The Philippines The history of the Philippines, many argue, did not begin with the coming of the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in . Rather, it began in the 13th century, when 10 datus from Borneo, each with a hundred of his kinsmen, landed in what is now known as Panay Island in the Visayas. Yet, it was Magellan, and the succeeding expeditions from Spain, who put the Philippine archipelago on the map of the world. The intrepid Magellan was dubbed the "discoverer" of the Philippines after he landed upon the island of Homonhon, near Samar, on March 17, 1521, he then claimed these islands in the name of King Philip II of Spain and named them Felipinas, the Philippines. He was later killed in Mactan Island of Cebu in a clash with native warriors led by a chieftain named Lapu-lapu.

T he pages of a book are called leaves and small sheets with writing are called leaflets because more than a millennium ago, documents were written on leaves. In southern India and Southeast Asia, they were written on palm leaves. A document was called pattra, which is Sanskrit for leaf. Several leaves were strung and bound together to form a book. And so, this web page is a leaf, a pattra, a dahon. It is my opening page to our Philippine past,
H ello, my name is Hector Santos, I am a former aerospace computer systems engineer (no, I didn't work on weapons of mass destruction) who, like many others, was forced to change his lifestyle in 1992 when the cold war ended. Since then, I have survived by accepting occasional computer-related work assignments. More importantly, I have found the freedom to do things for which I never had time before. That has allowed me to spend a few years doing independent research on ancient Filipino writing systems and the way Tagalog was spoken before the advent of the Spaniards. My studies have revealed to me things I never knew and corrected some wrong impressions that I had. I would like to share with you some of what I have learned about ancient Philippines the way she was before the West found her.

    Sexual relationships in the Philippines

If you are traveling to the Philippines, you may be interested in sexual relationships with locals, and no, I do not mean the services of prostitutes or other commercial providers. While you can meet Filipinas or Filipinos interested in sex accidentally, the chances of success are not particularly high if you are there only for a limited period of time. On the other hand, Filipinas and Filipinos often are sexually attracted to foreign people. For young Filipinas, it is chic to have a Western boyfriend. So, there must be a trick to overcome the time-consuming "accidental", and to link more effectively the sexual interests of foreign visitors with those of locals. Try the Internet. Or, more to the point: try www.AdultfriendsFinder.com

They had already a system of writing but most of the materials used were perishable like leaves and bamboo barks. They spoke a language similar to that of the nearby provinces. The name Bohol is thought to be derived from the name of the barrio of Bo-ol, a brangay found in Tagbilaran City which was among the first places toured by the Magellan expedition. History has it that one of the Spanish ships of Magellan (the Concepcion) was burned in this province after Magellan was killed by Lapu-lapu in Mactan. In 1565, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi anchored in Jagna, one of the eastern municipalities of Bohol. He made a blood compact with Chiefs Sikatuna and Sigala in a small village near the present capital of the province, Tagbilaran City, signifying they were blood brothers.
The province became a Jesuit mission in 1595. At this time, Bohol was a part of the province of Cebu and was called a residencia.

The land, its name and occupancy, its location and wealth, the people , their idiosyncracies and attributes, their tradition and culture, their faith and beliefs, their occupation and pursuits, their tribulations and ordeals, nay, their settlements and systems of government, are history's subject matter and reasons for being. These, too are the main facies of this brief history of the municipality of Lasam, a work which is circumscribe by its being only a part of a profile.
THE LAND Barrio Macatabang was a place along the bank of the Cagayan River called so inhabited by Ybanag, Ilocano immigrant Filipino Chinese, and Malaweg. Macatabang was a part of Gattaran, but as the population increased, the people of the western part of Gattaran made a resolution that it be made a separate town. Congressman Paulino Alonso of the 2nd District of Cagayan introduced a bill in congress creating the municipality of Santo Tomas. Representative Cabarroguis of Nueva Vizcaya vigorously objected the suggested name on the first reading of the bill. Finally, Lasam was agreed upon in honor of the late Governor Honorio Lasam, the sixth governor of Cagayan (1915-1918) On June 13, 1950, the late President Elpidio C. Quirino signed R.A. 507 which made possible the creation of the municipality of Lasam.

HISTORY Ushering a new era of adult baseball in the Philippine setting... It all started one cool Sunday morning in December, 2000. A group of friends got together to play some baseball over at the Colegio San Agustin Field in Makati. They had been playing baseball for a significant portion of their lives yet always knew something was lacking. There was no organized baseball that catered to adult recreation. Gone were their playing days during school when taking to the field thrice a week was the norm. Although a local tournament or two during the year was organized by the Philippine Amateur Baseball Association (PABA), if you really wanted to play ball, there just weren't any options beyond playing with your alma mater's squads or the occasional gathering of friends. And that meant you either had to play during weekdays if you had the time or be persistent enough to get a group together. Quite a stark contrast to the golden ages just more than half a century ago when baseball was the country's preeminent sport. In fact, as late as the early 1970's there was quite a following for the game as the historic Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium attracted crowds to capacity. But all that was about to change. Drawn by a common passion and desire to play baseball, that following year these same friends would be seen playing baseball on many given Sundays. Each playing day brought in new and old faces alike, many of whom have been out of baseball for sometime if only because there was a lack of opportunity to play the game. It was not uncommon for one soul having not touched a baseball for a few years. Yet not more than a month went by when there was no baseball to be played. Their melting pot now included the lush Alabang Country Club Field in Muntinlupa with its 300+ foot fences. Yes this was only the beginning of a new era.

    HISTORY
Our Blessed Lady of the Visitacion of Piat
The image of Our Lady of Piat, known also as our Lady of Visitation of Piat (her feast is celebrated July 2), was originally called Our Lady of the Rosary, perhaps, because it was supposedly brought from Macao to the Philippines in 1604, by the devotees of the Rosary, the Dominican friars.
Due to numerous favors obtained through the intercession of our Lady of Piat, she has endeared herself not only to the people of the whole Northern Luzon. She has become the veritable refuge in all necessities of both body and soul. Some of the wonderful favors which our Lady of Piat has obtained for her children are the following:
    • In the year 1624, a terrible drought came upon the Itawes region. The people feared certain famine for they had planted their fields three times, and three times the plants had dried up for lack of rain. The people then turned to their priest who advised them to call upon Mary and to make their peace with God by confession and Communion. The people then started a Novena in honor of Our Lady of Piat and approached the Sacraments. After they had gone to confession during the Novena, a torrential rain suddenly poured upon the region making it possible for the people to plant their fields again. In 1738, a certain army officer, Capt. Jose Ramos fell ill in Lal-lo. Every remedy which the physicians had prescribed failed to do him any good. Having given up hope in human help, he turned to our Blessed Lady of Piat. The patient made a difficult trip by boat to the sanctuary of our Lady in Plat. Upon arrival at the place, his condition grew worse and he was given the last Sacrament. Without losing hope in our Lady, however, he continued to pray for recovery. After a couple of days, the sick man was not only out of danger, but even out of bed and was soon on his way to his hometown, Lal-lo.

    HISTORY
    The Lady with the Handkerchief
    by Dr. Nerina Israel Padilla
Testimonies have been made by old and young alike about the strange lady with the handkerchief visiting them in their home, and when they would see the Image of Our Lady at the Shrine they would exclaim: "I can't believe it, but she's the Lady who visited me when I was sick..."
"The woman who wiped my tears away when I was in great sorrow and I was comforted..."
"The Lady whom I saw in my dreams wiping my deep wounds and when I woke up, my wounds were dry and finally got well soon after..." One such story was told by the late Congressman Benjamin Ligot to Archbishop Teodulfo Domingo who in turn told it to Archbishop Talamayan who passed it on to this writer not so very long ago. The story was about the time the congressman was on his way to visit our Lady of Piat. With him was his young nephew. On the way, he was stopped by a woman who asked him for a ride. Without looking at her face but finding it strange for a woman to be walking along the deserted road so very early in the morning, he told her to hop in. At the bend of the road she thanked him and got off. Inside the church, Congressman Ligot was disturbed in his prayer when his nephew tugged at his sleeve, "Uncle," the boy whispered in an astounded voice, "look at the Lady on the altar! She was the one who rode with us!"
