National Geography Standards
The National Geography Standards were established to form a framework that provides guidelines on what students should know about geography. The 18 standards listed below have been categorized into six essential elements.
The World in Spatial Terms
The geographically informed person knows and understands:
report information from a spatial perspective.
Indicators:
1. Learn how to make maps, globes, graphs, etc.
2. Describe characteristics, functions, and applications of maps, globes, and other images.
3. Identify advantages and disadvantages of maps and other images.
4. Identify locations of places, as well as physical and human features.
5. Use mental maps to answer geographic questions. 6. Analyze the spatial organization of people and places on Earth.
Places and Regions The geographically informed person knows and understands: Indicators: 1. Describe physical characteristics of a place. 2. Describe human characteristics of a place. 3. Compare characteristics of communities or regions.

by Roger M. Downs
(source from http://www.nationalgeographic.com/resources/ngo/education/standards.html “Geography for Life” is the new geography standards. Organizing the Subject
The subject matter is organized into two levels. At the first level, geography is divided into six essential elements. By essential we mean necessary; we must look at the world in this way. By element, we mean a building block for the whole. At the second level, each essential element contains a number of geography standards, each of which contains a set of related ideas and approaches to the subject matter of geography. There are 18 standards. Because we cannot discuss all of them here, let’s pick one essential element, the World in Spatial Terms, and look at one standard to get a sense of what the content of geography looks like when it is converted to standards language. The World in Spatial Terms is the beginning of geography; if we study the relationships between people, places, and environments, then we must do so by mapping information about them into a spatial context. And so the first standard, the first of three in this element, is “how to use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective.” Broad, yes, but deliberately so.

World Geography
Introduction
Students of World Geography learn about the spatial distribution of people, places, physical features, resources, and human activities. They will ask the questions asked by geographers as they study the world: What are the physical and human characteristics of places? Why are things located where they are? What is the significance of the location of things? What patterns are reflected in the groupings of things? The study of World Geography at the secondary level builds on the foundation laid in cultural geography studies in grades 4-7 as it offers students an opportunity to discern patterns of physical and cultural characteristics in a variety of world regions. Five fundamental themes and analytical questions introduced in the primary social studies program and developed in grades 4-7 provide the framework for World Geography. They are as follows:
  • LOCATION: What is the location of this place on the map? What is its location relative to other places?

We stock a variety of world maps in many sizes and prices. We particularly like physical maps-those which emphasize the natural landforms of the world. But we also stock even more political maps, which emphasize national boundaries.
Our stock includes rolled and folded maps. See our International Travel Map section for folded World maps. World Maps: Physical World Maps: Political Confused about all your choices? See our World Map Comparison Chart below World Maps-Physical Physical maps emphasize the natural landforms of the planet, rather than human territories (national boundaries). If a physical map is one you decide you want, your next task is to decide how big and which projection. The word "projection" refers to the particular means devised to plot or "project" the spherical earth's surface on to a flat map. This is detailed in each description.
These maps all come rolled and are shipped Priority only.

ALABAMA COURSE OF STUDY: GEOGRAPHY "This one-semester study of geography in the Seventh Grade emphasizes the knowledge and skills necessary to develop a geographic perspective. By the end of this course, students should understand the fundamental physical and human patterns on the Earth's surface as well as the processes that created these patterns. Representative areas of the world should be selected for detailed studies of the content standards. In this course students learn how to apply a geographic perspective to the past, present, and future. This Seventh Grade study of geography supports the study of world history in the Eighth and Ninth Grades as well as the study of U.S. history in the Tenth and Eleventh Grades. The six essential elements of geography are used to organize the content standards. Geographic skills and perspectives ( Geography for Life , 1994) are interwoven throughout the content standards." ( Alabama Course of Study Social Studies , Bulletin 1998, No 18, p. 72.) Geographic Elements The World in Spatial Terms The structuring of geographic information, the ordering of knowledge into real and mental maps, and the spatial analysis of that information.

The Power of Place: World Regional Geography
by Gil Latz One of the striking features of the discipline of geography is that little distinction is made between domestic and international matters . There is no subset of the field that can be labeled "international geography." In fact, such a categorization has a distinctly odd ring to the professional geographer. By embracing a field of study that since the age of the Greeks has strived to "write about the earth," the geographer accepts the challenge of understanding and explaining the myriad forces that give shape to the world's diverse physical and human environments. (See the related article "Going Global with Going the Distance" by Jacques Dubois in this issue.) The Power of Place: World Regional Geography , a new geography telecourse from the Annenberg/CPB Project embraces this challenge. The telecourse, which premieres on PBS in fall 1996, provides a creative and insightful examination of the geographic forces currently at work in shaping the complex features of the world's civilizations and environments.
