V. CAREER PLANNING
The College Career Development Center
The Career Development Staff is professionally trained to assist students in their career decision making, career planning and job search throughout college. Student questions and needs are diverse and so are the services. The staff strives to provide the best possible service regardless of career interests or college major. The Center's philosophy is to support students in their decisions. Staff will assist students as much as possible through career counseling, workshops and support services that have been designed to work to their advantage. The bottom line; however, is that the responsibility for making decisions, planning, securing employment, gaining admission to graduate school or otherwise planning for life after graduation rests with the student. Career Development services are available on a walk-in or appointment basis and staff are conducting workshops on a regular basis. Students are invited to visit the Career Library, use computers available for resumes and cover letters, schedule time for DISCOVER (a computer-based career guidance system), or register to receive job vacancy listings. Staff are also reaching out to potential employers and graduate school programs to increase opportunities for students. Students need to take the initiative to contact the Center. Career issues affect everyone and are an important consideration for most students; however, it is easy to procrastinate given the demands and diversity of college life.

Subba Rao did what he has been doing best with thousands of youth every year. He inspired them to learn the Gandhian principles of Non-Violence, Truth, Self-Reliance, and Dignity of Labor, and challenged them to use it every day, every way. On another day, three young activists associated with ASATA (Alliance of South Asians Taking Action) spoke to the youth about their work in fighting hate crimes in the post September 11 environment. A group of Gypsy/Indian dancers and singers taught the youth about energizing day to day life with music and graceful dance movements. An afternoon mentoring session They got to show off their talents on the last day to parents, volunteers and guests. It was amazing to see how involved the teams were in the planning and execution of each project. Then there were some astounding role models, mentoring the youth each afternoon and reinforcing the spirit of caring and sharing, and instilling a sense of pride in Indian culture.

    Preparing for Grad Study
    Understanding Graduate Education
Undertaking a graduate education is a serious commitment. There are important distinctions between the types of degrees available. The Undergraduate Experience American undergraduate education is typically a time for students to experiment in a wide range of disciplines and general education courses discover what holds the most interest for them. Students select a major, but are not expected to dedicate their entire educational experience to this subject alone as might be the case in other countries. The Master's Degree Master's degrees vary across the range of disciplines, but some generalizations can be made about them. A master's degree typically takes from 1.5-3 years, depending on discipline and requirements. Students seeking a master's degree are expected to attain a certain level of mastery (hence the name) of a specific subject, although not as complete as at the doctoral level. Students must learn a language or a quantitative method related to their field of study and produce a significant thesis or pass a demanding comprehensive exam at the end of their studies.

Mary Miller is President, Interactive Design and Development, Blacksburg, Virginia, USA. New technologies provide opportunities for nutrition educators to enhance communication efforts which can improve the health and well-being of people everywhere. Computer technologies are providing viable means of exchanging nutrition information among professionals and informing and influencing the public. STAND-ALONE APPLICATIONS Computer programs that run without telephone, television, satellite or other electronic transmissions are known as stand-alone applications, These programs have received the greatest use in nutrition education to date. Programs are available on floppy disks, CD-ROM (compact disk - read only memory) and laser disks with accompanying floppy disks and can be used at computer workstations or stand-alone kiosks. The major types of nutrition computer programs pertain to nutrient analysis, food service and recipe management, menu planning, clinical nutrition, drug-nutrient interactions, health risk assessment and lifestyle prescription, food and nutrition education and games. In addition to programs specific to their field, nutrition educators are also assisted by general production tools such as graphics packages, computer photo and clip art collections and presentation software.

Do Americans get along with their co-workers? A recent survey says that, by and large, they do. Conducted last month, the poll of 1,385 office workers reveals that lunch is the most popular social activity outside the workplace. Overall, 97.2 percent of the respondents said they have lunch with co-workers at least a few times a year. Nearly half, 49.3 percent, said they lunch with colleagues at least once a week. When asked how often they meet co-workers for happy hour, 47 percent said a few times per year. Just over 23 percent said they attend the after-work social function a few times per month, 24.2 percent said they never meet co-workers after work. The number who attended a few times a week was 5 percent.
