    http://www.progressiveengineer.com/PEWeb 09 JulAug 00-2/Laughlin.htm
Tim Laughlin Passion for Petroleum I f you cut Tim Laughlin open, you might find oil running through his veins. Born in Arkansas, he moved to the prairies of Tulsa, Oklahoma at age six, where his dad worked in the oil business. Young Tim followed suit, plying the oilfields in summer during high school and college. "I was always fascinated by oil and how they get it out of the ground and refine it," he explains. It's only natural that Laughlin would go on to become a petroleum engineer. He ended up as technical Director for the North Carolina Petroleum Marketers Association (NCPMA) in Raleigh, North Carolina, a high-profile job that has the 40-year-old dealing with a host of technical challenges. After getting a B.S. in petroleum engineering technology from Oklahoma State University, Laughlin started his career at Natkin and Company in Tulsa as a project manager. This involved running sensors on a line into existing wells to determine oil reserves. He intended to stay in the oilfields, but he got laid off at Natkin and found oil jobs hard to find in the mid-1980s. A headhunter landed him a job in Raleigh at Colonial Mechanical Corporation as a project engineer. He later moved on to Atlantic Coast Mechanical in Raleigh as a project manager. His new specialty had him managing mechanical construction projects as large as 12.7 million dollars in volume a notable example of his work, the 31-story First Union Capitol Center, dots the Raleigh skyline.
