tonight?" Andrews, left Bill and Christopher
at the National Zoo. December 5 The state board of education in Maryland decides today to require that children be 5 by Sept. 1 before starting kindergarten, instead of by Dec. 31. Under that criterion the issue of "holding the boys back" would never have been an issue. The board, teachers and parents groups had argued that under an increasingly "academic" kindergarten model, 4-year-olds can't thrive. I take this as a huge endorsement of my mothering instincts-I take my victories where I can get them. December 8 "Oh I'm glad you came up, Mom-mom. I'm having trouble with the words on this page." He has pulled an early reader from his bookshelf. One of those variations on "See Spot Run" that promotes word recognition and phonics. He is on page 8. He has read 7 pages of this book by himself. How did this happen? My emotions flood. Enormous pride, but a sense of passing time. As they start to read, I realize that the nights we spend cuddled on their bed or on the sofa reading stories are numbered. We may do it for another two years or five years, but at some point, it will end and I feel a gaping hole in my soul for what has become the defining family ritual. I resolve that no matter how tired I am, no matter how much they are scamming me when they beg for "one more chapter" I will relent. For my boys are growing their wings and time is short.

Service Learning and the New ABCs
A perfect complement to North Carolina's New ABCs of Public Education Reform Model, service-learning is helping to foster change in teaching and learning and thereby contributing to improved public education and schools in the state. In the ABCs, service-learning can be a powerful strategy for helping students master the basics, reading, writing and mathematics, along with becoming active citizens in the community. Moreover, nationally service-learning has become part of many educational reform initiatives. Many state departments of education are supporting service-learning through grants from the Learn and Serve America program, as well as through character education and school-to-work initiatives and programs for the prevention of alcohol and drug abuse, dropouts, violence and gangs, and teenage pregnancy.
