Conferences
Annually, the Canadian Population Society (CPS) meets as part of the , that is hosted by different University campuses in Canada each year. The conference is usually 3 days in duration in late May/early June, features 25-30 academic paper presentations, and an Annual General Meeting. Where possible, sessions are designed to be joint with other Societies at the Congress and who share research interests, e.g. Canadian Economics Association, Canadian Association on Geography, etc. Annually, an award is given to the best student paper . In 2002, the CPS met on the University of Toronto campus. Programs and abstracts for 1996-present are available online. New! Read about the May 1-3, 2003 Joint CPS/PAA Session , "Demography of North American Aboriginal Population". the Call for Papers/Abstract deadline is October 1, 2002.

Note: Timetable entries for papers can be obtained by clicking on the icon beside the paper's code. Demography is concerned with the empirical analysis of population structure and trends, and population studies interrelates these with social, economic, environmental, cultural, biomedical and other factors. An important element is the application to social, economic environment and other areas of policy formulation and monitoring. An appreciation of the techniques of demographic research and analysis is essential to the study of both methodology and substantive issues.
The Population Studies Programme co-ordinates the undergraduate programme in Population Studies and the graduate subject of Demography for the BSocSc(Hons) and MSocSc degrees.
Population Studies
Population Studies may be taken as a supporting subject for the BA or BSocSc degrees. This programme of study complements and supports other papers in the University which are concerned with population, by providing training in core concepts, methods and issues. Students taking Population Studies as a supporting subject must include POPS201 in their degree programme. Students interested in this programme should consult the Population Studies Programme staff. Further information may also be obtained from the Chairpersons of the particular departments which teach the papers.

Details of Study Areas: Geography and Demography Chapter summarised by Rimma Ignatyeva Introduction The ELSPAC study is being conducted in several European countries with quite different political, geographical and demographic histories. At the beginning of the project almost all participating countries (except Greece) had mainly state-owned public health services (including the maternity and child health care sectors). Although the study areas in each country were defined with the intention of having a representative geographic population of that particular country, there were some specific features of each of the study sites where the ELSPAC data were being collected. The studies described here were performed in the British Isles (Avon and the Isle of Man), in Greece (part of the city of Athens) and in three of the new independent states of the former socialist bloc in central and eastern Europe (the Czech Republic, Russian Federation and Ukraine). Since the late 1980s or early 1990s, these latter three countries together with the whole eastern region of Europe have been undergoing profound political, social and economic changes. The major political reforms stress democratisation and decentralisation, privatisation and market economy. Rapid economic and political transition have also brought major changes to the health care systems in the region. Russia The population is approximately 148 million. The average population density is 8.7 per square kilometre and fluctuates from 328 people in Moscow to 0.2 in Chukchi okrug. Approximately 82% of the population are ethnic Russian, although more than 100 minority nationalities also live in Russia. 74% of the people live in urban areas.

THE STATE OF RIO GRANDE DO SUL Geography and Demography With a territorial area of 282, 062 km2 (3.30% of the Brazilian territory) and occupying the southern extreme of Brazil, the state of Rio Grande do Sul has boundaries with the State of Santa Catarina to the N-NE, the Argentine Republic to the W-NW, the Republic of Uruguay to the S-SW and is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean on its eastern edge. It is located between the longitudes 57°36'14"W - 49°42'00W and the latitudes 33°45'37"S - 27°05'20"S.
According to the Demographic Census 2000-IGBE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) the population of the state is 10,187,798 inhabitants. There was an increase of 11.4% in the decade from 1991 to 2000 (1.02% per year in recent years). In this period the urban population increased from 76.6% to 81.6%, while the rural population also diminished in absolute terms: of the 2.14 million rural inhabitants recorded in the census of 1991, 1.87 million remained in 2000. This represents not only the migration of rural population to the urban centers, a recurrent phenomenon throughout Brazil in recent decades, but also the migration of rural entrepreneurs and workers to the new important agricultural frontiers of the Midwest and North of Brazil, where there is a notable presence of Gaucho pioneers.
Around 28% of the population of Rio Grande do Sul is located in municipalities that form the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre - the main center of energy consumption in the State. Also notable are the large industrial centers of Caxias and Pelotas, cities with populations of over 300,000 inhabitants.

It is permeated by numerous rivers and spotted by lakes of tectonic and karst origin, which further add the beauty to the area. In the northern part of the lowland area, there is the Shkodra lake. The Shiroka beach stretches along its shores. Along the Adriatic coastline, the Western Lowland area forms numerous bays with clear water and fine sand, which are very suitable sites for coastal tourism.

A statistical profile is presented for all Canadian communities (cities, towns, villages, Indian Reserves and Settlements, etc.) for metropolitan areas and for health regions. Information is provided on education, income and work, families and dwellings, births and deaths, general population information, and health information. A mapping feature is available for viewing the location of a community within Canada.
