Wetward Ho
contributed by Lu Hickey From 1860 to 1862, Pony Express riders carried mail n relays from St. Joseph, MO to Sacramento, CA. Riders were out of "St. Joe" had only a brief gallop to the wide Missouri River where ferry boats conveyed them over the river. From St. Joseph the Pony Express followed the Oregon-California trail across northeast Kansas territory then ran north to the Platte river in Nebraska and west to Sacramento, California. The Kansas section of the route had 11 stations. The original station in Marysville still stands. Relay stations were established 15-20 miles apart where riders would change horses. The Oregon Trail was known by many names, The Mormon Trail, the Platte Trail and the California Trail, as these were the most common trails used by the diverse settlers moving west to attempt to tame the west, the Indians, and the new frontier. The Oregon Trail was used by the Army, and stagecoaches and the Pony Express followed part of the trail. In 1830, William Sublette took the firs wagons along the route to the rocky Mountains. By the middle of the 1840s, traffic on the Oregon Trail was tremendous and the California gold rush increased its use even more in 1849 and 1850.

Pony Express Historic Resource Study
Introduction:
MYTH AND REALITY OF THE PONY EXPRESS INTRODUCTION
Perhaps no event in Western American history has captured the imagination and held the interest of people as the story of the Pony Express. Since this episode of transportation history blazed across our frontier past (in service only eighteen months), many participants, eyewitnesses, as well as Western writers, authors, and scholars have written about it with great admiration in popular books, and scholarly monographs and journal articles. Even motion pictures [ ] and television have adopted the heroic saga as their own, depicting the young men on horseback withstanding weather, enduring fatigue, and facing danger from attack by Indians, in order to carry the nation's mail as rapidly as possible across the nineteen hundred miles between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. Today, this saga is deeply ingrained in our American heritage, and has become a symbol of our western past. A majority of the works on the Pony Express have popularized its lore over the realities and hardships of the operation. From the start, literary writers depicted Express riders in gallant, adventurous terms. For instance, in August of 1860, one newspaper writer described the "journey of the Pony" this way: Using a good thesaurus, a little imagination, and a flair for the written word, many authors simply rewrote, reorganized, and re-romanticized manuscripts about the Pony Express, such as the above quotation. Over the years, they have added little insight into the history of the Pony Express. Other sources tell the story of the Pony Express fairly accurately, however they provide little or no documentation to support their statements.

How shall we be governed so as to retain our liberties? Can any government be free which is not administered by general stated laws? Who shall frame these laws? Who will give them force and energy?....When I consider these things, and the prejudices of people in favor of ancient customs and regulations, I feel anxious for the fate of our monarchy or democracy, or whatever is to take place."

American History
Eighth Grade
The Eighth Grade Course of Study begins with an intensive review of the major ideas, issues and events preceding the founding of the nation. The students will then concentrate on the critical events of our history from the framing of the Constitution to World War I. These units, as stated in our textbook, The American Nation include:
  • Focus on Geography
    Meeting of Different Worlds
The Thirteen English Colonies The American Revolution Creating A Republic The Constitution At Work The New Republic Begins The Age of Jefferson Industry and Growth Democracy in the Age of Jackson Westward Expansion The Worlds of North and South The Era of Reform A Dividing Nation The Civil War The Reconstruction Era An Era of Change in the West The Rise of Industry and Unions Immigration and the Growth of Cities Progressives and Reformers Becoming a World Power World War I Linking the Past to the Present
Post World War I: While most of the history of the 20th Century America is the province of the eleventh grade, we can examine the social transformation of the United States that has occurred during this time. This would include the major changes in the social and economic status of women, minorities and children. The role of the Constitution as a mechanism to guarantee the rights of individuals should be analyzed.
