    Unit aims
To introduce the basic ideas and methods of Probability, developing the concepts of random variables, expectations and variances and looking at some simple applications. To present some basic ideas in Statistics, covering elementary aspects of data presentation and modelling, and introductory statistical inference.
    General Description of the Unit
Probability is an everyday concept of which most people have only a vague intuitive understanding. Study of games of chance, such as tossing dice and card games, resulted in early attempts to formalise the theory; but a satisfactory rigorous basis for the subject only came with the axiomatic theory of Kolmogorov in 1933.

    Solutions:
    Past Exam Papers:
Here are some exam papers from previous years. Please treat these with some caution - this year's exam will not be in exactly the same style. The coverage of material is slightly different ( although this has also varied in previous years), but some of the basic questions on probabilities, binomial and Poisson distributions and the normal distribution will be relevant. The best guides for the coverage of this years exam are the notes and problem sheets, particularly the assessment sheets. Note that one particular change this year is that we have not covered anything on simple linear regression (on last year's papers), but we did cover bivariate discrete distributions!! Also, I did not put the same emphasis on techniques for frequency data when talking about data exploration and summary.

Probability and Statistics This is a list of statistics resources I have discovered on the World Wide Web (WWW). I hope you will find them useful. If you know of (or maintain) a statistics resource on the Web that you don't see here, please drop me a line to let me know about it, and I'll take a look at it. Enjoy! Note: this site, and my expertise, have to do with statistical methods . You won't find any information here about:
    • Which web sites are most popular
    • Demographic profiles of computer owners or net surfers
    • How many web pages there are
Or other related questions. For answers, you might try Media Metrix or DoubleClick . I also can't tell you how many ophthamologists there are in Montana, or how many people visited Disneyland in 1997, or what the most popular brand of fish sticks is. For those, try LEXIS-NEXIS or DIALOG . Also see Paula Berenstein's nice book, Finding Statistics Online , which deals with such questions much better than I could.

Confirmatory methods apply ideas from probability theory in an attempt to answer Palette(SIIP) http//research.ed.asu.edu/siip/ 7) statistics tutorials by A
    http://eduscapes.com/42explore/statistics.htm
The Topic: Easier - A statistic is a fact or piece of information that is expressed as a number or percentage. The facts and figures that are collected and examined for information on a given subject are statistics. Probability is the likelihood of something happening or being true. Harder - Statistics is a set of methods used to collect and analyze data. Those statistical methods help people identify, study, and solve a variety of problems. Statistics help people make good decisions about uncertain situations. Probability is used to describe events that do not occur with certainty. People in varied occupations use statistics. Health professionals use statistical methods to determine whether a specific drug or procedure is useful in the treatment of medical problems. Weather forecasters use statistics to more accurately predict the weather. Engineers use statistics to benchmark standards for product safety and quality. Scientists employ statistical methods to design effective experiments. Economists apply statistical techniques in predicting future economic trends.
