Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Read his poem "The Charge of the Light Brigade"
Nationality: English
Career: Poet and playwright Tennyson was born in 1809 in Somersby, Lincolnshire. The fourth of 12 children, he was the son of a clergyman who maintained his office grudgingly after his younger brother had been named heir to their father's wealthy estate. According to biographers, Tennyson's father, a man of violent temper, responded to his virtual disinheritance by indulging in drugs and alcohol. Each of the Tennyson children later suffered through some period of drug addiction or mental and physical illness, prompting the family's grim speculation on the "black blood" of the Tennysons. Biographers surmise that the general melancholy expressed in much of Tennyson's verse is rooted in the unhappy environment at Somersby. Tennyson enrolled at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1827. There he met Arthur Hallam, a brilliant undergraduate who became Tennyson's closest friend and ardent admirer of his poetry. Hallam's enthusiasm was welcomed by Tennyson, whose personal circumstances had led to a growing despondency: his father died in 1831, leaving Tennyson's family in debt and forcing his early departure from school; one of Tennyson's brothers suffered a mental breakdown and required institutionalization; and Tennyson himself was morbidly fearful of falling victim to epilepsy or madness. Hallam's untimely death in 1833, which prompted the series of elegies later comprising

Explanation: To His Excellency, General Washington
Line 1 Celestial choir is the poet's muse, a device of neoclassicism. The muse is called on to inspire the poet's writing.
Back to Poem
Line 2 "Columbia" was a term Wheatley used for America, later used by other writers.
Back to Poem
Line 3 "Freedom's cause" is the central theme of the poem, the struggle of the colonists to be free from England, even if it meant going to war against the more powerful British.
Back to Poem
Line 4 In this context, "dreadful" means "inspiring awe or reverence," "in refulgent arms" means "in brilliant defense." In this sense, Columbia (America) is portrayed in righteous terms for standing up against England.
Back to Poem
Lines 5-6 The speaker of the poem points out that other countries are watching something unique occurring in the uprising. And as it turns out, the American Revolution directly inspired the French Revolution.

Lines 7-8 Heaven is affected by the struggle in a sorrowful way.

Essentially, this book is a history of Ted Hughes' life. It makes no great claims to interpret his ideas inside the covers. What I liked about this book was its attempt to make a balanced description of what happened with Sylvia Plath and the other significant people in his life. The author avoids the rancor and emotionalism that must certainly have engulfed Ted in the years subsequent to Sylvia's suicide. It's the first account of Ted I have read which suggests that although he had a weakness for beautiful women, he was very patient and kind with Sylvia and tried to help her even after their separation. He continued to support her growing fame after her death. In this book he comes over as a likeable, thoughtful man ' a gentle giant amidst circumstances fraught with extremity.

Henry VIII
King
Great Britain: England
Sometimes known as "Prince Hal," King Henry VIII of England was the second son of Henry VII and the second in the Tudor dynasty. His elder brother, Arthur, died before their father, so it was the hale and hearty Henry who, after marrying his brother's widow Catherine, took the throne upon his father's death. Henry VIII's political maneuverings resulted in a break with the Catholic Church and the launch of the English Reformation, all motivated by his pursuit of a male heir. He is perhaps best known for his six wives, two of whom he had executed. Henry also wrote poetry and composed music, and was considered an excellent sportsman until ill health slowed him down. Hildegard of Bingen
Monastic
Saint
Woman of Note Europe: Germany
Hildegard von Bingen, known as Sibyl of the Rhine for her musical compositions and poetry, was a visionary mystic and abbess of the Benedictine cloister of Disibodenberg. Her visions, which she'd experienced since a child, were confirmed by a committee of theologians and officially recorded in the work Scivias. Hildegard also wrote music, lives of saints, treatises on natural history and medicine, and correspondence containing prophecies and allegorical treatises. Though never formally canonized, she is listed as a saint in the Roman Martyrology for the miracles reported during her lifetime and at her tomb. The recent 900th anniversary of her birth generated renewed interest in her music, much of which has been recorded by groups such as The Anonymous 4, Gothic Voices and Sequentia.
