The Transvaal Technical Institute which became the "Transvaal University College" (T.U.C.) was established in Johannesburg in 1903. It was the first tertiary educational institution in the province of Transvaal, South Africa.
The "Pretoria Centre of the Transvaal University College" (T.U.C.) opened its doors on the 10th of February 1908 in Kya Rosa in Skinner Street for 32 students. Amongst the first four professors was Prof. Dr. D. F. du Toit Malherbe, professor for Physics, Chemistry, Geology and Mathematics.
In 1911 the T.U.C. moved into the "Old Arts Building" on the present campus and on the 10th of October 1930 the "T.U.C." was incorporated in the independent "Universiteit van Pretoria". Afrikaans became the official language of instruction on the 13th September 1932. The Department of Physics became an independent department in 1909.

Physics at California State University, Fresno
The Fundamental Science
Physics is the fundamental science. It combines observation and experiment with creative synthesis to express the laws of nature, often elegant in their simplicity and universality. Einstein said, "They [the laws of nature] should form the basis from which a picture of all processes of nature can be derived by thoughtful deduction - and these include also the processes of life." Specifically, physics includes the study of the fundamental particles, of nuclear, electromagnetic and gravitational fields and forces, of energy, of light and optics, of heat, of electronics and the structore of materials, of the interiors and exteriors of the earth and the stars.
Introduction to the CSUF Physics Department
The CSU, Fresno Physics Department has 11 full-time faculty members , all with doctorates. They are dedicated to teaching, and several are very active in research areas. Students are encouraged to participate in research as well.
Facilities
Our physics facilities in McLane Hall have just undergone a complete renovation. We have argon ion lasers, several optical tables, evaporative and ion beam sputtering chambers, a fullerene generator, a scanning probe microscope, a Raman spectrometer, x-ray and gamma-ray spectrometers, optical cryostats, mass spectrometers, closed cycle helium refrigerators, and good computational facilities. An excellent machine shop and electronics shop enhance our experimental capabilitie3s. The Downing Planetarium is scheduled to open in January 2000.

http://astro.physics.sc.edu/htmlpages/Astronomy/SelfPacedUnits/Unit57.html
UNIT 57
THE GENERAL THEORY OF RELATIVITY
NOTE: This Unit assumes you have studied Unit 56.
GOALS:
After mastery of this unit you should:
  • know some of the major predictions of the General Theory
  • know some of the evidence that supports the theory
  • understand how this theory relates to cosmological ideas
    REFERENCES
The essay on the General Theory of Relativity that is attached or available from Kinko's. The following text material: the last part of Chapter 19; portions of Chapters 25, 26 and 27
    MASTERY
Will be evaluated by a 15 question, multiple-choice evaluation (13 correct responses for mastery) on the following:
    OBJECTIVES:
You should be able to recognize
  • the equivalence or difference in observations made by an observed in a small enclosed box (elevator) which is
  • at rest on the Earth
  • in a rocketship undergoing constant acceleration
  • in space far from other objects
  • freely-falling towards the Earth
  • the following about tidal effects
  • that gravity disappears if you freely-fall, only the tidal effects remain.
  • that the tides are the true effects of gravity
  • a description of the principle of general covariance.

FAQs General Doctoral Examination During the first two and a half years of graduate study students must demonstrate a mature grasp of the whole field of physics and detailed knowledge of their chosen area of physics. Students should discuss their plans for preparing for the examination with their research supervisor and academic advisor. The purpose of the general examination is to assure the Department that its graduates have a broad background in physics and a firm understanding of a particular branch of physics. The format is based on the premise that it is valuable for each student to review his or her general knowledge of physics in a systematic fashion and to measure it against a set of "community" standards. The examination is given in the fall and spring terms and consists of two written parts and one oral part. All portions of the general examination must be taken no later than the second term of the third year. Structure and Scheduling of the Examination The general examination consists of three parts. Part I and Part II are five-hour, written examinations. Part III is an oral exam and is approximately two hours long.
