Portugal stopped to watch our team participation in the World Cup… Because of the games being early, people missed the work to see our stars shinning, however, it didn’t happen
Portugal vs. U.S.A
Everyone was excited to see the game and, as me, most of the portugueses didn’t sleep.
The streets were “dressed” with red and green, the flag was everywhere and portugueses were wearing Portugal’s t-shirt, the scarf neck and the faces painted with Portugal’s flag.
The Nations Park, in Lisbon, was full with people (men, women, children, etc) of different races and from other countries but all of them were supporting Portugal. However this beautiful beginning finished in sadness. No one could believe in this result and made us think that our team wasn’t so good as we thought. Portugal vs. Poland

Lisbon in London
The Portuguese community in London has arranged themselves around the fierce loyalty to their country’s top clubs, but what happens when Portugal plays as a nation?
"I am a supporter, not a fanatic," stresses Luis Uceda Sampaio, aware that 'fanatic' is often used to describe someone with excessive or misguided enthusiasm. Luis is a fan, not a fanatic. Living in West London you might expect him to be a fan of Chelsea or Queen Park Rangers. But no, Luis supports Benfica, the famous Portuguese side from Lisbon.
"I was born in Lisbon and have followed Benfica since I was a boy. I moved to London years ago and will never change team," says Luis.
Club allegiances are strong in Portugal, as they are in most Western European countries. The rivalry between Benfica and Sporting Lisbon is fierce, and both have enjoyed periods of dominance. In recent years Porto and Boavista have also been successful.
It's around this club allegiance that the Portuguese diaspora community in London has organised itself. Luis, his friend Salvador Machado and Salvador's son Charley are settled into the warm and friendly surroundings of the Benfica Club. This club, like countless other Benfica clubs around the world, "provides the social hub to the local Portuguese community away from our homeland," says Salvador.

our tour July 2001 Evora Mertola Estromoz Marvao Fatima Alcobaca Batalha Obidos Sintra Lisbon Albufeira picture links open new windows - please close them after viewing T his journey by far surpassed our expectations. Portugal is a fascinating country with a rich cultural heritage, charming old cities, picturesque landscapes, dreamlike beaches with idyllic bays and not at least the country, where 1917 happened the wonder of Fatima , which made the city a world famous place of Christian pilgrimage. W e started our tour with a one week's round-trip by car, which gave us unforgettable impressions of life, the cultural heritage and the beauty of the country. Our itinerary lead us more than 1000 km through the country, from Faro at the southern coast up to the region around Lisbon and back to the Algarve, to Albufeira, where we spent another week. E specially remarkable and impressive were the unusual large fortresses on high hilltops, the mighty ramparts of which surround mediaeval cities, still inhabited as well as marvellous castles. Thus we often felt like taken back into the times of the Moorish conquerors and the expulsion of them by the Portuguese. O n the way we enjoyed seeing the varying landscapes - steppes, mountain chains and fertile plains with exotic subtropical vegetation. While Eucalyptus-, olive- and cork oak plantations, fruit trees and wine form the lovely picture of the countryside, palms and a lavish abundance of colourful flowers gives the white villages, the nobleman's country seats, the solaced quintas and the cities a charming flair.

According to historians from portugal, the Portuguese people were the ones who started the European expansion to the new world of Africa in the fiftteenth century. From all the countries that participated in the overseas expansion Portugal was the state that had colonies for a longer period. They had colonies for five hundred years, until 1975 when nationalist groups in the colonies rebelded against the fascist regime of Salazar which was defeated by the Portuguese armed forces in 25 April of 1974.Portugal had five colonies in Africa: Portugal has been a member state of the EU for one decade only.
