HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF PROJECT GUTENBERG
When you get something for free, you get what you pay for!!!
That means if you don't use what you get for free, it won't do you any good. But sometimes it is nice to have a library your friends and family can use, even if they don't always use it.
The Beginning
Project Gutenberg began in 1971 when Michael Hart was given an operator's account with $100,000,000 of computer time in it by the operators of the Xerox Sigma V mainframe at the Materials Research Lab at the University of Illinois. This was totally serendipitous, as it turned out that two of a four operator crew happened to be the best friend of Michael's and the best friend of his brother. Michael just happened "to be at the right place at the right time" at the time there was more computer time than people knew what to do with, and those operators were encouraged to do whatever they wanted with that fortune in "spare time" in the hopes they would learn more for their job proficiency. At any rate, Michael decided there was nothing he could do, in the way of "normal computing," that would repay the huge value of the computer time he had been given. . .so he had to create $100,000,000 worth of value in some other manner. An hour and 47 minutes later, he announced that the greatest value created by computers would not be computing, but would be the storage, retrieval, and searching of what was stored in our libraries.

Chapter 1
THE PHILOSOPHY OF HISTORY IN GENERAL
We must first consider the philosophy of history from the point of view of the theory of knowledge. For many years the very notion of the philosophy of history was held in bad repute, because of Hegel, who was its putative father. (Before Hegel, however, there was Vico; and before Vico, St. Augustine . . .) Hegel regarded himself as a kind of philosopher-God recreating not only human history but the whole universe. But as happens more often than not, error was the usher of truth in the human mind. Despite the errors of Hegel, and even, in a way, because of them because of the way in which he was led to emphasize too strongly the aspect he had discovered in things it is through Hegel that the philosophy of history was finally recognized as a philosophical discipline. And we are now called to a constructive task. The crucial problem to be tackled is: what can be a genuine philosophy of history?
Is any Philosophy of History possible?
1. We have a first great example of such a philosophy in St. Augustine's

http://www.comelearnwithus.com/general.html
History and Philosophy of LTES Learning Together Educational Services (LTES) began in 1992 as an owner-operated tutoring service and has grown steadily, adding new services every year. As of Fall 2002, LTES has assisted over 800 clients, from elementary school through college.
Introduction Testing Should it become evident that educational evaluation is necessary, LTES will make such a recommendation to the parents or guardians. If our initial evaluation reveals a need for additional testing, such as to specifically diagnose a suspected learning difference, LTES makes such a recommendation to the parents. Location We believe that students work best in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. For children, this usually means their own home. The same holds true for adult clients, though we can also arrange sessions at the local library, the client's work site, The Howard Community College Library, etc. For children, we are also prepared to travel to the school if there is time available during the child's day for supplemental services, with the permission of the school. We also provide space at the LTES Office in the Long Reach Village Center in Columbia, MD. Support We believe that the essence of successful tutoring is the relationship between the tutor and the client. We know that sometimes clients come to the tutoring experience feeling unsure of their self-worth, abilities or potential. Part of our task is to convey to the client our belief that people possess different strengths and talents, and that a challenge in one academic area need not be reflective of overall capabilities.
