The Pre-Raphaelites and the New Romantic Tradition by Terri Windling "Persephone" by Gabriel Rossetti The Pre-Raphaelite movement began as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 19th-century England seven young artists protesting against the confining ideals of High Victorian art, as well as the strict, rote methods of painting they were required to learn at London's Royal Academy. They disparaged all Academic art as "slosh" and referred to the head of the Royal Academy, Sir Joshua Reynolds, as "Sir Sloshua." These young men longed to paint as they imagined the early Italian artists (pre-Raphael) had painted: with freedom and simplicity. (For a closer look at the history and stories of the Pre-Raphaelites, see the column on the Pre-Raphaelites in the Forum section of this Web site.) Of the seven original members of the PRB, three went on to lasting fame: John Millais, William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Of these, it is Rossetti who we most associate with Pre-Raphaelite art today. His paintings of sultry ladies with long white necks and masses of flowing hair have come to define the Pre-Raphaelite style: one rich in romanticism, symbolism, mythic imagery, and deep nostalgia for an ideal medieval world that never was. Rossetti, of Italian ancestry, was deeply influenced by the works of Dante, the great Florentine poet who wrote The Inferno and The Divine Comedy . The legend of Dante's life-long love for Beatrice, married to another man, lay at the core of Rossetti's romanticism, in his art and his life. Rossetti's paintings portray Beatrice and other idealized, mythologized women surrounded by allegorical symbols of Love love lost, love won, love broken and betrayed. "One face looks out from all his canvasses," the Victorian poet Christina Rossetti wrote in a poem about her famous brother. In Dante Gabriel Rossetti's youth that face was the enigmatic Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal, a working girl and model whom he would marry . . . and who would then die young, which haunted the man for the rest of his life. Later, a dark-haired "stunner" appears in his paintings, over and over again the great love of his later years, Jane Morris, the wife of another man.

Goethe's theory of colours and the PreRaphaelites STEVEN KOLSTEREN Goethe's Theory of Colours and the Pre-Raphaelites Goethe based his Farbenlehre (1810) on the polarity of black and white. Looking through a vagueness or prism at black or white, he saw two basic colours: blue and yellow. Blue can be intensified to purple, yellow to orange-red. Red and purple together give magenta- the strong side- and yellow and blue together give green -the weak side-. Thus, he constructed a colour circle. Moreover, he gave advice to artists to use either characteristic combinations, harmonic combinations or use complementary colours. In 19th century British art, painters were interested in colour theories. J. M. W. Turner, for example, used Goethe's colour theory which was translated into English in 1840 by C. L. Eastlake, President of the Royal Academy of Arts. However, no-one has ever researched its influence on the Pre-Raphaelite painters and their bright, detailed colours. details of paintings by D.G.Rossetti, W.Holman Hunt, Arthur Hughes and Thomas Seddon Goethe's Theory of Colours and the Pre-Raphaelites is a book-length, unpublished study of the colour theories in 19th century Victorian England and the colours of the Pre-Raphaelite painters in the years 1848-1860. William Morris (1834-1896) Page from The Glittering Plain Famous as the founder of the Arts and Crafts Movement . He was born in Walthamstow, then a village, and moved to a grand residence there called Water House at the age of 14 - this has since become the William Morris Gallery . He studied at Oxford with the intention of becoming a clergyman, but while there he met Edward Coley Burne-Jones , also studying for the church, and they both began to turn towards art. They were persuaded by Rossetti to give up the studies and become artists. Morris did a year in architectural practice of G. E. Street , and then turned to painting. However, he soon found that his metier was design. The cooperative attempt to decorate his new house (the Red House, built by Philip Webb ) at Bexleyheath, south east of London, lead to the setting up of the firm Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co. The partners were Morris, Burne-Jones, Rossetti Ford Madox Brown Philip Webb , Charles Faulkner, and Peter Paul Marshall, a surveyor. The firm was set up as a 'company of Fine Art Workmen', designing and producing (or at least supervising the production of) furniture, wallpaper, murals, tapestrywork, stained glass windows, metalwork, tapestries, and smaller works such as tiles and embroidery. It started in 8 Lion Square, London, where there was sufficient space for workshops, showrooms, and a kiln in the basement for tile production. The firm later became simply Morris and Co. when Morris - always blessed with a private income - bought out the other partners.
