Computers and Writing Online Conference 2001 Every communication technology or medium must be matched carefully with the correct purpose and audience. Choosing a particular technology or medium is based on the answers to the following questions:
  • Is there a need for one-to-one communications? One to many? Many to many?
  • What is the purpose of the communication? To provide information? To build social bonds? To brainstorm and critique? To accomplish a specific goal? To test knowledge? There are tools available to do all the above. These goals can be met with software available to WWTC faculty, and with free software or by using the free service of a website. The Committee on the Literatures of People of Color in the United States and Canada (CLPCUSC) began as the Commission on Minority Groups and the Study of Language and Literature (1973-77). The Commission on the Literatures and Languages of America (CLLA) was established to replace the previous commission in 1978 and became a standing committee in 1988. The committee changed its name to the present form in 2000. The CLPCUSC now consists of ten scholars representing research and teaching in African American, American Indian, Asian and Pacific American, Chicana and Chicano, and Puerto Rican literatures. The committee takes the term people of color to refer to groups that historically have been considered to be racialized minorities in the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the committee has urged that approaches to American literature, culture, and languages be reconceptualized to include and to regard the texts, narrative traditions, and critical practices of so-called minority literatures as essential to the canons of college-level literary studies. The committee has implemented this reconceptualization by fostering curriculum development through NEH seminars in Native American and African American literatures, panels at the MLA Annual Convention, and seven volumes of critical essays and course designs. An eighth volume that had its origin in the work of the committee addresses issues of race, power, and gender in the academic workplace.

Beyond the Library Walls by Phyllis Holman Weisbard In your travels around the Web, if you’ve noticed some organized sites with helpful explanations of each linked resource as well as hints on how to search the Web effectively to find information on women, chances are the sites were created by librarians. Why? Because we are trained to classify, organize, describe, evaluate, teach, list, and actually find information. And we love doing it. Plus most librarians (about 83%) are women, and many of us have had computers in our work lives for almost twenty-five years. When Internet resources started popping up, no wonder librarians were right there trying to create order out of the chaos.
    The University of Wisconsin System

which I created and maintain, is an example of an attempt to help faculty and students in women’s and gender studies locate material relevant to their course work and research interests. For my office staff and me, this is an extension of the work we have long been doing with print and audiovisual resources. First, A bit of background. In the mid-1970s, when women’s studies programs were being established on campuses of the University of Wisconsin, concerned faculty and librarians on those campuses lamented the lack of book lists, bibliographies, and other tools to help them find material on women in the libraries. They came up with the idea of requesting funding from the central administration of the university system for a librarian-at-large who would assess the existing library collections and alert everyone to new resources. The first statewide women’s studies librarian (WSL) began her work in 1977.

This revision of 13 November, 1994, is an extensive update of the version of March, 1994. A lesser revision of form and content is anticipated before the end of 1994. This is a list of Internet special interest lists (also called "forums") broadly related to the study of history. It is over 100 Kb in length, which most people will find too big to download or read through. I suggest two methods to explore it. One is to do a search for a keyword of interest to you. Better is to use the links in the following table of contents to reach the section you want. I. History Lists A. Universal and General History B.
