Department of Philosophy Autumn 2002
71C5 Rationalism and Empiricism
This core unit deals with central issues in metaphysics and the theory of knowledge through a study of selected major works in the early modern (17th and 18th century) history of philosophy. The chosen texts are Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy and Locke's Essay concerning Human Understanding . Many of the problems first systematically explored in these works remain at the heart of philosophy, and the solutions to those problems proposed by Descartes and Locke still set the scene for contemporary discussion of them. For this reason the unit provides essential background to advanced work in philosophy.
Outcomes
* To develop understanding of such central topics as: the certainty and basis of knowledge; the possibility of establishing substantial truths about the world without recourse to observation; the objectivity of both everyday and scientific descriptions of the world; the nature of mind and the self. * To develop the abilities involved in the close study and criticism of historical texts. * By means of this specific programme, the unit further aims to improve critical reading, critical thinking, and oral communication skills through the seminar discussion and essay writing processes. (Refer to Section B of the Student Handbook for more details.)

Rationalism
(Latin, ratio reason, the faculty of the mind which forms the ground of calculation, i. e. discursive reason. See APOLOGETICS: ATHEISM ; BIBLE; DEISM; EMPIRICISM; ETHICS; BIBLICAL EXEGESIS; FAITH; MATERIALISM; MIRACLE ; REVELATION). The term is used: (1) in an exact sense, to designate a particular moment in the development of Protestant thought in Germany; (2) in a broader, and more usual, sense to cover the view (in relation to which many schools may he classed as rationalistic) that the human reason, or understanding, is the sole source and final test of all truth. It has further: (3) occasionally been applied to the method of treating revealed truth theologically, by casting it into a reasoned form, and employing philosophical Categories in its elaboration. These three uses of the term will be discussed in the present article. The German school of theological Rationalism formed a part of the more general movement of the eighteenth-century "Enlightenment". It may be said to owe its immediate origin to the philosophical system of Christian Wolff (1679-1754), which was a modification, with Aristotelean Lutherans miracles recorded in, and the authenticity of the Holy Scriptures. Nevertheless, the distinction between Rationalism and Naturalism still obtained. The great Biblical critic Semler (1725-91), who is one of the principal representatives of the school, was a strong opponent of the latter; in company with Teller (1734-1804) and others he endeavoured to show that the records of the Bible have no more than a local and temporary character, thus attempting to safeguard the deeper revelation, while sacrificing to the critics its superficial vehicle. He makes the distinction between theology and religion (by which he signifies ethics).

Progressive Living
Defintion 'Rationalism' is Within the context of philosophy, rationalism is often contrasted with empiricism, the view that knowledge can only be derived from observation. The more modest sort of philosophical rationalist, by contrast, has tended to point out that we can hardly arrive at knowledge without employing reason to infer, deduce, evaluate, categorize, compare, describe, and so on. Moreover, the rationalist would point out that there is a strong contrast between simple, unevaluated experience and well-justified knowledge, and that there are some forms of knowledge, such as knowlege about knowledge, that have little to do with observation. Among empiricists, there can be found some tendency to accord to philosophy a very minor role, chiefly that of speculating about issues science hasn't yet cleared up, or perhaps clarification of terminology. Rationalists take a dim view of this minor role, and are apt to ask the empiricist what it is that scientists are doing when they argue, for example, about scientific method, an argument that is apt to have little to do with specific scientific observations, and which the rationalist would say properly belongs within the confines of philosophy of science. The leading proponent of rationalism in the 20th century was American philosopher

Definition:
The doctrine of rationalism holds that the source of knowledge is reason and logic. This is usually contrasted with the idea that faith, revelation and religion are also valid sources of knowlege and verification. Rationalism is often contrasted with empiricism , although it is possible to be both a rationalist and an empiricist. Epistemology is the investigation into the grounds and nature of knowledge itself. Epistemological studies are usually focused upon our means for acquiring knowledge, and as a consequence, modern epistemology generally involves a debate between rationalism and empiricism, or the question of whether knowledge can be acquired a priori or a posteriori What is Philosophy?

Empiricism, Rationalism and Atheism
Guide picks Rationalism and Empiricism are philosophical attitudes taken by many atheists when examining the world. Included are many links to and about texts by Kant, Hume and Descartes.
British Empiricism

"British Empiricism" refers to the 18th century philosophical movement in Great Britain which maintained that all knowledge comes from experience. False Hopes of Traditional Epistemology?

Continental Rationalism The term "Continental Rationalism" traditionally refers to a 17th century philosophical movement begun by Descartes. After Descartes, several dozen scientists and philosophers continued his t eachings throughout continental Europe and, accordingly were titled "Cartesians." Critique of Practical Reason Kant's critique took away much of the philisophical underpinnings of Christian morality.

Rationalism
Reasoning from Inner World to Outer Reality
  • Two main theories of knowledge
  • Empiricism: "The position stressing the role of experience"
  • Rationalism: "The position which stresses the role of intellect or reason as the basis for knowledge."
  • Two types of information available:
  • sense data (a posteriori)
  • definitional (a priori)
  • Plato and the epistemology of his metaphysic
  • Saw reason as the most important separation between humans and animals
  • Fulfilling reason must be what would lead to human happiness.
  • Reason must attain to knowledge
  • But the world around us is changing
  • Thus can yield only opinion.
  • The advantages to the soul on the death of the body
  • The body exists in the world of being
  • Senses from the world of being can misfunction
  • The soul's search for knowledge is bothered by the encumbrance of the body.
  • Compare Paul: 1 Cor 13:9, 12 "For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears.... Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known."
  • Innate Ideas
  • Some principle which the mind finds already "pre-installed"
  • Not Instinct

You'll never be free unless you can work this out:
If you always believe what you're told,
what happens when you're told a lie?
If you never believe what you're told,
how can you know what's happening outside your door? Humans have minds, though many so-called humans don't seem to use them. The human mind as we know it hasn't always been present, though. It took a whole host of consciousness-pioneers to manufacture it and polish it up. In the Western world, the first recorded examples of rational thinking are the fragmentary writings of Greece's Milesian School, from Thales to Heraclitus . The Milesians and other ancient Greek thinkers, Aristotle foremost among them, devised most of the "moves" we use today to analyse what's really happening and how things came to happen that way.
The Classical tradition, however, came to an abrupt halt when Christian and then Muslim fundamentalists conquered the Greco-Roman world. Bishops ordered the smashing of artworks, caliphs ordered the torching of great libraries. Many of the oldest Greek writings only exist as tiny shredded fragments recycled for use in wrapping corpses. It wasn't until the 14th Century or so that these fragments started to be rediscovered in Western Europe, a movement that came to be known as the Renaissance. From its origins as a purely antiquarian literary movement, the Renaissance spread to the arts. Suddenly, public buildings were no longer dark and grim, echoing Medieval religious fanaticism. The new buildings were light-filled and airy, laid out according to mathematical considerations. Suddenly, paintings were no longer the stylized, poorly-drawn cartoons of Medieval days. Painters like

Theorists are usually said to be "rationalists" or "empiricists" in light of a discerned family resemblance between one of their positions and a position championed by members of one of the traditional schools (cf.
