Probability and Statistics I - 2002/03
Introduction
There will be two lectures per week throughout the year, given by Dr Gerrard. In addition to lectures, you will have one small-group tutorial per week. These do not start until the second week of the Autumn term. Your personalised timetable will show you where to go and when, as well as telling you the name of your statistics tutor. Please remember the difference between statistics tutor and personal tutor.
Tutorials
If you are having difficulties with the course, the tutorial group is the right place to raise them. There's no need to be shy about speaking up: you will usually find that half the group are having the same problems as you, but are too embarrassed to mention the fact. Another purpose of tutorials is to give you practice at solving problems, with your statistics tutor on hand to help you if you get stuck. Question sheets intended for this purpose, labelled 'Tutorial Questions', will be handed out from time to time.
Coursework
There will be four coursework sheets handed out during the year, each containing questions worth a maximum of 45 marks. The coursework sheet, with a cover sheet to attach to your solutions, is given out in tutorials.

Statistics Research
Statistics is
  • "the science of collecting, analyzing, presenting, and interpreting data. Governmental needs for census data as well as information about a variety of economic activities provided much of the early impetus for the field of statistics. Currently the need to turn the large amounts of data available in many applied fields into useful information has stimulated both theoretical and practical developments in statistics." From "statistics," Encyclopædia Britannica Online. http://search.eb.com/bol/topic?idxref=367392 [Accessed 25 September 2001]. "science of making valid inferences about the characteristics of a group of persons or objects on the basis of numerical information obtained from a randomly selected sample of the group. There are two broad subdivisions of this subject: descriptive statistics and theoretical statistics."
    "statistics,"
Encyclopædia Britannica Online. [Accessed 25 September 2001].
  • Sub-topics may include : variance, standard deviation, normal distribution, estimation, hypothesis testing. A related term is PROBABILITY.

    Exploring Probability and
    Statistics with Spreadsheets
    Callender, J.T. and R. Jackson Prentice Hall 1995, £15.95, pp. viii + 236
This short book is an introduction to statistics and probability in fourteen chapters designed for first-year students in engineering, science, and business studies. The level of the book is elementary and is suitable for students whose mathematical training at university level may amount to a single semester of algebra and calculus. The novelty of the book is that its examples and exercises involve the use of spreadsheets. The views of the authors are clearly expressed in the Preface: "The approach to the teaching of statistics has changed significantly over recent years from a mathematical to a data-oriented approach using real data sets. This has often involved the use of software packages, such as Minitab, SAS, Stratgraphics, etc., to assist in the handling of the data. It is the view of the authors that dedicated statistical software packages, where the analysis is semi-automatic, are unsuitable for teaching statistics. However, with spreadsheets this is not the case; the user has to set up the analysis. In addition, the easy to use graphical facilities are an excellent aid to learning, giving an intuitive grasp of difficult concepts. Furthermore, the use of spreadsheets is widely recognised as a professional communication skill in science, engineering and business." This seems exactly right, with the qualification that students taking a further course in probability and statistics are then able to begin the transition to dedicated statistical software.

    Course Description
STAB47H is a theoretical course. It is about some of the technical mathematics that underlies much of statistical methodology but also it is about the theories that justify the way we conduct statistical analyses.
    Tutorials
Every student has to register in a tutorial through ROSI. Do this as soon as possible. Attendance at tutorials is mandatory. Some of the total mark will be determined will be based on work done in the tutorials. There are no tutorials during the first week of classes.
    Evaluation
    • There will be either a quiz held each week in your assigned tutorial or you will be required to hand in an assignment to your tutor. These are worth a total of 15%. See the course schedule to determine when the quizzes will be conducted and on what material these will be based.
