Graduate Handbook:
Some General Advice About Graduate School
The following are some suggestions on how to be successful in your graduate training at Western. The list is by no means exhaustive, but represents what several senior students feel to be important to keep in mind as you proceed through your first year. Western's psychology department is primarily research oriented . The system of rewards is therefore geared toward those who are actively involved in research activities. It's a good idea to get going on your research right from day one. Start thinking about your M.A./Ph.D. thesis and get involved in other research projects as well if possible. Plan the composition of your thesis committee with care, in consultation with your advisor and other students. Different faculty and areas within the department put different amounts of weight on course work and other activities, and you should check this out with senior students in your area. However, as a general rule, you can't go wrong by doing research and as long as you keep up with your other work, you are going to survive here. If you can arrange to have your course requirements and research interests coincide, all the better. Get to know your advisor and other faculty members . Find out what faculty members' interests are, what kind of research they are doing, take their courses, and approach them with your own research ideas. Don't be afraid to be assertiveinitiate contacts with your advisor and other faculty, arrange weekly meetings with your advisor to discuss your research, and generally be seen.

Programs
Interdisciplinary Programs The Graduate School offers advanced study in 28 areas that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries. Admission and degree requirements listed for these programs supplement The Graduate School's general requirements.
Two types of interdepartmental programs are administered by The Graduate School: those to which students are admitted directly (Interdepartmental Degree Programs) and those in which students may participate only after their admission to another department in The Graduate School (Interdepartmental Specialization Programs).
Eight interdepartmental degree programs , encompassing a wide range of disciplines from the sciences, social sciences, and humanities are offered. These programs recognize the advantages of multiple perspectives and methodological applications in emerging areas of research and offer students the opportunity to work with faculty from more than one department.

GENERAL INFORMATION ON GRADUATE SCHOOL IN BIOLOGY
If you are interested in teaching and/or doing research at the college/university level in biology, a Ph.D. in a specialized area of biology is required. In addition, many research positions in industry, particularly directing a research project, require a Ph.D. A Ph.D. would be of benefit in some other (non-research) positions in industry as well (see information on biotech/business). Ph.D.-level biological scientists can also fill important needs in the areas of public policy, law, and teaching at other levels (i.e., informal science education, junior-college teaching, etc.). Please also see information on these related areas in this booklet if you are interested. Most Ph.D. programs in the biological sciences provide a tuition waiver and pay stipends to cover living expenses to enrolled students. Completing a Ph.D. usually takes about five years, most of which is spent performing research. Most programs begin with a year of course work, during which a research lab is identified through a series of research rotations. Teaching assistantships are often a part of the training. Generally, in addition to completing a Ph.D., most Ph.D. biological scientists spend several years (2-4) as post-doctoral fellows, performing additional research, often to specialize further in their research area before seeking a faculty position or another job. It is no longer common or necessary for those who plan to get a Ph.D. first to complete a Master's degree.

    Dean's Message
Here in the Graduate Psychology Program at New College of California we are pleased to offer a degree program in clinical psychology that is innovative as well as one of the best in the country. We believe that today in North America psychology is in crisis. Therefore, our approach to psychology differs from that taken by mainstream academic thought. As a result, our program trains clinicians who will remain community activists.
Knowledge can either liberate us or alienate us. Our Psychology Program provides our s tudents with knowledge of the human mind as well as its potential for helping individuals change themselves and the world. Because we believe that the epistemology and methodology of psychology should be embedded in the historical and social foundations of individual experience, our students observe and analyze this close relationship between the individual and the socio-historical in current conditions. They learn vital lessons that they c an apply in their everyday practice as therapists in training and as agents of social change.
In both our Social Clinical and Feminist Clinical concentrations, we start from the understanding that the mind does not grow in a vacuum, that an individual’s intrapsychic activities and their interpersonal experiences are profoundly affected by their ethnic and class background. Effective psychotherapy and mental health work in a pluralistic society depend heavily on such understandings.

There have been a number of recent developments in the socio-political landscape, including escalation of domestic and international terrorism; the public outcry to "get tough on crime"; and the changing demographics of those who are served by, as well as those who administer, the legal and mental health systems. These changes call for sensitivity to the unique dilemmas that confront forensic psychologists and those they serve, with an eye to advocacy for change. Our program significantly enhances a fundamental knowledge of psychology with exposure to a very broad range of issues that frame the discipline. Both the PhD and the PsyD degree curricula are formulated to meet the ever-evolving needs of forensic institutions, not just those that exist today.
    Interim Program Director
The AIU College of Arts and Sciences offers both PsyD and PhD programs in Forensic Psychology in Fresno and a part-time PsyD program in Los Angeles.
