Prince Edward Island
Canada's Best Kept Secret by Rita Cook
Prince Edward Island, Canada, the smallest Canadian Province, is one of Canada's best kept secret's and rightly so because until recently getting there meant taking either a ferry or an airplane. The building of the nine-mile Confederation Bridge joining Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, has made getting to the island easier, but it still affords the traveler a wonderful island feel. Visiting Prince Edward Island is a surprise to many visitors because of the diversity of what the small Canadian province offers. There's 25-miles of National Park including beaches, dunes and salt marshes. No matter if you're interested in walking down a quiet, country lane, sinking your toes into the warm sand along the shore, or just taking in a local festival, Prince Edward Island offers everything. Like on every island, you'll find lighthouses that you must visit, scattered among the timeless, seaside villages that reminded me of stories I'd read as a child, but never expected to find in real life.

About the IGA History The IGA Executive Member Islands ... Contact Us © IGA PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND LOCATION AND COMMUNICATION LINKS Prince Edward Island has the distinction of being the smallest political unit in one of the world’s largest countries, Canada. "The Island," as it is known affectionately by its inhabitants, is situated in the Gulf of St. Lawrence off the Atlantic coast of North America. At 46° North latitude, it is about half-way between the Equator and the North Pole. Despite its location some 15km from the nearest point on the adjacent mainland, Prince Edward Island will soon be connected by "the Fixed Link," a bridge, due to open in 1997, a prospect welcomed by half of the inhabitants and viewed with misgivings by the rest. In the meantime, there is a year-round ferry service, as well as excellent air links through the modern airport at Charlottetown. GEOGRAPHY First-time visitors to Prince Edward Island are often struck by the vivid red of the soil and the beauty of the gently rolling landscape, much of it under cultivation in potatoes and grain. Because of this rather intense agricultural activity, the island has come to be called the ‘Garden of the Gulf’. The typical red is caused by the high content of oxidized iron (rust!) in the island sandstone, itself part of a great plain of sedimentary rocks, formed in Permo Carboniferous times and now mostly submerged under the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Oddly enough, the island did not exist as a distinct geographical entity until about 5,000 years ago, when rising waters eroded away the last of the land bridge to the continent.

A tribute in his name, The Wendell Boyle Foundation is being established to recognize and assist children and adults who share his lifetime skills, joys and interest in the arts. Wendell was especially known for his devotion to Island history, music and culture, and the encouragement of others in becoming public performers. Wendell's other fields of interests include gardening, farming, theatre, assisting visual artists, science, technology, health and communications. The interest from the fund will be awarded annually to groups or individuals who are devoted in their trade, craft or art to preserving and furthering P.E.I. culture. http://www3.pei.sympatico.ca/belfast.cap/history.htm
Other Pages: Home/Index Business Directory - History - Belfast News T he first settlers of the Belfast area identified by historians were the aboriginals called the Miq Maqs. They were attracted to the rich fishing and clamming sites in our community. The mixed forests held lots of game animals and marshes and fields were covered in edible plants. T he "modern" history of the area really began in the 1800s. Lord Selkirk's Highland Scot settlers first arrived in Belfast on the "Polly" on August 7, 1803 when they anchored in Orwell Bay just off the present day location of Lord Selkirk Park, between the towns of Eldon and Pinette. The Belfast area had previously been settled by the French in the mid 1700s but they were forced to abandon their homesteads by the British during the expulsion of the Acadians in 1758. Despite the availability of ready, cleared land following the expulsion, attempts to settle the abandoned Acadian homesteads in 1775 and again in 1785 ended in failure. P erhaps the success of Lord Selkirk's settlers can be attributed to the approach to settlement devised by Thomas Douglas, Fifth Earl of Selkirk. At a time when the vast majority of the Island's absentee owners were attempting to populate their lands granted to them by the King with poor tenant farmers from whom they could demand rent, Lord Selkirk took a decidedly different approach. The Gaelic speaking Scotch Presbyterians from the highlands and islands who came to Belfast shared a common language, culture and religion. They were also allowed to own their lands instead of being tenants. Selkirk was not interested in being a land baron who simply collected his rents unlike the vast majority of his fellow land owners. Most of the Belfast settlers actually gave up leases in the "auld sod" and paid for their passage and land in the new world.

    Welcomes you
The province of Prince Edward Island, also known as PEI, is Canada’s smallest province and situated in the Gulf of St. Lawrence on Canada's east coast. Prince Edward Island is separated from mainland Canada, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, by the Northumberland Strait. The Island, as many call PEI, is a pastoral, peaceful and beautiful place with old-country flavour, not much different than it was described in the novel Anne of Green Gables written by Lucy Maud Montgomery almost one century ago.
Although you would never guess this, Prince Edward Island is the most densely populated province of Canada. However, towns of PEI aren’t big at all and the romantic island is always good for a lazy vacation.
    Prince Edward Island in Figures
Prince Edward Island has a population of 135,294 people (Census 2001).
PEI is 224 km (140 mi) long and 6 to 64 km (4 to 40 mi) wide.
Prince Edward Island covers an area of 5,660 sq km (2,184 sq mi).
No place on the Island is more than 16 km (10 mi) from the sea.
The highest elevation of PEI is with 152 m above sea level (466 feet) located at Springton.

Prince Edward Island is history. Our past includes the sea in all ways. The first permanent inhabitants were the Mi'k Maq people, a community that called the Island Abegweit interpreted as cradled on the waves. Centuries after their settlement, the first recorded European visit was by the French explorer Jacques Cartier in 1534. In 1719 the first permanent settlement was established. Many descendants of the early French and Acadian communities reside here today. In 1758 the British captured the Island and deported most of the French-speaking population. Under British control, the Island began the settlement process in earnest. It was boosted by the arrival of United Empire Loyalists after the American War of Independance. The Island progressed through to the 1860's to where our capital hosted the Charlottetown Conference , which is recognized as the meeting that brought Canada together as a nation. Today, the birthplace of Canada may visited at Province House in Charlottetown. Prince Edward Island did not join Canada immediately, but entered Confederation in 1873. Through an Island native, the Island became very well-known world-wide. Ludy Maud Montgomery wrote the world-famous
